Proper SEO structure for Franchise/ Franchisee websites
-
Hi Neighbors,
Franchise website design and development can be difficult, there’s no doubt about it. I had to find the right balance between a unique and unified brand identity, and a localized experience that accurately reflects the individual franchisees and their efforts.
Due to the many benefits, I have structured the to read _domain.com/location _
- domain.com = TLD
- /location = subfolder (location page)
I have also built a customized CMS (e.g. Drupal) and have given each location access to manage their location page (subfolder). To accommodate local SEO optimization, franchisees have complete control in terms of optimizing their location page (subfolder). Title tags, meta description, Alt tags, etc...
Will any local optimization performed in the subfolder (location page) be stiffened because it was not done in the TLD but in the subfolder ?

Thank you very much everyone for your answers. They were very insightful. Took away a couple things that I did not implement.
This biggest thing I need to completely understand is:
If there are any SEO practices implemented in the franchisees page
Ex: website.com/west-palm-beach
any efforts are not stiffened because the SEO was not implemented on website.com but was instead implemented in /west-palm-beach (subfolder)

Hi there,
I recommend that you put together some form of a style guide as to how a franchise should use their spot in the website - a what how & why they need to update their pages.
You could also apply a GMB account to each location, the sum of everyone's efforts will help in local SEO, if everyones doing things right.

Hi
Am not sure I would grant access to Franchisee's. It is likely you could get a better outcome by managing yourself. A lack of uniformity in messaging, uploading images without compressing etc. could lead to issues.. I am a bit of a control freak..
The other element to focus on is google my business. That should enhance local foot traffic.
Hope that helps.

Hello Jeffvertus,
I think you've chosen a good URL structure. The only additional advice I would give is to consider putting all of those within another directory called /locations/ so they aren't all off the root. This has many advantages when it comes to traffic analysis, SEO analysis and reporting, as you can easily limit whatever you're looking at into location specific or non-location specific data.
Subdomains would have been much harder to manage, although there isn't a whole lot of difference with regard to SEO, if we're to believe what Google tells us.

Getting the Proper CCTLDs & Subdomains to Rank in the Proper Countries
We seem to be having a really difficult time getting Google to do what we want in regards to getting proper domains indexed in the proper countries. In regards to English language, we tend to see a tremendous amount of crossover between .com, .in, and .co.uk. And yes international targeting is put in place. For example, both our .com and co.uk websites are in english and when someone enters a search query for one of our particular products, the .com website shows up to users in the UK. The countries with the hardest time are as follows and typically find them competing primarily with .com, but others can interlope as well. **All primarily in English: ** Canada UK India Australia Any ideas on how we can get this aligned correctly to where we can get the proper CCTLD to show up in the correct country instead of the .com?

Local SEO In A Different Language
I am pretty new to web design and SEO, so I am sure I have completely done this wrong. I work for a U.S. based equipment dealer and before I started working here my company incorporated in Canada under "(our main product) of Canada". Even before we had any SEO work done on our website, we ranked in the top 3 across Canada for our main product. The one exception to this was Quebec where we rarely got any traffic due to the language barrier. We started working to fix this last summer using the Montreal Consulate, our SEO company at the time and a translator. They each gave me the same French translation of our Company name and I had them translate the 8 most visited pages on our existing site. I then created a replica of our existing site, hosted it on the French translation of our name and started running inbound links to this site from our U.S. and Canada sites. The first thing I am wondering is if there's any issue with this practice? We have had good results so far and traffic from Quebec is way up across our three sites. The second issue I have is we just hired our first employee in Quebec and found a partner there. They are both adamant that the translation we are using is incorrect. I own the domain for the correct translation they are suggesting but I have no idea how to go about it. Any suggestions?

Listing bundle info on site and on local SEO page.
We just finished a new telecom site, and like all telecom sites (think AT&T, Verizon, Suddenlink, etc.), we allow people to put their location in and find internet and phone service packages (what we call bundles) unique to their area. This page also has contact information for the local sales team and some unique content. However, we're about to start putting up smaller, satellite pages for our local SEO initiative. Of course, these pages will have unique content as well, but it will have some of the same content as what's on the individual bundle page, such as package offerings, NAP, etc. Currently this is the URL structure for the bundles: domain.com/bundles/town-name/ This is what I'm planning for the local SEO pages: domain.com/location/town-name-state/ All local FB pages, Google listings, etc. will like to these location pages, rather than the bundle pages. Is this okay or should I consolidate them into one?

Hello Moz Community, We have been working with a company called Provincial Movers to optimize their website. We are focusing our efforts on building external local & relevant citations, however, I can't help but think there is more we can do internally --> www.provincialmoving.com The previous provider created a LOT of articles that are not necessarily relevant to the website like this: http://www.provincialmoving.com/blogs/ Do you guys have any suggestions for cleaning up the website so it performs better on Google? Thanks, Anton

Does the Location of my Server effect my SEO?
Does the geographic Location of my Server effect my SEO? HELP US! We are arguing for 3 weeks already. My partner has mentioned multiple times in the past that "since 2013 google does not require your server to be in the country you are targeting for seo"
Local Website Optimization | | DanielBernhardt
And that actually all they care about is if its a good and fast server - not where its physically located in the world. I am a strong believer that the geographic location of your server directly effects your SEO ranking... lets say if you want to target www.google.ru for your seo, best you have a server located in Russia for hosting your website.. WHO IS RIGHT? Choose the winner and base the facts.
If anybody has the correct answer and information to base it on it will help us alot - and maybe even spare some unnecessary violent between us two! we found some articles across the web, sadly they are all dated back to 2012.... Thanks in Advance for all the help guys!0 -
