January 2016: Massive Rankings Fluctuations
-
Hi guys.
For past 2.5-3 weeks We've been experiencing lots of changes in our rankings, unfortunately, mostly going down. Our website is regexseo.com. I Know there was a January 12 "core update" in Google Algorithms, but there is no any specific information I can find.
Now, here is what doesn't make sense to me and it's the same reason I'm worried if we are doing something wrong (or not doing something right? - we've been rankings for "web design houston" in positions 2-4 for years, and recently after months of work we finally got to positions 4-6 on "seo houston". But during last two weeks we got down to beginning of the second page
Our backlink profile is growing, traffic to website is growing over all and stable to main landing pages (+/- 5%), new content is being released/updated every week, nothing stupid or drastic is being done. All the metric tools are saying we are "supposed" to do really good.
Now, while we are going down, our competitors have some fluctuation (+/-2 positions, but not anything close to what we are experiencing).
Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

I'd take a look at your content. Identify your most popular landing pages and look at the their bounce rates and time on page. Is the content delivering as promised? Has it earned any links? If not, consider deleting, retiring or updating the content with the goal of improving its engagement metrics.
I've experimented with this a bit and noticed improvement. Nothing scientific, but it's worth a try. Pick a couple to start and see what happens.
-
I'm so sad now
-
And this would be $1M question... even $1B.
As i said - it's core algo changes that's out of our control. I believe that top SEO experts (include Moz one's!) are trying to disassemble what's changed. So far there wasn't news that someone share it.
-
My question and worry why in the world it happened to "web design houston", for which we have been ranking in top 3 forever. And we haven't done any changes to pages recently.
-
However, if most of backlinks are nofollow, then it shouldn't be a problem, right?
And I attached the backlink comparison. There is a huge difference in do/no follow profiles between us and competitors. It can't be that 2% of backlink profile (and it's been like this for long time) all of the sudden made us drop 10 positions.
-
If they are nofollow, that eliminates the problem.
The ones that I looked at were... (1) keyword rich (2) site-wide (3) do-follow and (4) in the footer. Each of those 4 items are listed in Google's "Link Schemes" document that I linked to above.
-
Thanks everybody for responses.
Now, so what do I/we do? Is it just timely issue?
-
Would this be a problem if all those links are nofollow? Cause they are. Or at least 95%+ of them.
P.S. Also, if I compare our backlink profile to our competitors, they got 98%+ do follow backlink profile, from their clients footers mostly.

Hi Peter,
The same have happend to me.
I'm really concernd about some fluctuations that are drivign my clients crazyGR
-
Peter,
I have experienced the same.

Have seen it on alot of sites. The drop in rankings we are seeing is on less substantive sites generally.
Traffic signals are what we think has been impacted most plus some sort of sub domains/exact url impact. Not sure on the latter yet. We think the google update has upgraded how it is looking at traffic and how it interacts with the site. Where did it come from (did it enter via a search term), how long did it stay and what did it do next (did it share your content on social sites)?. Google seem to be giving maximum value to what we call High Domain Authority Referral Traffic. They seem to have upgraded their view of the quality of traffic being referred via backlinks.
The perfect backlink may now be one from a high Domain Authority site which refers traffic that stays on and interacts with your website.
We are getting ranking results via maximising the use of traffic signals. From maximising interaction and time on site to using traffic to turn previously dormant backlinks into ranking assets, there seems to be a range of ways to use these signals to generate ranking increases.
Anyway early days, but the fluctuations are absolutely there... we are seeing double dips and even double upswings, before it settles.
Hope that helps.

From the recently updated Google Quality Guidelines..... section on Link schemes.
- "Widely distributed links in the footers or templates of various sites"
In reference to these.
-
Same here... first goes up and now (this week) goes down. Probably they tweak something like fine-tuning algos.

Essential to Have a Blog to Rank Well?
I have noticed that several competitors that rank very well rarely update their blogs, www.42floors.com for instance. We are redesigning our commercial real estate Wordpress website in the hopes of improving traffic, ranking and conversions. How critical is it to invest resources on creating and categorizing blog posts? Is frequently updating a blog post less necessary in late 2018? Curious to hear how much effort we should take to create new blog content and whether or not it will assist us in a competitive niche. Thanks, Alan

A single page from site not ranking
Hello, We have a new site launched in March, that is ranking well in search for all of the pages, except one and we don't know why. This page it is optimised exactly the same way like the others, but still doesn't rank in Google. We have verified robots.txt for noffollow, noindex tags, we have verified if it was penalized by Google, but still didn't find nothing. Initially we had another site and was on the topic of this page, but we have redirected it to the new one. In case this old site was anytime in the past penalized by Google, could it be possible that the new page be influenced by this? Also, we have another site that ranks on the first position, that targets the same keywords like the page that does not rank. It was the first site we launched, so it is pretty much old, but we do not have duplicate content on them. Maybe Google doesn't like the fact that both target the same keywords and chooses to display only the old site? Please help us if you have any ideas or have been through such thing. Thank you!

Nice Domain Authority but Not Ranking
Hi, A client of mine who owns a website reached out to me. He got penalized a while ago and has long since recovered (not sure exactly, but for sure a year). His domain authority is in the upper 30s but is still not ranking for many of his keywords that he ranked on the first page. I am not so familiar with the technical aspects of penalties and such, but is this a common scenario? Why is his domain authority great but his ranking downright awful? Does he have a chance if he builds great links, or is something else wrong that we can't figure out?

Site rankings down
Our site is over 10 years old and has consistently ranked highly in google.co.uk for over 100 key phrases. Until the middle of April, we were 7th for 'nuts and bolts' and 5th for 'bolts and nuts' - we have been around these positions for 5-6 years easily now. Our rankings dropped mid-April, but now (presumably as a result of Penguin 2.0), we've seen larger decreases across the board. We are now 5th page on 'nuts and bolts', and second page on 'bolts and nuts'. Can anyone please shed any light on this? Although we'd fallen some before Penguin 2.0, we've fallen quite a bit further since. So I'm wondering if it's that. We do still rank well on our more specialised terms though - 'imperial bolts', 'bsw bolts', 'bsf bolts', we're still top 5. We've lost out with the more generic terms. In the past we did a bit of (relevant) blog commenting and obtained some business directory links, before realising the gain was tiny if at all. Are those likely to be the issue? I'm guessing so. It's hard to know which to get rid of though! Now, I use social media sparingly, just Facebook, Twitter and G+. The only linkbuilding I do now is by sending polite emails to people who run classic car clubs that would use our bolts, stuff like that. I've had a decent response from that, and a few have become customers directly. Here's our link profile if anyone would be kind enough as to have a look: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.thomassmithfasteners.com Also, SEOMOZ says we have too many links on our homepage (107) - the dropdown navigation is the culprit here. Should I simply get rid of the dropdown and take users to the categories? Any advice here would be appreciated before I make changes! If anyone wants to take a look at the site, the URL is in the link profile above - I'm terrified of posting links anywhere now! Thanks for your time, and I'd be very grateful for any advice. Best Regards, Stephen

Why do some domains out rank stronger authority domains
Hi, If we take the Moz stats into account here, how comes sometimes weak Moz stat domains out ranking strong Moz stat domains? For example: A inner page with DA56 / PA40 is outranking a Wikipedia inner page with DA100 / PA82. That's a massive difference basically twice as strong on the Wikipedia page but being out ranking. In this case I assume the onpage SEO is playing a big part, but can onpage optimisation be that powerful? And I see this all the time, what SEO factors cause this? Thanks.

How can we improve rankings for category pages
Hi Everyone, I have a dog breeder site I'm working on and I was wondering if I could get some tips and ideas on things to do to help the "category" pages rank better in search engines. Let's say I have "xyz" breed category page which has listings of all dog breeders who offer that particular breed, in this case "xyz". I have certain breeder profile listings which rank higher for those terms that the category page should be ranking for. So I'm guessing Google thinks those breeder profile pages are more relevant for those terms. Especially if well optimized. I know thin content may be my problem here, but one of our competitors dominates the rankings for relevant keywords with no content on their category pages. What do you all suggest?

How do we get individual products to rank ?
Hi, We have a site that sells music and we have been researching SEO and things we can do to help SERPs. We have started on link building and have added links to the footer of our page We have friendly urls, meta tag description added to all products. My question is, Yes we can work on getting keywords to rank better in google, one of ours being buy cds. But when it comes to individual products these keywords and results are useless if people are searching for a CD by artist or title which most do as they know what they are looking for. How do i get better results for all these unique products ? One or more of our competitors constantly show up in first few results for nearly any CD search by artist or title, yet we cant seem to get anywhere near this type of result ? Thanks Chris
