Wordpress + Google Analytics = Pulling My Hair Out
-
Hey Mozzers,
Quick question for you-
I have analytics set-up for a personal site I run and I know, verifiably it's receiving traffic, however, whenever I access my Google Analytics dashboard, it says I've had zero visits.
Interestingly, today I had a colleague check the site from a foreign country and I could see the page views (within 15 minutes), however, I could not get any information about the site viewer.
I have verified that the Analytics profile is 'receiving data' (which it is) and my Google Webmaster Tools is not reporting any issues?
Finally, I went ahead and updated my profile so that it is pulling from 'www.mydomain.com' instead of 'mydomain.com', I don't know if that'll make any difference, but likewise, I didn't want to go and create the 'little kid in the elevator' analogy, where I'm just pressing a bunch of buttons just because they're there.
So the only changes I've made thus far were deactivating Yoast's SEO plug-in and manually placing the GA code in the header and updating the 'Website's URL' in the profile settings tab of GA from 'mydomain.com' to 'www.mydomain.com'.
With that, I am stumped and praying another one of the esteemed Mozzers out there may be able to help me resolve this. Any thoughts?

You'll definitely want to have the non-www version 301 redirecting to the www version, otherwise you're inviting ranking issues with the search engines.
Done correctly, you shouldn't encounter any 404s as a result, and there's nothing needed to do as far as "re-writes to update all the site pages URLs". That's precisely what the 301 redirect is designed to handle.
That said, if you have created links on your own website that point to the non-www version (in navigation or in post content for example) it would be a good idea to change them to what's called the Fully Qualified Domain Name or FQN. 301 redirects are suspected not to pass absolutely all their link juice through, so it's best to link directly to what you've decided will be the FQN for your site - i.e. the www.yoursite.com version.
Does the traffic seem to be flowing into Analytics now as expected?

Paul,
The non-www version was not 301 redirected, however, when I updated the 'default URL' in the property settings from 'mydomain.com' to 'www.mydomain.com' I started seeing traffic stats again for that profile.
I previously re-wrote the .htaccess file to redirect accordingly, however, was having problems finding pages on my site after I implemented the changes.
Even though I can see the traffic stats now, do you think I should still try and implement the redirect? Likewise, would implementing the 301 create navigation problems (i.e. 404s, pages not being found) if I don't implement some sort of dynamic URL re-writes to update all the site pages URLs?
-
Another thought - if you had set the domain's URL as website.com, but in fact nearly all traffic was going to www.website.com and you didn't have a 301 redirect in place to point the non-www version to the www version, that could cause the data issue as well, I think.
Was the non-www version 301 redirected to the www version?

Have you checked to see if you have any filters or custom segments running in the Analytics profile? This really sounds like a filter is distorting/blocking the data.
Try creating a clean profile of the website in the same account and see if it records data.
Also, when checking, keep in mind the GA is typically 24 hrs behind when reporting data (except for the Real Time section of course)

Oleg,
Thanks for getting back to me, I am using the asynchronous code and changing the date range, but it didn't help. Nevertheless, thank you for your suggestion!
-
Make sure you are using the asynchronous analytics code. Once you've added it to the site, view the source and make sure it appears exactly as you input it. Make sure you select today's date in the analytics range (default is yesterday).
-
What do you mean by 'putting the code on'? I would be happy to send you an example, just tell me what you'd like me to include in that?
-
hmm, pretty strange - you can always test it by putting the code on, and then viewing it in real time - you should see visits happening, especially if you open the site in a different browser.
You can send through an example and I'll be happy to take a look.

Using logical operators (AND / OR) in Google Analytics Goal Funnels
When setting up a Funnel within Google Analytics, is it possible to use logical operators (e.g. OR, AND) in the first (required) step of the funnel? For example, suppose I want to track users who visit page1.html AND page2.html before proceeding to the destination goal. I've entered two pages separated by the OR operator, and neither the "Verify this Goal" nor "Save" produces an error message - is it safe to assume that this is working as I intend? Thanks in advance!

How to FILTER in Google Analytics an ad campaign from linkedin?
Hi mozzers We are setting up an a linkedin ad campaign for our agency and want to track its traffic and conversions. The linkedin ad will carry UTMs for each link. For tracking this campaign accurately I thought about creating a new GA View with a specific filter. So my question is about the filtering, should i use the INCLUDE, REFERRAL with pattern LINKEDIN.COM (see image)? if not what would be the best way to track this campaign? My other concern is that we are also running other a job ad on linkedin and I feel these hits will be tracked as well. Is there a way to separate those 2 campaigns? Thanks guys! MzE5hqE.png

Google Analytics Custom Alert For Goal Completions?
Hi currently setting up custom alerts for a website. I want to do a custom alerts for when goal completions decrease or increase by a certain % e.g. 20% as shown in the third example from this Moz Article back in 2012 - http://moz.com/blog/7-essential-google-intelligence-custom-alerts-that-keep-me-sane However when i go into my GA account the only options seem to be for when the goal completion conversion rate % drops. I could use this, but i rather do just based on completions rather than %. Any ideas on how i can do this? Thanks.

Is it possible to use Google Tag Manager to pass a user’s text input into a form field to Google analytics?
Hey Everyone, I finally figured out how to use auto event tracking with Google Tag Manager, but didn't get the data I wanted. I want to see what users are typing into the search field on my site (the URL structure of my site isn't set up properly to use GA's built-in site search tracking). So, I set up the form submit event tracking in Google Tag Manager and used the following as my event tracking parameters: Category: Search Action: Search Value When I test and look in Google Analytics I just see: "search" and "search value." I wanted to see the text that I searched on my site. Not just the Action and Category of the event.... Is what I'm trying to do even possible? Do I need to set up a different event tracking parameter? Thanks everyone!

Referral Traffic vs. Campaign Traffic in Google Analytics
I have two sites: a blog and an ecommerce site. The blog funnels people to the ecommerce site. In Analytics I'm seeing declines in referral traffic from the blog to the ecommerce site. During the same time I'm seeing an increase in campaign traffic to the ecommerce site, with most campaign traffic coming from the blog. I believe the increase in campaign traffic is largely a result of simply having installed more tracking links. This leads me to believe that the declines I'm seeing in referral traffic is simply a result of the increase in campaign traffic. In other words, what was once counted and reported as being referral traffic is now being counted and reported as campaign traffic. So my question is this: In Google Analytics is campaign traffic ALSO reported as referral traffic, or is campaign traffic reported separately and not duplicated in referral traffic reports? I'll provide a concrete example to make this more clear in case it isn't: Say site X sends 1000 visits each month to site Y. Say 50 of those visits come from a single link on X. If that link is changed so that campaign Z data info added (via the Google URL Builder), would you expect to then see 950 referral visits each month from site X to site Y plus 50 campaign visits to site Y via new campaign Z, or would you continue to see 1000 referral visits plus the new 50 campaign visits? Many thanks in advance to anyone that can shed some light on this.

Google Analytic - Is it possible to see which organic keyword triggered goals?
Hi, I am trying to see which of my Google organic keywords triggered my goals? In GA I click > Conversion > Goals > Overview > Source Medium (This then says where my goals came from but when I click Google / Organic it just brings me to the overview page of my organic traffic). Is it possible to see which organic keywords trigger goals?

Google Analytics and DNS change
Our new alumni application is going be tested at domain uva.imodules.com . We are going to collect traffic data with a Google analytics account number UA-884652-XX. So going to uva.imodules.com/myPage.html would send its data to Google Analytics with that account number. Then when it is ready for production we are going to just change the domain name of the application and switch the DNS over to dardencommunity.darden.virginia.edu . So going to dardencommunity.darden.virginia.edu /myPage.html would send its data to Google Analtics with that SAME account number. Aside from having the testing domain data in the same profile are there any other issues/problems we may run into?
