Bounce Rate Question - The percent calculated does not add up
-
Hello All,
I'm attempting to see why organic search bounce rate has increased by 5% when compared to last year for a certain section of my website. I am using a custom segment to filter the specific pages I want to look at. Once the custom segment is set, I go to Acquisition - > Channels - > Organic. Then, I click the Landing Pages tab. Because we don't have keyword data anymore the only thing I can look at is the landing pages that contributed to the change in bounce. Finally, I set my date range and compare to the same date range as last year. Once I set the date range I am presented with a list of URLs and the percent change in bounce rate for each URL. This is where I get confused. If you look at the average bounce rate at the top of the column (example 1 attached) it does not add up with the data below it. If you export all of the data to excel, and then do an "Average" function in Excel, the data adds up to 17.29% instead of 35.04% for Sept. 2013. Why does this not add up? Isn't GA calculating the Average?
Also, I always notice several URLs with only 1 session per URL. Several of these 1 session URLs have a 100% bounce rate. Since the bounce rate at the top of the column (example1) is a reflection of the average bounce rate, wouldn't these 1 session URLs significantly distort my data?
I ultimately just want to see the pages that are contributing to the increased bounce rate when compared to last year. Having a hard time figuring this one out.
Thank you all,
Dave

Andy, Thank you so much. I had a feeling I was making this out to be something much harder than it actually was. Of course you can't average percentages. That explains everything. Thank you!

If I am reading the question correctly, then its more of a maths questions rather than an SEO question.
You simply can't average % as some figures have more weighting than others, pages with more page views will have a higher weighting to the total average %, than the pages with 1 page view and 100% bounce rate. So simply using the average formula in Excel wouldn't take into account the weighting and assume they all have equal weighting (which unless ever page had the exact same number of page views, isn't the case).
Here is probably a better explanation: http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_6437936_calculate-averages-percentages.html
Hope this is useful.
Thanks
Andy

What's Causing My Extremely Low Bounce Rate
My client's site that is reporting an under 10% bounce rate for all sources. Direct is the highest at 8%. I'm no expert in GA but wondering if there is a problem with the analytics/tag manager code on the site. I'm especially concerned about the GTM body script being in an iframe which I read could be trouble. <!-- Google Tag Manager (noscript) -->

Regular Expression Question
We are having a little trouble coming up with a goal that shows how many product pageviews we are getting but I need to exclude search results pageviews that (unfortunately) have the same URL structure. Because it's an outside CMS, we have not ability to change the URL architecture. Products are on these types of pages: https://porscheasheville.com/inventory/Porsche+Boxster+Asheville+North+Carolina+2016+Rhodium+Silver+Metallic+536911 https://porscheasheville.com/inventory/Audi+A4+2.0T+Premium+Plus+Asheville+North+Carolina+2015+Gray+638379 Search results pages have this URL structure: https://porscheasheville.com/inventory/new/ https://porscheasheville.com/inventory/?condition=new&make=Porsche&model=Boxster https://porscheasheville.com/inventory/used/ https://porscheasheville.com/inventory/?condition=used&model=A4+2.0T+Premium+Plus I am hoping to create a GA goal with regular expressions showing only the product pages and not allowing the search results pages show up. Here's what I have, it's not working - any regex experts out there who can help? /inventory/[new/][used/] Thanks as always MOZ friends!

What is The Bounce Rate of Single Page Website?
Hi All, I just want to clear some of my confusion regarding bounce rate. Bounce rate depends upon time. If yes than how? What will be the bounce rate for single page website. Single page website will have same bounce rate and exit rate?

High bounce rate on affiliate portal
Hi everyone, I own several affiliate websites and i have a really high bounce percentage(61%) and a high exit rate(78,45%). But i don't know the exact meaning of both words: At the homepage of my website people have the possibility to directly click on several banners, so they then going to another website via the affiliate-link, lots of people click these links. So i was wondering is this the reason why my exit rate en high bounce percentage is that high, or could it have another reason? Thank you,

Bounce rates plummeted
In Google Analytics, my average bounce rates plummeted basically overnight. I went from a consistent average daily bounce rate of about 65% to an average daily bounce rate near 5%. My average number of visitors has stayed the same. I don't think there is any significant change I made to my site that may have caused this. Has anyone else had the same problem and know why it happened and how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Will javascript generated links affect my bounce rate?
Hi all, I run a site called Applicable Jobs (http://www.applicablejobs.com) and from analyising my analytics I notice my bounce rate is unusually high at around 85%. I'm keen to get this right down as I've read recently that a high bounce rate is a metric Google uses in determining positioning in the SERPs. I honestly don't think it's the quality of my content because I feel it's genuinely useful to my target audience but I'm wondering if the way my jobs list is generated is causing an issue. At the moment I have my jobs listings generated through javascript so I can have nice effects and use a bit of ajax but if Google crawls it, it obviously won't be able to see the listings. So I'm wondering if when a user comes to the site and they click on one of the job listings, does the Google analytics code recognise that click because that link is generated through javascript? Thanks

Bounce Rate
Howdy Mozzers Does anyone know if the 'average time on site' in Google analytics is calculated with bounce rate included? For example if you have a 50% bounce rate and your average time on site is 2 minutes the actual time would be 4 minutes as the 50% bounce rate time is classed as 0. I hope that is clear! Cheers
