WordPress image urls - need a WP maven
-
We were having a conversation re urls that are indexed for images that are stored in various media plugins in WP.
My question for anyone who is an uberWP person is: What is your opinion re best media storage plugins and how these URLs affect pages on a site for ranking, etc.
I realize this is broad, but it is driven out of my concern that I cannot touch everything. When I see a url like this: http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-content/themes/drumbeat2/img/DB-LOGO-White.png
I know there is no way with all the sites and clients we handle that I can get it perfect but this just bugs me for some reason. Should I just chill since it (seemingly) affects so little....?

Hey Robert
What do you mean you "can't touch everything"? Do you mean edit the image title, alt text etc?
Looks like you basically have four places images are ending up at the moment;
- http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-content/Cimy_User_Extra_Fields/ look like user avatars - http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-content/Cimy_User_Extra_Fields/aaron/avatar/Aaron-Cohrs-small.jpg
- http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-content/themes/drumbeat2/ looks like as Lynn was saying theme images such as - http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-content/themes/drumbeat2/blog/img/seo-blog.png
- http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-content/uploads/ which is the default image upload location for WordPress, such as - http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Adobe-001.jpg
- http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-includes/images/smilies/ - for "smilies" like http://www.drumbeatmarketing.net/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif and there's only two of them
As Lynn said there's not much of a ranking issue here. If this was a gigantic site, I might suggest some sort of crawl optimization.
Also, I generally avoid plugins like the plague unless they offer a real super value add - and in the case of media management the built in WordPress media management is pretty solid for most sites. But it does look like this is the theme determining the location of some of these, not plugins (except for maybe those avatars).

Hi Robert,
There are a couple of things to think about. You mention media plugins, but the url you mention just looks like a theme image path. So if we start from theme images, I have got to love the roots wordpress starter theme. It has a series of htaccess rules that basically show all your template images sitting in /media and all your uploaded images sitting in /assets. It does the same thing for css and js files etc, so does a pretty good job of hiding the fact you are using wordpress (at least in terms of url paths). It can be a bit tricky to get used to, but once set up it is pretty good. I don't really think it makes a great difference in ranking for much, but I like the clean urls!

Wordpress #comment links?
We just started our trial account and have the results from our first Moz Pro Site Crawl. It's showing that we have a large portion of our pages have 'Too Many Links' and I'm trying to determine exactly what this means and how to fix it. The article referenced is from 2011 and doesn't fully address what I'm looking for. Here are a few questions: 1. Can we lower the 'link count' by adding a 'no follow' or does too many links, count links regardless? The question being, is the only way to solve this by removing links or are their no follow or no index options that will prevent us from having this issue moving forward? 2. Comment Links: Our site is in Wordpress and I just recognized that each of the comment links are followed: https://screencast.com/t/b0CIKVafWw. These aren't links from our users, rather these are links within Wordpress and are structured like this: https://mysite.com/blog-post/#comment-6970. From my screenshot you can see they are highlighted as 'followed links'. Is there a setting within Wordpress to turn this off or is there another option I should consider? Should we just make these no index, no follow links? Will that solve the 'Too many links' problem? I searched through the Q&A's and couldn't find an answer directly to my question. Most were around people leaving links in the comments section, which isn't what I'm looking for. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Will changing a URL negatively affect ranking?
Hello Mozzers, We would like to change the URL for a page on our website which ranks well for some our keyphrases/words. We are hoping the change of URL, through the addition of an additional keyword would help boost the rank of that URL further. At the moment out page gets 2 x A and 2 x B 1xF on the MOZ page rank tool using 5 keyphrase/word variations . One phrase ranks 4, one ranks 3 and the other 3 are 'not in the top 50' Our plan was to change the URL, using SHF404, and use 'Fetch' in the Google search console to re-submit the page to Google. Appreciate you can't give any guarantees how Google will behave, just wondered what your thoughts were on the wisdom of changing the URL in the first place? Thanks Ian

Should I use an acronym in my URL?
I know that Google understands various acronyms. Example: If I search for CRM System, it knows i'm searching for a customer relationship management system. However, will it recognize less known acronyms? I have a page geared specifically for SAP data archiving for human capital management systems. For those in the industry, they simply call it HCM. Here is how I view my options: Option #1: www.mywebsite.com/sap-data-archiving/human-capital-management Option #2: www.mywebsite.com/sap-data-archiving/hcm Option #3: www.mywebsite.com/sap-data-archiving/hcm-human-capital-management With option #3, i'm capturing the acronym AND the full phrase. This doesn't make my URL overly long either. Of course, in my content i'll reference both. What does everyone else think about the URL? -Alex

Image naming best practices?
While I have found many good sources of information for naming images for SEO purposes, I'm having trouble finding an up-to-date, exhaustive and authoritative source for image names, alt tags, etc. For instance... Max characters for image name? Max hyphens? How descriptive should you be? "ice-cream-flavors-icon_._jpg" or "ice-cream-flavors.jpg" or simply "ice-cream.jpg" How similar should the image name, alt text and page title be? At what point are you overusing a keyword? Rules to follow? So much more, but you get the idea! Anyone have a good reference or an answer to all things related to images and SEO? Thanks!

I would like to get advice about the site http://www.wb-3d.com regarding what we should do to get it highly on Google. This seems to be a tough one as there is not enough content on the site. I would immensly appeciate any suggestion to improve the rankings. Specifically, what we should tweet and update on facebook. Thanks
