Which new domain extensions matter
-
Hello,
Which new domain extensions matter to preserve future rankings? For example,
.shop, .inc, .blog, .web,
etc.
-
I won't be doing it. The Search Engines have changed since the early 2000s. Do you have a .us or .info to protect your brand? To match my domain authority and brand awareness from Google, they would have to tons and tons of work. "Protecting your brand" implies to me that someone will be pretending to be you and sell stuff that you offer. They'd have to outrank me for my keywords and brand awareness. I don't see that happening. EMDs could still be worth it but people naturally search for things vs typing in the exact domain name with correct extension. (I know Google had an EMD update but that effect mostly thin content EMD) If you are truly a "brand" with recognition, people know what outlets you have. If someone is pretending to be BobGW.blog, I find it hard to believe they would be overtaking your efforts. I just don't see it working out like it did early on in the web. Brands matter now and microsites (though they still work) are going by the wayside.
-
So you guys wouldn't recommend investing in them to protect your brand when you already own the .com, .net, and .org?
-
I agree. .com will always be king and I don't see any overtaking it. I personally think TLD have a very small factor in rankings between one TLD or another.
-
Is there a none of the above option? .com is still king and will always be. Until a major brand uses one of them as their MAIN url, it won't happen. If Overstock.com couldn't make O.co stick, then I don't see ANY of these working very well. I think a Brand may use them for a specific purpose but it won't be anything significant. If I had to guess I think .shop would work. I could see nfl.shop or something like that catching on.
-
If I were a company's CEO .inc would matter to me. If I had an ecommerce site, I'd go with .shop. If I were a blogger (which I am) I'll probably register a .blog for me. Well I think the .web will be something people would consider having for themselves if there are no .com's available.
I'm looking forward to .inc and .web.

Grabbed up some branded domains now what
With the recent release of gtlds I was waiting to pick up a .clothing for a client. For some strange reason something came over me and I ended up buying 10 domains of brandname.clothing domains of well know brands. I'm no cybersquatter but just an aspiring SEO and sell these brand's clothing products online. As I learn more about the legal issues I'm wondering what to do .Do I cancel domains with godaddy? Will I be refunded? Do I contact rightful owner and offer them the domain at cost? Can I create a fan site of the products and sell advertising as I seen on many occasions? So confused what to do?

Same Content or New Content?
Hi Everyone, Hope everyone is doing good. Well, thanks to the input of many people (experts) on this site I have almost arrived at where I want to be, even better than that....I am almost there with confidence because of all the input received from this site. So what have I done? I have redesigned a static website to WordPress, I decided t keep the old link structure which is suffixed .html, and to use redirects if needed. I also swithed hosting service providers to noe that carries htaccess. My last question, well probably not, is do I use the same content from the same pages on the old website to the new, or do i create new content, It is a local service business, new content would not be a problem, however, our current content seems to be ranking well with the old site though. In summary, should I change the content of the new site so "Duplicate Content" does not arise? Should I leave transdfer the content to the new site to maintain on page SEO that has been ranking me good thus far? As Always, any and all input is really appreciated! -jimmy

Not schema, but a new kind of search result?
I came across this search result in Google and I've been racking my brain out in trying to figure out how they did it. Do a search for Novus CD4 and you'll see a search result where they list additional products from the landing page. I used Google's Rich Snippet tool to analyse the page and find no microdata at play. Any ideas how this was achieved? Have you guys come across anything like this? I was thinking of integrating this with schema to display rating stars and prices on an ecommerce site S4aL5.png

Hyphenated domains – good or bad?
I have a client who will be changing their domain name from www.brand.co.uk to www.brandglobal.com. There are concerns however that this might affect the searches for brand terms and variants. Hence, there is a suggestion for going for www.brand-global.com. I’m aware that search engines are smart enough to discern the brand name in most cases, but I’m wary if it would impact highly on the brand search terms and would it be a better option to go for www.brand-global.com instead of www.brandglobal.com? Any advice (or reference to discussions around this) would be much appreciated. Thanks

What does the New Frontier of Search Look Like? (Mobile and Tablet)
I'd like to start a discussion thread on the direction of search as it applies to mobile and tablet. Jeff Haden, one of our Inc.com contributors, wrote an article headline stating that SIRI would be the end of SEO. However, what the article really talks about is the direction mobile search is likely to take: 1. Search results will be bypassed 2. Even more emphasis on local 3. PPC will be irrelevant 4. Emphasis on social media I think these insights are fairly intuitive and it will be really interesting to see how the medium for mobile and tablet develops. It will be interesting to see what technologies will shape the means by which users find information and not just the search intent of the user. Please add any insights you may have or good reads you'd like to share here.
