Best practices to rank a new website that does not produce much content.
-
Hi
What would be the best practice for ranking a new site .. lets say a business site that does not have a blog to produce regular content in it. Building backlinks are not just the options when these days people are all focused in content marketing. And specially, when you are competing against big competitors.
Big competitors are of course getting their contents published on bigger sites since they are already established. No one will talk about you when you are new in the market. And you still need to bring up your site to people and SEO is the only option for that.
What would you suggest ?
Thanks

You're welcome. Great insights as usual. And this just further emphasizes the importance of content as well as how it relates to organic rankings. If a company has no interest in using words written well, search doesn't have much interest in it.

Thank you Ryan, I am glad that you liked that post.

At my office we are a small business up against big competitors and spend zero money on PPC. All of our sales come from organic rankings. We have 3 full time and one part time people working with occasional help from consultants. Two people spend almost 100 percent of their time on content. The other person does fulfillment and inventory work. The part time person does administrative work. I hope that shows the importance that I place on content.

How is this business different or unique when compared to its competitors? What would be the pros and cons of this business in the mind of its future customers? Is this site / business serving a highly localized clientele?
EGOL said it very well in a Q&A a while back:
If this client has "a dream" then you tell that client to... sell their baseball cards... get a second job..... borrow from their uncle... get a home equity loan.... quit their expensive habits... walk to work... do anything that they can do to "finance their dream".
If they are not willing to finance their own dream you don't want to finance it for them. If they ain't got skin in the game they ain't serious and you better take your ball and find a new game.
They should realize that "good SEO" done on a "good business" has the ability to "fund itself" after an initial investment. So, if they raise the money mentioned above them should have enough to launch it.
From this Q&A: http://moz.com/community/q/how-do-you-approach-a-client-that-is-in-a-very-competitive-market-and-doesn-t-have-the-budget-to-make-a-dent. Similar principles could apply for this business as well it seems.

When products are discontinued- best way to handle pinned or googled images
What do you lose by deleting a product and it's images from an e-commerce site? We have many product images with pinterest pins and shares or that show up on google images searches. Our site is an active American craft gallery with jewelry, art and handmade gifts from about 300 different artists. Most products are made in small quantities others are 1 of a kind. So we often have products selling out. Most items are organized by artist. Are there good practices to follow that will best keep our social media presence and links? I'd also like to stop buying extra space for all those images on my server Thanks so much Stephen

Why is Google appending a different website's brand name to the end of SERP title?
I've recently been shown some SERP results where Google is appending a different website's brand name to the end of the SERP title. It's actually rewriting the brand's name to that of the other website. (This is obviously not ideal.) Why would this be? The other website doesn't even stock the same product, so there shouldn't be any confusion there. But even if it did, many websites stock the same products. Just confusing...

Linkedin: Inshares - Can I see who inshared my content?
Hi All, Just wondering... since the demise of Linkedins' Signal tool, is there a way to actually see who and where my content is being shared on Linkedin? Blog posts being published at the minute are getting inshares almost as soon as they're live and I want to know who's doing it. Any advice would be appreciated.

What To Do With Content From SEO Perspective
With all the SEO focus now on creating and sharing unique and high quality content I ensure that is exactly what we do, however... All we seem to do is add this content to our blog with some good quality images to break up the text. Our articles are at least 800 words in length and they are always informative... Once added to our blog we share the content across the 'big 3' social platforms (Facebook, Twitter & Google+) I also do a little bit of 'internal linking' from the blog post to a relevant page on the main website - the blog is actually part of the website! So, my question is... in light of the recent 'guest post' scaremongering and the fact that every blog owner I seem to 'reach out' wants payment should I look at Web2.0 platforms such as; Squidoo Hubpages Quora Triberr ...and the many other similar sites that exist to add some of our content to? Also what about Article Directories? Ezinearticles GoArticles I know this seems like a 'throwback' to 2-3 years ago but I just wondered whether the above still have any credence? Obviously I would be very selective with regard to 'back linking' and would ensure that I vary the anchor text - to be honest, as much as a link would be useful, it's more about brand exposure ... Any advice \ recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Andy

Blog - separate domain or current website?
I have created a business blog purely to gain higher rankings for particular keywords which then has links pointing to the product that I am trying to sell. My question... Is it better to have this blog hosted on the same domain or shall I move it to a separate domain which will help with backlinks? Any advice would be appreciated?

A new form of competition with self
Today I discovered a new type of ranking competition. I'm still investigating, so I don't know all the details, but I think it's like this. In addition to our online store, we also sell our products via Amazon Merchant. We are the only distributor in the US, so I was surprised to see our products offered at a modest number of other sites, often with very elevated prices (not linking to Amazon, but actually selling our product on their site). I shot the product images and the images are mine. Now Sears is selling our product on Sears.com through one of their merchant sellers. The prices are grossly inflated, and the Sears Google ranking are pushing us out of places we used to be. I'm guessing that if someone actually purchases our product via Sears.com, the order will be forwarded to our Amazon listing for fulfillment, and the reseller will pocket the price difference minus a percentage for Sears. I will follow up with both Amazon and Sears, but regarding the competition with your own Amazon merchant product listings, is this a known problem? Best,

Video's Pros and Cons - YouTube vs My website or both?
This isn't really a question per say, but more of a request for advise. We are in the process of creating videos for our travel website. They are more informational and do not promote any products as such. I am aware of the options, and I am leaning towards creating a pro account with Vimeo so that the videos are available only on our website. The reason for this is so that we can at least get credit for our work, as when they are on you tube, anybody can syndicate the video without linking to our website. I am also aware that there are allot of searches happening on YouTube, and it may be worse if we choose not to upload our videos there as we would loose out on a big audience. it would be GREAT if we had the best of both options. And i had an idea i want to get your opinions on. Create the video and upload onto our website with "lower competitive" title / meta / body. Submit the video on YouTube with a "Higher competitive" keyword / title /meta and description. When someone finds our video, they might search YouTube to avoid linking back and wont find it, (although it is there getting traffic from a similar keyword) Branding is the number 1 objective for these videos, so you tube + many other video sites would be the way to go. However, i would also like our own "private" video blog on our site so that if web masters like the video, we can give them the option of embedding it on there site (like SEOMOZ do it on there whiteboard Fridays) Your comments and suggestions will be muchly appreciated. 301 Redirect Old Established Site to New Business Model Site?
I have a client who has a website which is getting fairly descent traffic in the current industry its in. He is launching a new business model, same industry. New domain, new brand etc. Is it better to keep both entities separate and try growing them both? Or would it be more effective in terms of acquiring ranks and traffic to 301 redirect the old established site to the new site? Transferring all the value from the old and instantly boosting the new model. Not sure if this ads anything to the topic, the new domain is also an exact domain keyword match for a highly searched term.
