Best length for a video on a website
-
Most of us deal with UI/UX questions and SEO questions from clients on a daily basis. I was discussing video length with a client recently and I realized that he was in his video. This made me think about the thrill of seeing yourself in video might cause someone to make their video longer at the expense of UX. So, I thought I would put it to the Moz community. If a company is doing a "typical" home page "Explainer" video that tells about a company. This can be in the B2B or B2C sectors. I want to withhold my opinion at this point for the discussion.
-
When I worked in the newspaper industry and they started to use video, we were always told to keep it to under a minute and a half - I think if you go beyond that then people lose interest. Even so, if you go to the full time it has to be interesting throughout. The shorter the better really and don't do it for the sake of it - it has to add something for the viewer.
-
The answer to this would have to be "it depends" but in general my opinion would be a home page explainer should be 30-60 seconds.
But this is a clear situation where opinions or personal preferences are useless - let the data tell you what the visitors demand. This question screams for split testing - or at the very least doing close Analytics tracking via events to know how many even start the video, how long they watch, and whether they watch to the end.
Just showing the client that - say - fewer than 20% watch the video past 30 seconds would settle the discussion pretty quickly.

I appreciate this and that you added two to three minutes. I was trying to avoid detail for fear of contaminating people's opinions. My discussion came up with a service business that wanted what we call an explainer video. In other words: this is the problem, this is the solution, and this is why we are the choice.
Typically, I do not like these to run beyond 90 seconds and feel like anything closer to 60 seconds is better. The one for this client is animated, but we have another client who does videos and "stars" in them. They tend to be longer and, in agreement with your first point, I think they lose people. Thanks again, EGOL,
Robert

Even the tiny businesses that I run have a diversity of clients and types of clients. Far too many to summarize well in one short video. I believe that the message should be customized different types of clients.
If I was making videos they would be one click below the homepage. There I would post very short videos that simply present the product range, the value propositions that we offer our clients, and the support that we provide to help clients be successful. What we do for YOU.
Each business service or major product category would have one of these videos.
Instead of showing the CEO's face in these videos, I think it would be better to feature the staff members who will do the actual work and interface with the clients. Show staff in the work areas and offices where client work is accomplished. The goal is to show the experts who offer their skills and services and the assets that we have to accomplish the work.
How long? Two or three minutes.
I think it would be better to cover a limited range of information. That way the video is relevant to the listener's interests and not go into services that are not what the visitor has clicked into.

+1
This remind me when i talking about websites with some movie director. His idea was "all sites should have something cover page, when you visit it for first time you should see it. Even see this page every time on your visits as initial.". I was WTF?

I agree, this is excellent. So, assuming that it is about their services how long are you willing to endure? Obviously, if they are not getting to a point, etc. you are going to leave before it ends no matter what. My interest in this is in trying to get clients to understand what works vs. what looks good to them.
Do you look at video length when you begin to watch it or before you hit play? Does a certain length make you less likely to go forward? Thanks as always EGOL,
Robert

"typical" home page "Explainer" video that tells about a company.
I'd rather see explainer videos about products and services. Information that I want and need.
An explainer video "about a company".... sounds kinda sleepy.... I go to Wikipedia for that type of info because C-level company people are going to be thumpin' their chests and I'd rather read just the facts, presented with lots of subheadings so I can jump over what I don't need to know.

Google ranking penalty: Limited to specific pages or complete website?
Hi all, Let's say few pages on the website dropped in the rankings due to poor optimisation of the pages or hit by algo updates. Does Google limits the ranking drop only to these pages or the entire website will have any impact? I mean will this cause ranking drop to the homepage for primary keyword? Will Google pose the penalty to other pages in the website if few pages drop in the rankings. Thanks

Images added to website automatically become URLs - is this an issue?
Hello Mozzers! I've just been trawling through a website and noticed all of the images had their own URLs. There's a bespoke CMS and that's how it works with images... So out of 1447 urls, 1314 are images. Firstly, is this an issue / problem from an SEO perspective. If it is, how should I deal with it? Thanks in advance, Luke

Best way to geotag
Hi guys - this question isnt strictly SEO its more of a programming one. I am currently building a directory with a number of different retail shops listed there. At the moment I have google map installed there but I have to drag and drop the pin - rather than google searching the address I input and putting it in themselves automatically. Can anyone point me to documentation on how to get this to word properly? Whether or not I can get the above to work aside - could someone tell me how to use the google drop pin to get the co-ordinates and and correctly add them into the page header? Finally - I want to geotag all images on the page with the same coordinates as the droppin too (as the pictures are taken on premises). Can anyone recommend software that might be able to do this en mass automatically? Thanks in advance Alex

How to find which keywords bring traffic to a particular page on my website ?
I have been using Google Analytics and SEOMoz tools for a while now. I know which are my top landing pages and some of the keywords which bring me traffic. But I don't know which are the top searched keywords for my website as these are "not provided" by Google Analytics. More importantly, I want to know which keywords are directing traffic to a particular page on my website. Can anyone help ?

What is the best way to organize a catergory for SEO purpsoes?
I work for a organic vitamin and supplement company and we are looking to rank for our categories by making more specific categories. For example we are going to try to add under the category "vitamin d" some smaller more relevant (longer-tail) categories like "spray vitamin d" and "vegan vitamin d" and try to rank instead for these searches and also searches containing words that we already have more authority from Google like "natural" or "organic". I know that putting the product pages a level deeper will only hurt us so I want to avoid that but I'm wondering if anyone has some advice on how to organize categories for longer tail keywords that we actually have a chance to rank for. Any help to figure this out would be greatly appreciated. Here is our page as it is currently, like I said we want to create sub categories that are effective for SEO, but also make searching and navigating the site easier. http://www.mynaturalmarket.com/Vitamin-D.html Thanks, ThatKwameGuy

Best practice for someone wanting to repost / translate some of your blog posts?
I've been contacted by several sites (a few in other countries) who would like to repost some of our articles on their site. A few of these are in other countries and they would like to translate them in their language. (we have a site about raising a child with Down syndrome so they are wanting to use our info to help people...not "beat us" in rankings, or anything like that.) I didn't know what the best practice on this was. I don't want to get dinged for duplicate content or have someone rank higher than me for my own article, etc. Just curious what the best way to go about this was. I'm also assuming the articles that are translated wouldn't be an issue at all since the content will be in another language. Is this right? Thanks!

Content on Wordpress blog inside the main website for SEO
Hi, We have our main website and our blog on blog.practo.com. Now what I see is that we wish to write in content to grow our seo keywords and links. Should we put the blog as www.practo.com/blog and then begin writing all the content or we should put the wordpress blog as www.practo.com/(wordpress blog here) and then begin writing the content. For best practices I suppose we should have content lined up as www.sitename.com/category/article name etc or www.sitename.com/article name etc - am I correct? Our main site consists of few html pages and then we have our software on a different sub domain. What are the best ways to publish content and get it crawled at a faster rate for growth? I would also wish to understand how to measure the number of growth in % to our content we are writing. Only via google analytics or some other tool? Say I wish to see the growth of 10 articles from month of may and compare it to the month of april or march 2012. So what tools could I use to see if we are progressing or not? Thanks

Are multiple domains for my website hurting my Google ranking?
Hello, I currently have two domains showing up in google search: shwoodshop.com shop.shwoodshop.com These domains are currently ranked in the #2 and #3 spot, however my page is much more trafficked than the current #1 ranking. I am wondering if the fact that I have two domains competing for the #1 spot is hurting my search ranking. If so, what is the best way to remedy this issue and get back my #1 spot? I'm rather new to SEO and teaching myself as I go, so I appreciate the feedback!
