Umbrella company is taking Domain and link strength!
-
Hi everyone! First thanks for reading this, I really appreciate it. The company I work for has two sites one is an event website and the other is a blog. The blog gets a great amount of the traffic and propels sales. The event website doesn't get much traffic but has been around for awhile and has garnered a 6 Google Page rank with a lot of backlinks and referring domains. The event website, though, has the same name of the company and this sometimes gets confusing when talking to businesses so the executives in charge want to make the event website an umbrella site for the company (very similar to Virgin's website). They will keep the event website but rebrand it with a new domain and basically start over. The good news about this is the event website, even though it has high link strength, has a lot of 404s because they had a previous database that they dumped leading to a lot of 404s (I made them change those to 410s).
Here's my issue. I want to keep the SEO strength of the event website for the event website. Could I do a 301 redirect for a couple months and then take it off and make the umbrella site? Would the strength pass? Or would it be possible to do a 301 redirect in the subfolders where most of the content and links are? Or would you recommend another method of transferring the strength of the site?

Hi Matt,
In general, my advice would be to achieve permanent 301 redirects at as granular a page/folder level as possible (prioritized by the current number of linking root domains - Open Site Explorer's Top Pages report is a great tool for this).
Where the rebranding & migration is concerned, I would strongly recommend reading through two resources here at Moz:
- Ruth Burr's overview of Moz's own fairly recent move (from SEOmoz.org to Moz.com) and
- Aleyda Solis's handy "Achieving an SEO-Friendly Domain Migration" infographic
Between both, I think you'll have your bases covered.
Best,
Mike -
Thanks Mike. The URL in question is Flavorpill dot com. There's been some talk of moving it to a new domain. Currently the site redirects you to new york or sf or la and all the events live on /events. I was thinking of, if we were to go to a new domain, to do 301 redirects on subfolders (new york, events, etc) and that might save some of the Google equity. There is a huge amount of links to the site and the site has been around for awhile so I'd like to keep that strength. There's also a lot of rebranding going on and I have said that I would like the rebranding to happen first before moving so some advice on that would be good as well.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,
Not sure I have a clear understanding of what you mean by "Could I do a 301 redirect for a couple months and then take it off and make the umbrella site?"
Any 301s you set up to pass link equity must be maintained permanently.
You can absolutely use 301s at the subfolder/page level, and if you can leave those redirects in place permanently this may be a solution for you.
The other option is to reach out to webmasters for your most valuable links and get those changed over to the new events site - can take a lot of time and isn't always successful, but it's often the best option to ensure link equity is maintained.
If you'd like to share more detail, I can circle back and provide more specific info. Hopefully the above helps to some degree.
Best,
Mike -
I see what you mean about the relevancy for the blog now. What would you recommend that I do. Do you know of any way I could keep the SEO strength? Would doing a 301 on subfolders work?
-
If I understand correctly the executives at your company want to use the domain that the current event site is on to create an umbrella site, but you want to keep SEO strength of that site but on a different domain?
I don't think that that would work how you want it to, because as far as I know once you take that 301 off, all of the links leading to the original domain are going to start counting towards that umbrella site and the even site will likely drastically drop in rankings.
The temporary might help to boost the new domain for the event site, but it's definitely a complicated situation and I'm not sure that there's a good way to go about it.
Also, you mentioned a blog at the beginning of your post but after reading it, it kind of seems somewhat irrelevant to your question.

301 Redirect Only Home Page/Root Domain via Domain Registrar Only
Hi All, I am really concerned about doing a 301 redirect. This is my situation: Both Current and New Domain is registered with a local domain registrar (similar to GoDaddy but a local version) Current Domain: Servers are pointing to Wix servers and the website is built and hosted with Wix I would like to do a 301 redirect but would like to do it in the following way with a couple of factors to keep in mind: 99% of my link are only pointed to the home page/root domain only. Not to subdirectories. New Domain: I will register this with wix with a new plan but keep the exact sitemap and composition of current website and launch with new domain. Current Domain: I want to change server pointing to wix to point to local domain registrar servers. Then do a 301 redirect for only the home page/root domain to point to the new domain listed with wix. So 301 is done via local registrar and not via Wix. Another point to mention is it will also change from Http to Https as well as a name change. Your comments on the above will be greatly appreciated and as to whether there is risk in trying to do a 301 redirect as above. Doing it as above it also cheaper if I do the 301 via the wix platform I will need to register a full new premium plan and run it concurrently to the old plan whereas if I do it as mentioned above will only have the additional domain annual fee. Look forward to your comments. Mike

Google WMT Turning 1 Link into 4,000+ Links
We operate 2 ecommerce sites. The About Us page of our main site links to the homepage of our second site. It's been this way since the second site launched about 5 years ago. The sites sell completely different products and aren't related besides both being owned by us. In Webmaster Tools for site 2, it's picking up ~4,100 links coming to the home page from site 1. But we only link to the home page 1 time in the entire site and that's from the About Us page. I've used Screaming Frog, IT has looked at source, JavaScript, etc., and we're stumped. It doesn't look like WMT has a function to show you on what pages of a domain it finds the links and we're not seeing anything by checking the site itself. Does anyone have experience with a situation like this? Anyone know an easy way to find exactly where Google sees these links coming from?

Canonical link vs root domain
I have a wordpress website installed on http://domain.com/home/ instead of http://domain.com - Does it matter whether I leave it that way with a canonical link from the domain.com to the domain.com/home/ or should I move the wordpress files and database to the root domain?

How does a competing website with clearly black hat style SEO tactics, have a far higher domain authority than our website that only uses legitimate link building tactics?
Through SEO Moz link analysis tools, we looked at a competing websites external followed links and discovered a large number of links going to Blog pages with domain authorities in the 90's (their blog page authorities were between 40 and 60), however the single blog post written by this website was exactly the same in every instance and had been posted in August 2011. Some of these blog sites had 160 or so links linking back to this competing website whose domain authority is 49 while ours is 28, their Moz Trust is 5.43 while ours is 5.18. An example of some of the blogs that link to the competing website are: http://advocacy.mit.edu/coulter/blog/?p=13 http://pest-control-termite-inspection.posterous.com/\ However many of these links are "no follow" and yet still show up on Open Site Explorer as some of this competing websites top linking pages. Admittedly, they have 584 linking root domains while we have only 35, but if most of them are the kind of websites posted above, we don't understand how Google is rewarding them with a higher domain authority. Our website is www.anteater.com.au Are these tactics now the only way to get ahead?

Linking to bad sites
Hi, I just have a quick question. Is it very negative to link to "bad" sites, such as online pharmacies, dating, adult sites, that sort of stuff? How much does linking to a "bad" site negatively affect a "good" site? Thank you.

Hiring an SEO company
I usually do SEO myself but now its time to move on to getting on with running the business. I have found a fantastic PPC company who ONLY focus on PPC and am looking for same but for SEO. Must be based in UK and have a great portfolio of mid/large tier companies with some real life stats to back them up. Pricing must be clear and transaparent. Results must be measurable. How would you find such a company? Ironically searching on Google doesn't seem to produce the right results 😞 Alastair
