Gathering links
-
There are numerous "Ultimate Guides" to linkbuilding, outreach, etc., and they are all written to teach you the art of linkbuilding.
The only thing these guides don't tell you is that following them takes a massive amount of time and doesn't guarantee to get good links at all.
We're all in online marketing, and maybe we online marketeers are familiar with linking to other websites, posts that we like, etc. and maybe that's why we can write these guides but in other niches it really doesn't work that way
I'm wondering what techniques/tactics/strategies you guys are using in less straightforward niches to get quality links to your blogposts.
To give you an idea, we launched an article a couple of weeks ago targeting a very competitive keyword. The article got shared over 100 times on LinkedIn/Twitter/etc. and already ranking pretty good, but REAL backlinks are still missing. How to get people to link to that article?

Thanks for the well documented answer. Didn't go through all the resources mentioned yet, but I know what I'm doing tonight I think

No worries - only been out a week or so I think

Hi there
I have some suggestions...
-
Do some research
-
What information is missing in your industry?
-
What are users actively searching for?
-
Where are they currently participating in conversation?
-
What language do they use in search and those discussions?
-
How do they digest their content?
-
Here's a quick resource on content gap analysis from Edge Multimedia
-
Take advantage of great tools like Open Site Explorer and SEMRush to get a handle on your competition and what's working / not working for them
-
Build out content on the site based on your research
-
Mind your obvious onsite SEO fundamentals (titles / meta descriptions / schema / content length and language / etc.) (resource)
-
Lay your site architecture out in an easy to use / understand fashion (Information Architecture for SEO)
-
Repurpose content through video / images / guides / e-books / how-tos / etc
-
Take advantage of internal site search functionality
-
What are users searching for on your site?
-
Ask for feedback or input to include from other industry authors or sites
-
If you ask others to participate, they might share your content or include a link on their site
-
Distribute that content through social platforms / industry blogs / email marketing / distribution networks (resource)
-
Reach out to various industry outlets and influencers to let them know you wrote a piece they may find valuable
-
Offer your articles as data points for future content created on other sites
-
Offer your articles or pieces as solutions to problems
-
Offer your articles or pieces as updates to other sites content
-
Participate in the discussions that are happening in your industry
-
Social
-
You could take advantage of features like Twitter's Advanced Search and start fielding questions
-
Use Advanced Search to answer questions with your content
-
News sites
-
Industry forums

Q&As
All of the above will help with not only the ideation of content, but it will also establish you as an accessible authority in your industry. When you develop that trust with your audience and peers, they trust what you share and create, thus they are more likely to not only share your content, but link to it as well.
If your content has a clear audience and goal, you will be surprised to find how easy it is to find link building opportunities and who to reach out to to obtain them. Offer value and the links will come, it's just a matter of research and building relationships with your audience and other industry outlets/peers.
Link building is a slow burn process, but once it gets going, it's easier and easier and easier.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Inbound link is follow link but we put no follow link back - is it beneficial for rankings?
Dear Moz Community, We are operating in a niche market, where there are not so many content marketing options. What we are left with are link exchanging with relevant sites that are on the same topic but to not directly compete with us. Now we know that if we link back to site A and site a links back to us - for google this is not a very good link. But, some of the sites we are exchanging links with, do not know the term follow vs no follow links. My question - if your link is to site A is a no follow link but they give us a follow link - does it mean thats a better option than a follow vs follow. Thanks for help!

Question about inbound links
Hi! Hi have a little doubt. I'm interested in getting higher positions for a landing page with a long tail keyword. Now the page (ecommerce product page) appears in position 5 and have a low authority domain site and page. My intention is to put more original text in the page and write a blog post with a link pointing to the product page. My doubt is: What is better? Building the blog into the same domain or build it into a high authority external domain (like wordpress), what link could be better for my objectives? Thanks! (And sorry for my English)

Internal Linking
OSE only shows me as having 24 internal links on my home page. My internal links and total links are far less than my competitors, some of whom have 1700 on a single page. My site is www.CenterCityTeam.com and an example of a competitor with far more internal links is www.McCannTeam.com. 1) How do I get that many internal links on a page and 2) do I even want to?

When pitching a whitepaper as Push Content for Link Building, is it ok to give the person I'm pitching a link to a landing page with a form on it?
When pitching a whitepaper as Push Content for Link Building (i.e. pushing out content that my client has created), is it ok to give the person I'm pitching a link to a landing page with a form on it? Or should I create a landing page with the whitepaper included on it? I’m not sure if the client will be ok with this b/c I know they use the whitepaper for sales purposes to gain leads. For example, my pitch email would include a line such as this, "the whitepaper can be found at LINK and I'd love if you could share it with your readers." I think it may be weird/a little wrong to ask a webmaster to include a link on his site to a landing page with a form to get the whitepaper. Does this make sense? What have others done with whitepapers as Push Content for link building?

Reciprocal links
I've heard that reciprocal links don't count anymore. If i stop linking to a person that links to me, will that link to my website start counting? Do reciprocal links count at all in google? Anchor text? anything? Thanks in advance! Ron

How many nofollow links should we build to have a natural link profile
Hi guys, As with many link builders we have been building lots of dofollow links for our site, so many that mainly our incoming links are dofollow. Some pages have 99.5% dofollow external links which I know is not very natural. In your experience in terms of percentage how much should you have in terms of nofollow external links in your link profile. I noticed SEOMoz has about 12-13% nofollow external links, shall I go with this figure? Thanks guys. David
