Increase in Direct Traffic plus Bounce Rate rise for all traffic sources
-
Hello,
I work for an agency and we have seen a big rise in bounce rate for 4 of our clients which happened on the exact same day. This rise on bounce rate is across all traffic sources.
We are also seeing a big increase in direct traffic, starting on the same day. Is it possible for bot traffic to affect the bounce rate of all other traffic sources?
We have ruled out double reporting in GA but can explain how the bounce rate has increased for all traffic sources. How is this linked to the rise in direct traffic (in some cases as high as 500%)?
Thanks

@jenallen A sudden increase in bounce rate and direct traffic may indicate bot traffic affecting analytics. Bots visit websites, imitate human behavior, and inflate metrics. They generate traffic, simulate user sessions with one-page views, and have quick exits, causing a high bounce rate. Bots manipulate referral sources, making traffic appear direct. Bot traffic distorts overall analytics data, affecting metrics. To investigate and address the issue:
-
Filter known bot traffic: Use a tool to exclude bots from analytics for accurate data.
-
Analyze user engagement metrics: Check the time on page, pages per session, and conversion rates for anomalies.
-
IP analysis: Examine IP addresses to detect suspicious patterns suggesting bot activity.
-
Implement bot detection measures: Enhance website security with CAPTCHA, bot detection scripts, or IP blocking.
By taking these steps, you can understand and mitigate the impact of bot traffic on analytics data.

@jenallen Hi, I wouldn't worry too much if these traffic and bounce rate spikes are temporary, as there can be dozens of potential causes. However, in my own experience a possible explanation when bounce rate increases dramatically for all traffic channels while there is a huge increase in traffic, is that such a traffic spike causes an overload of the server, thus slowing the website or causing errors. Therefore, users leave the website before pages load, increasing bounce rate for everyone.

@jenallen we are also experiencing the same issue. It happened Feb 4. Our site had a spike of direct traffic.

Unsolved Capturing Source Dynamically for UTM Parameters
Does anyone have a tutorial on how to dynamically capture the referring source to be populated in UTM parameters for Google Analytics? We want to syndicate content and be able to see all of the websites that provided referral traffic for this specific objective. We want to set a specific utm_medium and utm_campaign but have the utm_source be dynamic and capture the referring website. If we set a permanent utm_source, it would appear the same for all incoming traffic. Thanks in advance!

Disabling Hubspot AMP plugin - impact on GA
Hello, all!
Reporting & Analytics | | SimpleSearch
What impact have you seen if you've used the Hubspot AMP plugin and then disabled it?
We saw a big jump in sessions, which is weird because GA was tracking AMP pages. I'm trying to wrap my head around why this is happening but my brain isn't working 🙂0 -
Since implementing GDPR, has anyone seen website traffic plummet?
On December 1 and 2, I implemented a cookie banner on 5 of my Wix sites (https://www.sanitationsolutionsinc.com is one example) in order to be in compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and LGPD. Since then my traffic according to Wix Analytics and Google Analytics has plummeted. Anyone else have the same issue? How did you fix it?

Whats (Other) traffic in Google Analytics?
When I look through all our clients, a few are receiving the majority of their traffic from (other). [ Acquisition > Channels > (Other) ]. The only option in (other) is "website" or "offline", whatever that may be. And even weirder, the avg session duration is 0:00. Any idea what this may be?

Referral Traffic Issue
I'm working on a site that has low traffic volumes due to its niche. That's fine but we are daily getting referral traffic from unrelated domains without a link. These visits are always 100% bounce which is impacting the overall click.through rate. The domains are not the same and different ones come through all the time, so it is difficult to keep on top of. Any ideas what could be going on here and an effective way of dealing with this?

Conversion Rate Higher Than Landing Page Visits?
Interesting to see in Google Analytics that the conversion rate is higher than landing page visits - could it be attributed to a visitor clicking the CTA button multiple times? Or perhaps there is duplicate GA code on the conversion page since we utilize both Google Analytics and HubSpot. (see attached funnel screenshot) Screen-Shot-2014-09-26-at-10.49.09-AM.png

Google Analytics: How to Track Blog Traffic that Enter the Purchase Funnel?
I've been trying to figure this out for awhile, but I have had no luck. The current ecommerce store that I work for is trying to find out how to track how many people coming in via the blog are converting/buying. The site lives on Magento and the blog is on wordpress and they both use the same Google Analytics code. Site URL: http://website.com/ Blog URL: http://website.com/blog Is there anyway to do this so you can see which landing pages are driving conversions? If not, Is it possible to set up Google Analytics to show conversions and revenue coming from people who enter through blog directory?
