Setting Up Title Tags for Multipe Locations and Products
-
Hi There!
So we operate a small offset postcard printing company in Houston. While we are based out of Houston, we market and work with a lot the larger cities around us. So for example Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio are nice sized markets for us. So my question is if i whats the most effective way to structure the title data to market to those areas. Lets take 4 X 6 Postcards at the moment the website loos like
Austin 4 X 6 Postcard Printing, Full Color Postcard Prints - nameofcompany.com
Each page will have unique content for lets say from the Dallas 4 X 6 Postcard page

I would do some keyword research to find out how people looking for your printing services are searching. Are they typing the city first? I don't know. I know from my own searching that when I'm looking for a local business or service I usually tag the city on the end...but that's just me. For example if I'm looking for a new Dentist, I would type "dentist olympia wa"
But don't trust my searching habits, do a little keyword research to find out which combination wins out in search volume. Good luck!

Thanks for the follow up. Got another similar question. For the index page we have always put the same of the city before everything else so at the moment its
Houston Printing | Direct Mail Marketing | Postcard Printing, EDDM Printing Would you suggest that we put it towards the end? Also let me your opinion of the title tag structure? Thanks for all your help! CC

The title tag is a little long, like Dana suggest, but that's how I'd break it down. I'd also incorporate keyword rich internal links between all of those pages.

This isn't really an answer about the structure of the title tags. It's more of an observation and comment. If your current title tag is this: Austin 4 X 6 Postcard Printing, Full Color Postcard Prints - nameofcompany.com, unless your company name is zero characters, your titles aren't fully displaying in Google. Google truncates, or in some cases completely replaces title tags that are over 60 characters.
That being said, my suggestion would be to make it: 4 X 6 Full Color Postcard Printing | Austin Texas
This makes the city clearly a "city" and not the name of a design choice for a postcard.
Just my thoughts. Hope that helps a little!

The Yoast plugin is installed on the website. It generates the following meta property tag when I enter a new title-tag in the plugin: Next to that I have my standard title-tag. <title>dummy</title> Is this meta property tag able to replace the title-tag? Thanks!

Product Colour Variation and Canonicals
Hi there, We are currently doing an SEO audit of an ecommerce website and we ar eunsure on the best practice in terms of using canonical link tag for some product variations. An example is that the company has a product with two colour variations: Black and Tan. These are for the same product and have 99% the same content. Within the content of the page the colour is the only thing that changes (along with the meta information and imagery of course). My question is should we choose one product and canonically link back to that one i.e. Black is the main product and we link Tan back to this via a canonical link? Many thanks in advance.

Should product variations be visible individually?
I can't find any information on this anywhere. We have hundreds of configurable products, all with coloured variations. For example, one of our popular selling chairs comes in 8 different colours. Now, should all these coloured variations be visible individually (and have their own url) or only visible when selected from the dropdown? The problem is, when they have their own url it's going to cause duplicate content issues. It's merely impossible to write a different brief for the same product in 8 different colours. The second issue is, if they are visible individually, one colour is going to be shown TWICE to users, one being the simple product and one being the main configurable. I hope you kind people can help!

How many product subcategories are ok?
Let's say I have a sea glass ankle bracelet. On my site, my main keyword is "Sea Glass Jewelry" and have ranked relatively well for this, but this main page has over 200 products in it. I thought that if the URL has the keywords in it, it would be beneficial. I also have a section for all my bracelets, so it would be there and then, a more specific ankle bracelets category. So, technically, an ankle bracelet will show up 3x. Sea Glass Jewelry (all products go here) Bracelets (all bracelets go here) Ankle Bracelets (only ankle bracelets) The URL is only attached to the main category so to speak. If you click the ankle bracelets category, the url will still revert back to the original main category: seaglassjewelry/sterlinganklebracelet so I don't believe there is duplicate content. I have had my domain for years and it has ranked well until someone hacked into my site 2 years back. I have never been able to recover from this loss. Since then, I have tried to optimize my site, but nothing seems to be working and I just want to make sure that I am not hurting my ranking by doing this. Can someone confirm this is the best way to do it or make a suggestion? Thank you.

Should I watermark my product images
I am in the process of creating new images for my products to use on my website. Are there any advantages or disadvantages of watermarking each image? Is there an SEO impact good or bad? I am aware that filename and Alt tags are important, but am unsure if google dislikes watermarked images.

My company's product is referred to by two different names (SVN and Subversion). When cleaning up our Title tags, is it OK to use either name to keep the title tags around 70 characters?
I am cleaning up title tags that are too long or not correct. In our title tag we reference our product (a version of OSS source code). This product is often referred to as both SVN or Subversion. When writing Title tags is it OK to use one or the other depending on the length of the Title Tag? For instance: Contact Us | Free SVN & Git Hosting | Bug & Issue tracking | CloudForge vs **About CloudForge | Free Subversion & Git Hosting | Bug Tracking ** | |

How to add canonical tag
Hi, I read through many of the forum questions dealing with the overly dynamic URLS and I think I understand. Please let me know if I know what I am talking about: If SEO moz is saying I have 20 pages (mostly search and home/index pages) with overly dynamic urls, I would go to the that particular page and add the following code between the head tag: This code would cause Google to go to this page instead of the following duplicate index pages: 1. http://www.about-sports-collectibles.com/index.php?pcsid=0a83aa7119cf3d80a1d018634ec4ec94&p 2. http://www.about-sports-collectibles.com/index.php?pcsid=18b220fc62628b013a51c6f26209df50&p There are a total of about 8 of these index pages. The problem is that I can't figure out where I would access each of these duplicate pages to add the canonical tag. There is only one home page with coding. As far as the search pages are concerned, I would not want Google to follow those pages would I? If that is the case, what would be the best code to add between the tags? For instance here are a couple of the overly-dynamic URL pages for the search pages: 1. http://www.about-sports-collectibles.com/index.php?p=catalog&mode=search&search_in=all&search_str= 2. http://www.about-sports-collectibles.com/index.php?pcsid=50354d5791e627dc2be6c86528154a5e&p=catalog&mode=search I hope I am not overwhelming anyone with my questions. I really am trying to get a handle on how Ll this stuff works. Thanks so much the help. Don

Finding unique title tags for each media coverage page
We have multiple pages for our media coverage, and each page has the same title tag. I know it's important to have unique title tags, but if each page is just a listing of your media coverage (page 1 of 9, page 2 of 9, etc) then how do you create unique title tags for each media coverage page?
