Domain Transition: Moving over paid traffic campaigns first
-
We're planning a domain name (rebrand) transition, and considering our options.
We rely heavily on paid traffic. To reduce risk, we’re considering moving AdWords and Bing Ads over campaign-by-campaign to the new domain first, while organic traffic continues to direct to the old domain. Each of our ad groups has a custom, noindex’d landing page. In order to serve paid traffic, we’d at minimum need a front page, and likely a privacy policy page in addition. Here’s a rough outline of what I think a transition like this might look like:
- Launch new domain with a simple front page, and privacy policy.
- Move over ppc landing pages on the new domain (noindex'd, robots.txt)
- Create new ads in existing ad groups directing to the new domain.
- Monitor ad groups for some time period to verify sustainability.
- Once we're satisfied with ppc performance, and planned the rest of the organic page migrations, 301 redirect everything to the new domain.
Is there any problems or things we should be concerned about with this approach? I'd think it should be fine, but I've been bitten enough from large-scale redirects in the past, that I know I should be nervous.

Hey,
I'm thinking about the basic things. First of all - Google won't take you seriously if you just have a couple of pages, which are new to his eyes, and with no links. More content (dofollow) will immediately mean that it sees you're trying to make an impact. + better chances of backlinks, shares. + better traffic since you have more pages. All of these would show Google that you're the real deal.
-
Thanks for the response. What exactly makes you think this strategy would affect the speed at which google indexes the new domain?
-
Hi,
well I think the answer quite shortly put is yes, it would affect the speed at which google would boost the new site as long as you're not uploading the content. If all of these are noindex the impact wouldn't probably be as big. Think of uploading the dofollow doindex content at least. That should be a good start.

Thanks. That video is definitely useful. Mostly stuff I already am aware of, but definitely a good refresher
I'm more concerned if a slow/partial transition of indexed pages to the new domain will have any aggregate negative affect over transitioning everything all at once.
Side note: our ppc landing pages are noindex'd because they're hyper customized for the keyword, and hyper optimized for conversion. They're basically include just a request form... only supporting content is to improve conversion rates. Which is often at odds with a page optimized for organic rankings.

Hey there,
I already posted this a few minutes ago but heck...it's just as helpful I guess. Rand just did a whiteboard Friday video about rel=canonical & redirect 3XX links which is right up your alley here.
I obviously can't explain it better than Rand, so have a look for yourself: https://moz.com/blog/rel-canonical
Cheers
Andy

Does having a lot traffic off branded search terms boost non-branded terms?
A site I work for has tons of organic traffic coming from branded terms like BRAND, www.brand.com, BRAND + Product, BRAND + question, etc. They also have a lot of non-branded terms, coming through. Overall a strong site. I've also seen websites for lawyers on TV with plenty of spammy links, almost no good ones, but nonetheless they rank well for their terms. My intuition says these are related, that the more people search for your brand, the more Google recognizes your authority relative to your keywords. Is this possible, or am I misguided?

The pros and cons of subdomain or new domain for a new brand?
Hi there Moz experts, We're launching a new brand and product offering for a completely different audience than we've worked with before. We're expected a significant amount of business to come from inbound marketing, so we're wondering whether we should launch the new brand as a subdomain of the parent company or as a completely separate domain. The parent company's website has thousands of inbound links and is over 10 years old, so I'm thinking in the short term it would be easier to get new content ranked there. However, in the long term I think it would be better for the new brand to have a separate TLD. Thoughts or other things I should consider? Thanks!

Drop In Branded Traffic
Hi, We took on a new client in March. Over the last few months I have noticed that their Branded Organic Traffic has dropped off considerably, around 20%. On further investigation I discovered that the drop off occurred between Jan & Feb this year (prior to us taking over). In Jan they launched a new site, the drop off seems to coincide with the launch of their new website. I also found out that their Page Rank had disappeared before the launch of the new website, and is still a PR/na. My first thought was that they have been penalised. How likely is this on a very well known site which gets roughly 170K visits per month? Could the drop in Branded Traffic be due to a decrease in advertising budget elsewhere (to compensate for the cost of the new website, leading to less brand exposure)? Could it be that there are just fewer people searching for their Brand? I guess the questions I am trying to find out are: 1. What are the reasons for massive drops in Branded organic traffic? 2. As an seo I am tasked mainly for optimising for non-branded organic traffic, is there anything I can suggest to the client to help get this traffic back? 3. If it is an algorithmic penalty (Panda, Penguin), how do I know which one? I have started with their links and disavowed known toxic links, fixed crawl errors, optimised their top pages etc etc. If it was a penalty and I mange to fix it, will their branded traffic return? Any help with the above would be greatly appreciated. Jon

Organic Traffic from irrelevant keywords in GA?
Hi, I am doing SEO for a website that deals in 4-wheeler tyres. While reviewing the organic traffic in Google Analytics, i noticed some keywords that are completely irrelevant to the theme of the website. Some are porn related terms while some are like google, yahoo, laptops, youtube etc. It seems someone is doing negative SEO for my website, as a result of which a decent number of searches are coming from these irrelevant terms. What should i do to block traffic from such terms as this may harm my website's performance in search engines. Please suggest a solution as soon as possible.

How do I improve the ranking of a site, which already receives huge volumes of traffic?
I have taken over the SEO campaign for one of our largest clients. They already receive over a million visits a year due to the brand itself. However, I'd like to start targeting some new search terms to diversify the incoming visitors. Any advice on this type of situation, beyond traditional SEO best practices? Thanks in advance!

Register a Domain: Brand Name VS Product Name
Hi All, Since Google give more priority to brand names and most of the penalized websites by Google's Penguin update are websites which had links with promoted keywords, is it a good idea to register a new domain by the product name (ex: www.leatherbags.com) ?. Or is it good to register the domain by the company or brand name and then build a reputable brand first before targeting product based keywords (ex: leather bags) ?.

A forum on your primary domain name (implications)
Hi there What are the pitfalls of putting a forum on an already busy ecommerce website from an SEO perspective?
Branding | | bfrl
I wouldn't use a sub domain, I would add the forum on the primary domain in an attempt to help build my inbound link portfolio. Some pro's and cons that come to mind... Pros - Lots of (hopefully) great user generated and relevant content - Lots of potential landing pages off the back of the above Targeted community Cons - Dealing with potential negative forum posts Constant moderation Possible issues with potentially 1000's of (what Google may consider) low quality pages on a domain name / site which currently fairs well in the SERPs The last con would be my primary concern.
Anyone have any experiences with this? Or any advice at all. Many thanks0
