Is there any data available on how deeplinking contribute to improve domain authority?
-
Let's say you are collecting backlinks across a variety of pages for foo.com, like: foo.com/clown, foo.com/juggler, foo.com/lion-tamer and so on...
Page Authority will benefit for each of those pages, but what is going to happen to Domain Authority?
Is there any data available? Any educated guess in what's the best strategy to try to get best results for both PA and DA?
-
Your opinion is reassuring. Thanks.

In order to truly test this at scale, you'd need a very large number of sites and a huge swath of testable, organic linking sites - probably not feasible.
However, I can tell you that IMO, it doesn't matter much. If the links are organic and editorial, Google probably doesn't care whether they point to deep pages or the homepage. Some sites get a lot of press, which means they get links to their homepage. Other sites have lots of links to their content, which means they get deep links. I honestly doubt Google cares much which it is - what matters more is the quality and editorial nature of the linking sources.

Hi Rand,
it's helpful.
But I can narrow my doubts/question to this: what is a safe range for the ratio of deeplinks vs rootlinks to get the best results?
If a website is getting a lot of deeplinks and few links to the root domain, google could perceive those pages as highly relevant but do not reward the domain as a whole?
I know what you are thinking, since google algo is not on github, we don't know exactly.
But if you at MOZ calculate DA as you explained, is probably because you think google is doing something similar, and thus rewarding a domain as a whole for it's deeplinks?
Hence, in terms of the broader SEO concept of Domain Authority, should we assume a website with 0 rootlinks and many deeplinks is getting a similar authority as if it had all rootlinks?
I know this is highly speculative, that's why at the beginning I was asking if anyone had some data/analysis on this subject.
Thanks a lot of your time!

Ciao Massimiliano
It depends on what you mean by "Domain Authority/DA." If you meant the DA score in Moz's tools, that's primarily impacted by the Page Authority of the collection of pages on the site (which, in turn, are affected by external links that point to them). The more links to any page on a domain, the higher DA typically rises.
If you're talking about the broader concept of Domain Authority as it relates to SEO, there are many more elements that likely figure into how Google calculates a site's importance and its relative authority/relevance in a particular space. Certainly a large part of that is still links, but visit data (from Chrome, Android, ads, etc), search data (branded searches, search traffic sent to the site, relative satisfaction of search visitors, etc), and others (stuff around entities, citations, brand name usage, social media, etc) probably make it into the algorithm in one way or another (sometimes indirectly).
Hope that's helpful!

In this whiteboard friday Rand is addressing this topic, and it's interesting that many (diverse) deep-links from same domain are quite valuable.
http://moz.com/blog/whiteboard-friday-link-diversity
But yet I can't find any clue about the effect on DA.

Got it now clearly.
Ok I am going to answer your question from my little brain. It will better if you use 60% + home page linking, or inner page 20-30% is enough. Its really tough to give you exact data analysis. I know its not enough for you. But I tried to give you something.
-
Maybe my question is not clear enough. I am not asking about a strategy to get backlinks. I know how to get backlinks.
What I don't know is if there's any analysis, study, data, test... Supporting any particular strategy on how to diversify backlinks among home and internal pages.
In other words, to be more clear... Let's make two examples (just for the sake of being understood).
Is there any analysis, study, data, anything... Saying that is generally better to have 50% of backlinks to homepage and 50% to internal pages. Or is better to have 90% of backlinks to homepage and 10% to internal pages, etc...

I got a nice comment from Matt-Williamson. I also agree with it. You can follow it. I think, it will help you.
"To increase your Domain and Page Authority you need to increase links to your website and in particular your homepage if you want to increase that specifically. To do this you need to think how can you create some decent content that is link worthy and then you need to make sure it gains exposure so that it will start to gain links. There are lots of ways that you can increase your link profile using things such as:
- In depth product reviews,
- A blog (consider encouraging and rewarding guest bloggers that are authorities in your niche as they will have a strong, relevant following),
- How to videos in relation to your products and how they might come in when carrying out a task for instance,
- Content curation is also an idea (some decent articles on this on SEOMoz).
Now for the exposure; best place to start is to build up your social networks and start to interact and form relationships with people that are likely to have an interest in your products, in particular those that are authorities in your niche/product area. Then when you have built relationships with them you can expose them to your new content, which will then hopefully get passed on to their social following and through this you will start to gain links and more attention slowly establishing yourself as an authority in the process - win win situation!
If you do this and work hard at it your DA and PA will increase as you want it to. Just remember that when you are building links in a post penguin world don't over do the anchor text and always go for quality links over quantity, don't start using dangerous methods, such as forum signature and blog comments. Hope this helps - Good Luck!" Beside I will say, you can try this small strategy, Cause i am using this strategy, it helped me for increasing Both point.
1. Comment on Relevant Authority Blogs
2. Update Your Blog Regularly
3. Increase Indexed Pages 4. Increase Backlinks
5. Increase social signal. -
I know DA is increasing as well. I can see that. But I have no idea of what correlations are there. And if there's any best practice or strategy to maximize benefit for both.
-
When you are collecting backlink from those page, then you said, i got PA benifit, what's DA ? Now qestion to you ? Why you think, Is there no benifit for your DA ?
By the way, when i worked that kind of work, i saw that, its increasing both point. Quality Backlink are always give you good DA & PA.. But remove toxic backlinks. Be patitent.

Www.partybox.co.uk - Why cannot improve the position for "party supplies"
About 4 Months ago I submitted a Disavow file to Google for www.partybox.co.uk which seemed to have improved the position across many terms. However the main term "party supplies" I cannot get to rank any higher than page 6 in the UK. I have no penalties in webmaster tools. Should I see if I can collect anymore links that could be holding the website back for ranking for party supplies or what should i be looking to do ? The website ranks well for other terms that the home page is optimised for such as party stuff but not for party supplies any advice would be great thanks Adam

Niche Market without impartial authority for links
We've had trouble with one of our brand websites for years now in SERP rankings. When I first started working here 3 years ago I stated that the site lacks a content foundation to build on. A large number of our pages do not have proper text content or had duplicate content, there was no consideration of keyword usage in any title or body copy, and there was absolutely no reason for anyone to want to link to the site. I'm not a copy writer so I've pushed to get one hired, if even just on a freelance basis, to at least get some kind of content on the pages that I could work our keywords into. I'm hoping that soon they will finally start listening to me and we'll get that content in place. However, even with the content we have the problem of our market not having an impartial authority site that we could be linked from to help us build our own authority. The current authorities for our keywords are competitors. They've been doing a better job with their SEO and for a lot longer than us. The nature of our business restricts us from displaying pricing on our site which I feel is another major strike against us when it comes to organic link backs. We do not sell direct, all of our sells are made through authorized dealers and each dealer has their own territory that does not compete with each other. Additionally we do not have a MSRP and even if we did our dealers would explode if we advertised it on the site since there is such a wide range of dealer pricing. The only good thing we have going for our site currently is a new redesigned layout that makes it easier for users to navigate and get the information they need. I feel it is still to cluttered but I have to make the brand manager happy and that person insists on adding clutter that is not necessary. Additionally we added a new tool to the website, a custom tool that uses javascript and canvas to allow visitors to build their own product and request a price from their local dealer. The links we have to our site right now are from PR sites and sites that do not have any authority in regard to our target keywords. A while back we asked our dealers to help out by adding a link to our site from theirs. This was initiated by a third party company who had delusions of understanding SEO and so the links our dealers have work great for ranking us for our brand name but not so much in regard to the keywords we want to place for. Plus not every dealer is doing it. Our top competitors have over 3x the links to their sites than we do so we have a lot of catching up to do in that respect. And when I look at the sites that are linking to them it's, again, news and PR sites mostly. My line of thinking currently is to get our content issues under control and get all of our dealers linking to our site with properly constructed anchor text. I'm also trying to push to have more and more frequent press releases sent out to a wider range of sites than we currently target. I want to submit the customizer tool we developed (6 months of work and improvements/additions to be done in the future, so we're kinda proud of it) to sites that like to link to such things but so far I've not been able to find any. I'm just not searching for the right thing to find them is my guess. A few other ideas I've had is to reduce the page depth of many of our pages, mainly our product pages since they're 4 levels deep right now. I'm not sure if that's worthwhile though. How important is the url structure and keyword usage in them and how many levels should I try to keep from exceeding? We have an infographic on our site that generated a few links, are things like that really worth the time and effort though? Would it be better to focus our attention on something else instead? What I want to know is if my thinking is right and if there is anything else we should be doing that I haven't thought of yet. Or if I'm off base with all of this and we need to be focusing on something else entirely. Thanks in advance for any help/insight!

PR4 blog but no data in OSE?
I've recently been asked to guest post on a site that appears to be PR4 but when checking the sites authority on OSE no data shows up. The site is http://www.osozo.com. I'm looking for opinions really, first of all on how it can be PR4 but OSE has no data on it and secondly whether it's a good site for me to post on? Any help much appreciated!

Why is my domain authority 1?
Hello all, I have my own MMA news website which I started almost two years ago. After getting a Seomoz account I noticed that my domain authority for this website (www.mmaplanet.nl) is 1! All my other websites have 'normal' domain authority. Does someone know what might be the problem here? Thanks in advance!

Combining two domains
Hi guys, a friend of mine has two sites. They both have a fair few links pointing to them, so I think it would be a shame to lose/ignore one of them. Some of the links are low quality, from previous link building efforts, however at the moment I can't see any real penalisation from Google, so my guess is that it's currently ok... I'm aware that I'll have to remove some of the legacy low quality links soon. My question is what should I do? Will combining the two websites help? The main site is Gazebo Shop, but there's another exact match domain to consider... I'd like to keep the main website on the first URL, as that's the one I'm redeveloping now. Thanks for any help! Edit: I should add to my question: Should I redirect individual pages to my new category pages to pass Page Authorty/Rank?

Millions of links from one domain - unnatural?
I have a question: One of the sites that I work for has 3.1 million site-wide links (according to WM Tools) from one domain pointing to us. This domain has a Domain Authority of 93. We have (according to OSE) more than 3, 500 Domains linking to us. We have a Domain Authority of 88. In other words, one of those 3,500 domains is highly reputable, and is sending us 3.1 million site-wide links. This represents 60% of all the links pointing to us (again according to WMTools). Is this something to be worried about? Or delighted about? Would you consider it an unnatural link profile?
