Broad keyword usage vs appropriate keyword usage

May I ask what is the difference between "broad keyword usage" and "appropriate keyword usage" that is included on the on-page reports? thank you!

As with most of our Crawl Diagnostics recommendations, using the keyword around 4 times is like the Pirate's Code: It's more of a guideline than a rule. That's, in part, why we chose to call it "appropriate" keyword usage rather than "correct." In general my rule of thumb is "use the keyword when it makes sense to use it, without so much that it sounds crazy" which in a standard-size web document of 300 words or more is going to be around 4 times. Including synonyms and other semantically related terms is also good to do, and should be pretty easy if you've chosen a good topic for your keyword. I hope that helps!

Does the 4 keyword usage still apply considering the Google Penguin update? I've read that you can now actually get penalised for doing so and that's it's better to include niche keywords (synonyms) that all relate to the subject matter rather than repetitive keywords/phrases.

Hello! Sorry about the confusion here.
Essentially, the "broad" factor tells you if you've used the keyword in the document text at least once and the "appropriate" factor tells you how many times out of four that you've used the keyword (we recommend using it at least four times in the document text).
As you can tell, these are a bit redundant at the moment, but this is so that they can be broken out by importance. Using the keyword at least once in the document text is a critical factor. Using it four times isn't quite critical, but its still pretty important.
As far as the difference between "exact keyword usage in document" and "broad keyword usage in document", this refers to broad and exact in a way similar to how adwords thinks of a broad match and exact match for keywords.
So if your keyword was "tennis shoes", we'd say you satisfied the broad match requirement by using the word "shoes" and "tennis" in the document text within five words of each other. You would only satisfy the exact match requirement by using the words "tennis shoes" together in the document text.

Yes, it seems that "broad" refers to a generic usage of the keywords throughout the page (document elements & body text).
And for "appropriate" and "exact", here is what I was able to figure out so far, not sure if it is true yet
The "appropriate" refers to keyword usage (not in exact fashion as the keyword phrase) within the document elements such as H1, page title, etc
And "exact keywords" refers to exact keyword usage within the body text.

As it is used within the on-page report card, it is a bit confusing. I looked at the use of Broad for Page Title, Document, and then the various uses of Appropriate. Interestingly, every time appropriate is used, there is a number associated with it. So appropriate/document - use it at least 4 times, H1 - 2 or less, title tag length - 66 char. Only for Characters in URL did appropriate not have a number.
For Broad, it appears the word is being used globally(the whole page) to point to a specific place: Broad usage - Document, broad usage - title tag. Appropriate seems to define a number range as it is used here. (I do not think it is an appropriate use of the word.)

Is Bing also ignoring meta Keywords tags?
Hi, I originally asked about pros (or lack of them) when it comes to using meta keywords tags here https://moz.com/community/q/importance-or-lack-of-meta-keywords-tags-and-tags-in-drupal. It was most likely related to Google, I guess. Is that the same if it comes to Bing as few sources are not sure how this SERP consider using meta keywords tags and people only speculating. Keyword Cannibalization vs. Optimizing Site
I am in the process of optimizing our website and I am having a hard time reconciling two best practices I have found on Moz. 1. You should avoid having multiple pages focus on the same keyword because you will lose some control of which result will show. 2. You should identify your core keywords and weave these keywords multiple times (naturally) throughout your site. I have spent months identifying our top 7 keywords and am working through the site now. The first piece of advice keeps giving me pause. Can anyone weigh in with other considerations or advice on how I can reconcile these two strategies. Thank you

Keyword in home II
Hi there! As someone told me in this forum it's important regarding SEO that the home page has the keyword in the url. When I type in www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com the home page is shown but it doesn't have the keyword por that page (cause obiously I didn't make any change at all) . I mean it should be something like www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com/KEYWORD right? The problem comes when I try to edit the url in the page section of wordpress. I'm not allowed to do that. Otherwise I CAN edit the rest of the pages of the website (not the home or considered as home). Does anybody have an answer for this issue? Thanks

Keywords on title
hi, some pages of my website showing keywords attached in google as part of page title, but the title doesn't have that keyword in it. Site Architecture: How do I best Optimize for Similar Keywords?
Hello Moz Community! I'm really struggling trying to decide on an improved site architecture. I run an online proofreading & editing website. This leaves us targeting many different niche keywords. For example: blog editing/proofreading, essay editing/proofreading, book editing/proofreading, resume... you get the point. I feel like editing & proofreading are similar enough to target on the same page(s). However, the issue is that I'm also having to deal with what I'm calling derivative keywords. For example, when I try to optimize for 'essay editing/proofreading', I also have to think about: paper editing, paper editor, paper correction, edit my paper, etc. I would have no problem optimizing the page for 'essay editing' in the title, H1, etc. and then targeting these words as secondary keywords within the body text, etc., however, I keep thinking 'a large slice of a small pie is better than a small slice of a big one.' You see, the keyword 'essay correction' has only about one-third the monthly searches as 'essay editing', but it is 50% less competitive. The same is loosely true for the rest of the 'derivative' keywords. I'd have no problem building specific pages for these derivative keyword groups, however, I'm very concerned how this would effect my site from a user experience perspective. I don't want to have a master "services" page with links to book editing, resume editing, essay editing, etc. and then also show paper editing, essay correction, etc. To me, this would be confusing... "What's the difference between essay editing and paper editing?". Any guidance is much appreciated. This has got my head spinning! Thanks!

SEO Titles and Keyword Density
Hey guys, I'm doing some on page SEO for a few clients and I've always wondered about this question. How many keywords / phrases can you SEO for?
Might sound like a bit of a daft question to you pro's but here it goes... I am been doing in house SEO for a company for a short while and since I have been managing it things have moved quickly in the right direction but I find myself limiting our SEO efforts to three key terms. Is this usual? The reason I am doing this is because I find that on page SEO is only really possible with those amount of terms (with regards to title, description, key word density, seo copy, on page links etc). I guess that what I trying to stay is: If I push on page opitimastion to more key terms will it be detrimantal to our current efforts? and Is SEO possible for additional key phrases which are not on page optimised?

Google VS Yahoo VS Bing & Onpage Optimization in 2011
I was just wondering if someone could point out to me any known differences between these three search engines. I feel like i have been spending a lot of time optimizing for google, but don't have much of an idea of how to optimize for yahoo or bing. Do you have any up-to date article links or tips/advice?
