Internal URLs competing for keyword
-
I have an affiliate site where we have reviews of bookmakers, which are optimized for the bookmakers name as a key word. We have seen a drop in rankings and at this point we are out ranked by a lot of pages including our own.
We also have a community forum and write news and articles about the the bookmakers. The thing is, that these forum threads and articles often out rank our review pages, which are the pages we need people to land on in order to convert.
This page: http://www.betxpert.com/bookmakere/bet365 is optimized for "bet365" and is at this point outranked by http://www.betxpert.com/artikel/ny-funktion-hos-bet365-afslut-vaeddemaal-foer-tid.
This page actually links to the review.
What should i do in order to increase ranks for my pages?
Make the forum threads and articles crappy for the key word?
Would it help to add a canonical link to the articles?
Would it help to remove the meta tag for update time of the review, such that Google does not downrank for not being recent?

The menu is on ALL pages. Is this a problem?
I feel that the link is relevant for any new user coming to the site. Will not seem spammy, i think.

Often, a direct link from the homepage can help the search visibility of the internal page being linked to (and others being linked to from that internal page). Exact match anchor text in your internal links won't get you penalized like they can in external links but you want to be sure they don't look spammy to visitors.

One follow up question.
A couple of years ago, i removed links to our reviews from our menu because i was afraid it would seem spammy. But as far as i can see, all the pages in our menu have good Page Authority. Would it be a good "trick" to put the bookmaker reviews back in the menu in order to give the pages more of the internal link juice?

Well, perhaps it is due to the affiliation with gambling. But, the pages outranking us, are also in affiliation with gambling.
Will try a little work towards link building and try to internally pass the link juice from the articles to the reviews.
Thank you for the replies!

I agree with everything Chris has said it's right on the money.
"Would it help to remove the meta tag for update time of the review, such that Google does not down rank for not being recent?"
Absolutely not it will make no difference whatsoever. Like Chris is explained Google is taking signals from many places however they are not going to be influenced or tricked by metadata tags.
It is possible because of your affiliation with gambling that Google is cracking down on that sort of site. However I could be wrong on that last one.
Sincerely,
Thomas

Rasmus,
You've got to build the value of the review pages in the eyes of your target audience. If Google's not ranking them highly enough, it's because Google's not thinking they're important enough. You have to take a really hard look at those pages as compared to those of the competitors that rank at the top of page one and come to terms with what's helping those pages rank well--it's probably links but could be discussion and engagement socially.
Today's SEO is less about the words you use on the page and more about how many people are showing that it's useful to them. When you construct your reviews, you need to keep a laser focus on who the target audience member who will share your content and you have to give them a reason to share yours over the competitors'. It's like concept research, instead of the old fashioned keyword research--you have to conceive of content that has an audience --an audience you can reach out to socially---and which doesn't have so many competitors that you can't get a foothold in the mindshare of your intended audience.
I say that because to me, your review page appears kind of run-of-the-mill (though I can't read it) and that there might not be much there that gives the audience a reason to chose it over someone else's review. It's time to beef up the content and then hit the social networks and bloggers to promote it.

How do I do keyword research when search volume is unknown
Hi Mozzers! I do a lot of work in niche areas, and one issue I often confront in keyword research is unknown search volume. That is, I'll be doing keyword research in Keyword Explorer or Gooogle Search Console, and for the most relevant keywords, I find either very low search volumes, null search volumes, or "Data not available." How do I make good keyword planning decisions when I can't find good data for search volume? Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Andy

Minor languages keyword research
Hello, I am in charge of doing a keyword research for several small countries in Europe, namely Hungary, Estonia and Latvia.
Keyword Research | | Lvet
I normally use the Keyword planner for Google Ads, but for Hungarian, Estonian and Latvian this tools seems to find no results for the keywords related to my websites. For example, in Hungarian the keyword "ajak toltoanyagok" ("lip fillers" in English) doesn't give any results (and yes, I am targeting my searches to Hungary and Hungarian). I have the same problems with Latvian and Estonian. Is there another tool that I could use and that could give me better results? Help! Cheers Luca rONwtZt0 -
Is this keyword cannibalization?
I have a product page and our home page ranked for the same keyword. On August 6th the product page was ranked #14 then plummeted to #60. On August 13th our home page was in the #2 spot (line just appears out of nowhere) and it is now in the #1 spot. I also see the same pages appearing for some keywords ranked in multiple positions then plummeting and one coming back up. I'm having a hard time understanding how the Keyword tool in Moz is reporting exactly. Thanks! To add to this: From Oct 8th to the 15th we jumped up from #60 to #16 for one keyword and then by Oct. 22nd are back down to #60. I have a huge spike on the 15th. Wondering if that had anything to do with any algorithm updates?

Does SEOmoz account for keyword variations?
If I want to know my rank for bank account, do I need to list bank accounts as well or will my ranking include variations? Also, if I use the word bank as a keyword, will any search that contains the word bank (even when other words are included) count towards the ranking for that word? Or would I need to add additional keywords like dallas bank, local bank, etc?

Is there any value to meta keywords?
The more I read the more I realize that meta keywords are not as helpful as they once were. Is there any SEO value to meta keywords anymore or should the emphasis be put on the content and title tags in regards to keywords? As always, I appreciate any feedback.

Keyword Research (dash or no dash)
I have a client that has been optimizing for "print and apply" for the past 5 months. Yesterday they decided it was more grammatically correct to use "print-and-apply." There question to me was "is this going to effect our SEO?" So... I checked the difficulty using the keyword analysis tool, both keywords had the same broad/exact adwords traffic as well as difficulty percentage. When reviewing the top 25 listings for each keyword it looks like the same sites rank in the SERPs between 1-8 and then after that it is completely different. So, is there a better keyword to target? Are these two keywords different enough to truly have separate search results?

The top 8 results didn't even target "print-and-apply" in there content or title tags... Thanks for the input/discussion - Kyle0 -
Do you use broad match or exact match on Adwords Keyword Tool when doing keyword research?
I wasn't sure whether to classify this as a discussion or a question. I'd love "the right answer" but I'm not sure if we're going to get one... Let's try. When you use the Adwords Keyword Tool for doing keyword research, do you use the numbers from "broad match" or "exact match" when comparing relative search volume of keywords? (And yes, I know the numbers need to be taken with a grain of salt, but when it comes down to it, you're using the numbers to compare and come to conclusions regarding the best keyword to use - so which match type gives you the data you're looking for?) To be a little more specific - when you select "exact match" for, let's say the keyword "baking supplies", is that telling you how many people searched for that phrase within quotes <"baking supplies">, or how many people searched for only <baking supplies="">, as opposed to that word within a phrase <baking supplies="" stores="">or with the words reversed <supplies baking="">?</supplies></baking></baking> Based on some keyword research we had done a year ago where any phrase reversals like <water bottles="">and <bottles water="">were coming out with the exact same numbers, even when it wasn't so intuitive that there would be the same search volume, we came to the conclusion - with the tentative suggestion of the SEOMoz staff on the old Q & A - that broad match would include all instances of the keywords in reverse order, so if you wanted to know how many people were searching for <water bottles="">only, you needed to use exact match. </water></bottles></water> That's what we did for about a year (I also think I saw Rand mention that somewhere in a presentation slide recently, although I could be mistaken and I don't recall exactly where it was to check it up) and then based on a recent forum discussion I had where someone was questioning that premise, I did another check with two KW reversals and while <water bottles="">and <bottles water="">still give the same number, <baking supplies="">and <supplies baking="">do not. </supplies></baking></bottles></water> So I'm left with a big question here as to what the best policy is. Google Adwords Help is very vague on what the match type means in the tool (it seems to be talking about only your settings for your campaigns). So - any input after this long saga? Thanks!

Invisible Long Tail Keywords
I've been doing some research on SEOmoz and have seen some posts relating to invisible long tail keywords. I have a couple of questions relating to this: Am I correct to understand that an invisible long tail keyword won't show any search in a tool like the Google Keyword Tool? If not, how do you define it? If an invisible long tail keyword has almost no search (or search that can be proven by an SEO researcher), how can you be confident that it will produce results?
