There is a website that OSE has identified with a spam score of 5, it back links to me with a very specific key word. How important is it to have them remove those links?

Hi Margaret,
You should read this review on the Moz spam tool written by Marie Haynes, who is quite knowledgeable on link removal & spammy links. Basically, the tool can be useful, when used in combination with other tools and with manually reviewing the links themselves. So don't take decisions only based on the score of the tool - Ryan made some valuable points on how to determine if a link is spammy. You should also read this post by Marie on how to identify unnatural links.
Based on these elements, you can make a decision whether or not to disavow these links.
rgds,
Dirk

Hi Margaret. As discussed on the blog post here: http://moz.com/blog/spam-score-mozs-new-metric-to-measure-penalization-risk the tool is just one facet of identifying what sites Google may consider spammy. A score of 5 is currently just outside of the green / ok part of the tool so it's likely very low risk.
In addition to the tool though, consider the site itself.
- Do they moderate their comments (deleting comment spam)?
- Is the link relevant?
- Is it on a page that is semantically aligned to what you do?
- Is the link text to your site accurate?
- Does there site get a lot of links from red / danger spam sites?
Those are just some of the things to consider. But it should become fairly clear with a little investigation. Like Khem says, it's better to use the tool to identify trends, versus dissecting more granular details. Cheers!

it is not at all important if just 2% or 3% low quality websites are back linking. Search do understand these things and doesn't react to this. However, it can really be harmful if the percentage is really high, lets say 20% or more.
Though, you can still get that link removed or Disavowed it though GWT.
Hope this helps.

Removing spam back links (Using GWM and SEOMOZ)
Hi, I have noticed that I have got some unwanted spammy back-links. I want to get rid of them. From what I read on Internet, there are two ways to doing it. Using disavow tool in GWM. Contacting individual webmaster and asking them to remove the mentions or links. I have already added the links in the disavow tool and Google has accepted the request. Is it necessary to ask those webmasters to remove the link as well?

Old Links Remove or not to remove?
Hey everyone, So i have a site which I had previous seo work on over the years, none of which was successful for me. Now that I have taken over the seo work, I am analyzing my old links I have a certain amount of links from what I would see are "crappy" seo sites and I wondered if I need to try and remove them. Here are a few examples. http://seorankingsresult.com/what-to-consider-when-shopping-for-electricians-tools/ http://seoservicepackages.com/tag/electricians-tools/ How do I check if google has penalized me for these links and should I start removing them? ThanksMichelle

Do VigLink links get indexed, and then pass SEO juice to the merchant?
You can find the service at viglink.com, they do dynamic linking to anchor text for participating publishers on a cost-per-click basis. Less interested here in the conversion quality and more interested in the broad SEO value. Any ideas?

Getting links - the actual final approach to do so
Hi All, So once you use OSE Tool to point you in the right direction of sites that might be able to give you links, what are the best practices for then reaching out to the website? I get that you need to give value in your request for a link and offer something of value – but what else to think about?? Ie Call them, email them, email who? Follow up with phone call??? Do you just use the standard contact form on their website? Presumably you need to track all this, just do it in a spreadsheet? What do you say in the email? Do you offer them a link (if you can?) I guess it’s a thing that sounds easy enough – go get a link – but I would imagine that people who have done this enough with some success can maybe share some of the things that particularly worked or did not work… At the moment it just seems a daunting / time consuming task - even thinking of getting an intern to help do all this – pros and cons to that as well??? Thanks for your time!
