Checking subdomains/ site structure of a website for International SEO

Dear Moz community,
I am looking into two websites for a friend and we want to understand the following:
What is the site structure as per the sub domains?
e.g currently it is .com/en/ or .com/ru/ or .com/zh/
Using the crawl report, each page has a en or other language version. I take it this means that we have to create copy, meta titles and descriptions for each of the languages even if the page is the same but in a different language? To avoid duplication of content would you suggest canonical tags to be put in place?
To check hreflang mark up, I couldn't find anything in the code which makes me thing a script is automatically translating this?
This is the first time I have started to look at international SEO and want to understand what to look for in an audit of exisiting sites.

From my research it is best practice not to use the whole: .com/en/ .com/ru/ style of denoting languages, is this correct? Well I, not I agree with that as long as you set up correctly the language, sitemaps, canonicals and so on you should not have any problem I will give you 2 good examples
If you notice both of them use subfolders for language and region
Based on my experience I avoid creating subdomains because basically, prefer to build authority for a single domain rather than build authority for several subdomains. Both strategies have pros and cons and all depend on the size of the project. I mean a big brand can choose subdomain even when is going to manage several link building campaigns for several subdomains (keep in mind that Google will treat every subdomain as a single independent website).
In my case I build authority for the main version of my website www.mycorporatewebsite.com --> English version andwhen I need to launch the Spanish version, this is going to rank a little bit easier mainly for DA that I already built
In your case, if you selected a subdomain as your option no matter the reason, this can be technical reasons or maybe it was a client requirement (Russian and China). Well, the steps to follow are these ones.
- create the subdomains
- migrate the content
- redirect the old pages (not delete)
- submit the new sitemaps to GSC
I will strongly suggest you make the process as much gradually as you can to not hurt your main website
- build a map of all of your internal pages
- divide it into small categories/tags/taxonomies or whatever you want
- migrate this small pieces gradually

All is clear and you've explained and answered my questions very well.
From my research it is best practice not to use the whole: .com/en/ .com/ru/ style of denoting languages, is this correct? Because essentially, the way I see it, the content is the same in all languages and is autotranslated, I believe from the geographical location of the user.
Would you suggest creating subdomains with hreflang mark up on each page. e.g

create subdomain
-
publish content and pages
-
Delete old language subfolders and redirect to the new pages?
As I want to target location and not just language.
I want to rank in both Russia and China and this is my first attempt looking at a site that is trying to do so.

First, of all, you need to understand the difference between a subdomain and subfolder so
- cars-movie.disney.com ---> this is subdomain
- disney.com/cars-movie ---> this is a folder, subfolder, internal page or whatever you prefer
As I see in this case we are talking about
- language subfolders
- international SEO
So answering your questions

Also, you need to keep in mind create a sitemap for each language, set up the canonical tag and language tag for each page.

Well, all depends on the platform or cms of the websites, in WordPress, there are several plugins which will help you a lot such as WPML or Polylang.

How to approach SEO for a business with three distinct focus areas
I have a client who has asked for the development and optimisation of three websites for a business located at one address. They offer specialised skin care, have a make-up artistry division and also a luxury portraiture/photographic service offered to clients. International Sites
Hi Guys Just wanting to get some feedback on best practices for international website. The main website is a .co.uk there looking to target France & Belgium. The web hosting is UK based. Do we replicate the UK site and translate to local language but use a .fr domain and have 3 versions of the websites on 3 separate domains? or do just use the co.uk with french & Belgium translation have pages related to those countries? Duplicate Content - Local SEO - 250 Locations
Hey everyone, I'm currently working with a client that has 250 locations across the United States. Each location has its own website and each website has the same 10 service pages. All with identical content (the same 500-750 words) with the exception of unique meta-data and NAP which has each respective location's name, city, state, etc. I'm unsure how duplicate content works at the local level. I understand that there is no penalty for duplicate content, rather, any negative side-effects are because search engines don't know which page to serve, if there are duplicates. So here's my question: If someone searches for my client's services in Miami, and my client only as one location in that city, does duplicate content matter? Because that location isn't competing against any of my client's other locations locally, so search engines shouldn't be confused by which page to serve, correct? Of course, in other cities, like Phoenix, where they have 5 locations, then I'm sure the duplicate content is negatively affecting all 5 locations. I really appreciate any insight! Thank you,

Yoast Local SEO Reviews/Would it work for me?
Hi everyone, I'm looking for some feedback on Yoast Local SEO, and if you think it'd work for our site. www.kempruge.com. Our site is a wordpress site, and there's nothing about it, off the top of my head, that makes me think it wouldn't work, but I've been wrong before. We do use All-In-One SEO, not the Yoast plugin, so I'm not sure if that's compatible.or would cause a problem? (The reason we use All-In-One and not Yoast is because that's what we had when I got here, and I'm worried what would happen if we switched). Also, we have three offices, and I need to be able to do local seo for all three. I know Yoast says it supports multiple offices, but I'd feel more comfortable if someone on here let me know from his/her experience that it did. Having portal page that takes you to website with a different url
We are in the planning stages for this. Our client wants his (as yet) domain name to be a portal page for this new campaign. His domain name is a non-keyword company name (i.e. widgetsgalore.com) We already have a website with content tailored to his business ready to go. In fact, we did a campaign back in '06 to '09 that was highly successful. At that time it was just the webpage with a keyword rich url. Now for some reason the client wants his company name url (widgetsgalore.com) to be the portal page (landing page) that once potential clients click on it takes them to the website with the content. What are the pros and cons of doing what client asks about making his widgetsgalore.com a portal page vs. going directly to the url with all the content/forms, etc? This is a local site, with audience limited to southern california.
