Matt Cutts - Guest posts are dead comment

It seems like it was a while ago now that Matt Cutts made his announcement "that guest posts are dead", however, does anyone know if Google has acted on this? Most particularly, for those that are targeting guest posts on high-quality sites, what has so far been the effect since the announcement on rankings? Anyone seen a dip in rankings from their high-quality blog post strategy?

I don't think anyone can say that guest post links pass nothing. We have no way of knowing which ones Google thinks are unnatural and which are natural. I do have a theory that with the next Penguin update Google will devalue links that they can tell for certain are in an author box as they are not really editorial votes for a site. But...that's just a theory.

Agreed that it wasn't significant however we were told they passed nothing. And now they may very well pass nothing - it was the statement I was questioning.

I've definitely worked on sites that had to remove guest post links in order to get a link based penalty removed. I have no doubt that overdone guest posting can get a site penalized. But, it's about quality and scale. In some cases, the "guest posts" were glorified article syndication. In other cases they were guest posts on good sites but done on a huge scale.
I believe that right now Google is penalizing some sites on manual review for overdone guest posting and my guess is that when Penguin rolls out, a lot of this will be taken care of algorithmically. That doesn't mean that you need to stop guest posting altogether though. For example, I'll still write posts for Moz and other good sites. But, my main reason for writing these is because they bring potential clients and traffic to me and they build my brand. When I'm guest posting I think, "Would I still want this link even if it were nofollowed?"
Should it still be part of an SEO strategy? I don't have a problem with getting some links from high quality sites via guest posts. But, I wouldn't make it a major part of the strategy by any means. I'd stay away from using keyword anchor text and I'd only guest post on sites that have good user engagement (i.e. don't exist just for the point of publishing guest posts) and I'd only do it occasionally.

I didn't put a lot of weight in that "study". They published a press release and showed that the link caused the site to rank for a made up term with zero competition. I don't think that they proved that press release links actually passed significant value.

However... I can't help but remember when links from Press Releases, according to Matt Cutts, were useless... then it was proven that they certainly did count. Or when exact match domains weren't supposed to help... but they still did...

This is clearly speculation on my part. It just seems this way sometimes.

Just browse through Q&A here and look for posts with a title something like...... "Wah! my rankings dropped." You can see plenty of people are still getting smacked.
Probably part of the reason is that people who are doing "high quality guest posts" today were doing "spam quality guest posts" last year and have that link profile on their site.... and some of the people who think that they are doing "high quality guest posts" today are really doing "spam quality guest posts".

Hello there, Some of my competitors have backlinks from very well-known newspaper websites like New York Post or The Sun. And it is really obvious that their backlinks are paid ones. On these news websites, they don't talk about ghost writing stuff or "partnership" for backlinks. They only write about banner advertising. So I was wondering how they can get a backlink from them.

External Backlinks - Should I remove/disavow external blog posts done by SEO company?
Last year my company hired an SEO company to build backlinks for targeted achor text keywords. It turns out that they wrote average to below average blog posts that had content related to my business, but that were placed on odd websites, not related to my business. They did this for about one year before I fired them. Should I try to get each of those blog posts removed and then disavow them? If the external links back to my site are nofollow then it is my understanding that I don't really need to worry about them...is that accurate? Is it too risky to keep any external backlinked content alive when it is on a site that is unrelated to my business?

Houzz Comment Links
A company I am working with has been posting pictures and links to their website in the comments section of Houzz articles. I notice many companies have been doing this in general. While it generates decent amounts of traffic, I am wondering if google sees 30 links coming from article comments that it will deem that as spam? My gut tells me to send these comment links to the Houzz member profile, then direct them to your own website. Thoughts? ***Anyone in home design, decor, etc. should really get involved there. Fantastic source of business for professional in that field.

How do you use anchor text post Penguin?
I have a client with several businesses within the same industry - Each of these businesses have their own websites. So, I have a few questions with this in mnd: **When using anchor text (exact keyword phrases) on his website pages, how many links are safe to use per page? And if I want to interlink between his businesses, is it better to use exact keyword phrases to link or just a straight URL link for those other businesses? **When guest blogging or using an external blog of our creation, is it best to use exact keyword phrases (and how many) or URL links? I want to make sure I am not over linking - help? thanks a lot

Guest Blogging as an Agency
Hi, I have the following problem regarding guest blogging. When sending out the pitch one can utilise the client's email so it appears coming from the business/client itself rather than an SEO agency. However the problem that I am facing is what author bio to use. Is it good to sign the posts as the internal SEO agency copywriters, as the client or I have found some suggesting to create a fake persona. Blog Comments
We all get them ... spam blog comments. People do it to get link value back to their site. Recently, someone approached me to do this for our site but on niche sites that are related to our content and to provide good valueable comments within a blog post of about 100 words each, and genuinely try to engage.They also were talking about finding blogs that have "follow" links in their comments space, since most do not. I still declined it because it is somewhat 'grey-hat' rather than 'white-hat' linking, and we want to be above-board on everything. Although we personally declined this approach, I'm curious your thoughts though on whether gaining links from blog comments from related, niche sites is a good idea. Like this question?
