Tracing Performance of Individual Social Media Posts
-
Hello Moz community,
I have an Analytics question. Is there a way (using the social media APIs or otherwise) to track performance of individual social media posts to generate monthly reports?
We list lawyers on our directories for people to find. We also share the lawyer's information on our social media posts. I'd like to be able to generate a monthly report letting the lawyers know what we've done for them on social media pages.
I'm thinking....we can identify a social media post by the URL inside the text of the post (IF URL_Inside_Page =Lawyer-Profile-Page_URL Then). I'd like to see numbers like:
- Facebook post clicks (combined)
- Facebook post likes (combined)
- Facebook post views (combined)
- Twitter post views (combined)
- Twitter post clicks (combined)
Thank you

Thanks. I'll start using a URL shortener and see what kind of data I can get. The final solution might be a combination of social media management tool and a URL shortener. I'll have to play with something like sproutsocial and see if I can programatically generate social media performance for a sub-group of my posts (separating the reports for each lawyer in our system)
Thanks agian

Nima jan, just try it man it costs literally nothing to setup a branded shortener at bit.ly (well it costs you some kind of short format domain, this can be expensive if going for some of those 2 letter TLDs)
Once you try it and do a test, you will see what level of analytics bit.ly shows in free mode. They also have an enterprise mode with expanded analytics and some other bells and whistles, but I never tried it before.
I almost exclusively use a branded short domain for all my social media posts, not just stuff that goes to my own web properties, meaning if I am tweeting something about someone else's blog post, it will still go through my branded short domain, this is so I have basic clicks numbers on the actual link and for free information, I cannot complain about it.
Please keep in mind that likes and views are better tracked with social management suites. I like sproutsocial, but there are other ones and more capable ones out there too. That information comes from Facebook, so if it is something that Facebook does not provide (either directly or through API), nobody can provide.
You can get a free trial from sproutsocial and check it out, it is neato.

Hi sym_admin,
That's a really good idea. If I use a branded URL shortener, I can see how I can track link clicks. Can I also track likes and views and other social media metrics?

Ever heard of a custom branded url shortener? That is one idea I can think of for tracking some of this information in a reliable and less costly way, with some limitations. You can also always setup url paramters for it too, but that is more pain and money down the drain.
What I think you really need is the data provided here: https://www.facebook.com/help/336143376466063/
You could technically use tools that can present API data much better than the sources themselves can show in their reporting and using that you can generate a much more user friendly report. one example is sprout social.

Collecting post codes / zip codes in Google Analytics - Terms of Service
Hi Mozzers, Just reading up on Google Analytic's Terms of Service and wondering if collecting post codes / zip codes (from a website's 'Find my nearest...' tool) adhere's to the following: "You will not (and will not allow any third party to) use the Service to track, collect or upload any data that personally identifies an individual (such as a name, email address or billing information), or other data which can be reasonably linked to such information by Google." What do you think?

301 Redirect 'https'? First post - Newbie.
Good afternoon, Thank you in advance for your help - this is my first post and I am new to all of this. Situation: I've setup 301 redirects for www.thechiplab.com to my new site www.chiplab.com (recently launched e-commerce site on Magento) through cPanel. Problem: Some of my best links are to my old ''https:" www.thechiplab.com secure domain (ex. http://techcrunch.com/2006/12/22/why-doesnt-cafepress-use-flash/) and are not being "passed" on to the new domain. (Open Site Explorer) Is it possible to recover any of the PR from the old secure site? Thanks again, Chase

Posting on blog comments with anchor text on high ranked pages effective?
So i've identified some blogs which have a fairly high ranking and lots of traffic. They also allow anchor text in the name field. Does it make sense for me to comment on these blogs, or does google treat these with less authority that true page links? Any advice is greatly appreciated! TIA

Why do we temporarily rank for highly competitive words after writing a related blog post?
I write for a blog that Google probably "likes" at this point because we update so frequently and get a decent amount of traffic. Sometimes this happens and it has always been puzzling to me: Let's use an example. Say I write a blog called "How to eat spaghetti." For the next few days, we will get a ton of traffic for people who type "spaghetti." But when I check us on rank trackers we are nowhere to be found for that term. What is happening here? Sometimes the traffic will all be international and located in some random city in Africa or something. Any thoughts? Super confused by this. We have gotten lots of traffic for extremely competitive words because of this, but it only lasts a couple days.

Tracking Social Media Logged In Users Help
Hi, I recently read Tom Anthony's post on "Monitor Which Social Networks Your Visitors are Logged Into With Google Analytics". I have looked and re-looked at the code implemented and after two days I am still not getting any results tracking. Could somebody please take a look at my site and tell me if they see any conflicts or errors I may have made when installing the code. Thanks for any help!

Social Shares Metrics?
I notice in the OSE Link Metrics the reporting of Social Shares. The total shares do not include the Facebook Likes. What I'm wondering is what does this mean? Do Shares count more than Likes? Are Likes not counted by Google. What about LinkedIn Shares, why are they not being reported on? If Google is now putting more emphasis on Social where is the best use of effort? Getting Likes, Getting Shares only Twitter and Facebook and Google+?

Track Individual Organic Orders In Google Analytics
I was wondering if there is a way to track information about the individual order in google analytics. Currently I can see all of the organic traffic, rev, transactions, etc, but I would like to be able to know what those individual order numbers are, as well as be able to place test orders to see if organic tracking is correctly working. Does anyone know of a good blog walkthrough for this, or have any suggestions? Thanks (again individual organic order data not all data from a specific search engine or keyword).
