Confused of Choosing www or non-www domain
-
Hi All,
I went through the Whiteboard friday: http://moz.com/blog/top-5-seo-questions-from-customers-whiteboard-friday But still need clarification. One of the site that we manage is http://jaihindkalari.com/ ,
1. When we do Google search www.jaihindkalari.com will come up
2. Not yet redirected from non-www to www
3. All internal links are non-www
4. Google cached non-www
5. page authority ghigh for non-www
Do i need to 301 redirect from non-www to www
-
Hi there! I recommend redirecting the www version to the non www version, as you already have your internal links set as the latter, Google has cached this version, it has high authority, etc. You should also set the non www version as the canonical website in Google WMT. Best of luck!

Hi Anand, yes you will need to resolve the duplicate url issues. As an extra resource that you may find useful heres a Q&A article from Matt Cutts blog. One of the more interesting responses for your case is that you can just set your webserver to have the non www. version as the default, this helps tell (all) search engines what your prefered format will be and redirects users.

Hi Anand
Yes it looks like you have both versions, the non www and the ww version so could potentially be perceived as duplicate content (2 websites)
You need to choose 1 version and stick with it, so if you would prefer to have the www version then yes 301 the non www version to the www version (or vice versa)
Also for your info you have too many characters in your home page title tag @ 89 characters when you should keep under 70 characters.
Also reduce characters in your meta description tag since currently 189 when you want to be under 155
Hope that helps
All Best
Dan

Domain Change Post Mortem
Hello, my company changed our domain 2 weeks ago and we are just starting to see traffic level back out, except for Organic. The site is on shopify so it made switching the domain pretty easy, as well as the 301 redirects (no url structure changes). We've taken all the proper steps with google/bing webmaster tools as well as monitoring 404's and 301 testing and don't see any red flags. Does anyone roughly know how long it takes for 301's to re-index and domain authority to start building back up for our new domain? Our old domain was about 13 years old and the new one was parked for quite awhile. p.s. I also noticed a lot of our traffic ending up as referral from our old url. I was able to wipe the sessions from analytics which cut it down, but will this persist for the foreseeable future? Thanks!

Steady Decline in Domain Authority since December 2014
We have a site that was at a 32 domain authority in December, and our competition as usually been about a point or two behind us. But since December, we have fallen a point or two after each index and are now at the point of 26 and our competition is up to a 33. The competition did fall a point or two but were able to regain what they lost. We publish original content blogs over 600 words per blog targeted at our audience twice a week and post to all of our social media channels and have guest blogged linking back to our site. We also updated the look of our site to be mobile responsive to comply with Google's mobile indexing. I did find some spam feed burners linking to our site over 4,000 times and have since disavowed those links. Has anyone experienced a decline in domain authority in the past few months and have you been able to turn it back around? Is there something that we should look at fixing or something we are missing that could help bring our numbers back up?

Exact match domains DOMINTATING the serps
For longer tail keywords with typical local monthly search volume of 50 or so, there are exact match domains that are just killing it. Take for instance "alabama registered agent", I'm showing www.alabamaregisteredagent.com in the first spot ahead of the state department, etc. This site has zero links in OSE (DA and PA 1) and is a very small site in general. Can anyone explain why this domain is doing so well?

Will 301 redirects (Same Domain) show as referral traffic in Analytics?
For an eCommerce site we have 301'd legacy product pages to new product pages. Is all that traffic going to show up as referral traffic from our own domain in Google Analytics? If so, is there any way to preserve original source/medium info or will all the source/medium info be our own domain since there is a 301 redirect?

Cross Domain Tracking
I want to track across domains, but also track as a virtual pageview anytime someone clicks on the link to another domain. So currently I have, for example: Checkout Now! As per Google's instructions, I need to have the link set to: Checkout Now! But this will obviously get rid of my virtual pageview. Is there a way I can do both?

Spike in 404 Errors from a redirecting domain
All, The non www version of a site I own redirects to the www version. Recently, WMT began showing a big spike in 404 errors (1,000+) on the non www version of the site. Site traffic is off about 15% since the spike in 404 errors. There was also a brief period about two weeks ago, where the site went down due to an issue with the code that has now been resolved. Any ideas how WMT is showing 404 errors on redirected pages? Thanks, John
