Keyword Research Competition
-
Hello everyone. Was talking to my "competition" the other day and they mentioned the amount of traffic they are getting from google. It's double what I currently am receiving. I feel like I am not targeting the correct keywords. What is the best way to research competitions keywords? Anyway to find out what is driving traffic their direction?
-
I love Keri's response. Traffic isn't everything, just like rank isn't. My recommendation would be not to think about whether or not you're targeting the right keywords, but whether you're targeting customers. What can you put on your website to attract them? Hint: it's not keywords. Keep focused on giving them what they want. The traffic will happen naturally. And so will the keywords if you keep your focus in the right place.

Are they making double the money you are? Like Tony said, the type of keywords matter a lot.
I get traffic for Bismarck waterjet from people in North Dakota looking for a waterjet cutter, but what they find is a page on my site that talks about using a waterjet cutter for the DKM Bismarck warship model. That's traffic my competitor isn't getting, as he doesn't mention waterjet on his page, but that traffic isn't doing me any good.

Hi Jason,
For competitive analysis I'd start with SEMrush. It shows a ton of data, including keyword terms that are driving traffic to their website (and yours) plus which pages rank for which terms.
However, not receiving as much traffic as your competition depends on a number of things:
-
Carrying out extensive keyword research for terms that are appropriate for your business, not your competitors - ensure you check "exact match" terms..
-
Analysing your content - is it "thin" and not worthy of being presented by Google as a worthwhile "subject-matter-expertise" piece? If your pages stood on their own, could they be used as proof of authority?
-
The overall quality of inbound links to your site - check OpenSiteExplorer / MagesticSEO / AHRefs to compare yours to theirs
-
Are they more active on social (greater reach) or have more online mentions (engagement)
-
Is Analyse your top page views and landing page stats in Google Analytics - is there high bounce-rate issues (ie the pogo-stick effect?) - If so and your competitions pages are more engaging or "sticky" Google will prefer theirs to yours
-
Check your site for internal technical SEO issues that could be roadblocking Google crawls within your site ie robots.txt, canonical, too-deep pages, broken links, 302's instead of 301's etc - use MOZ's Crawl Test to find out these metrics and a ton more
-
Could some of your pages be suffering from algo penalties? Again, check OpenSiteExplorer for potential issues with keyword-rich anchor text
-
Page speed - are yours clunky compared to theirs - medium to high download speed can have a detrimental affect on rankings and therefore on traffic
-
Usability issues - are specific pages on your site causing visitors unnecessary roadblocks? Again if they land on your pages and bounce quickly, this will be picked up by Google
-
Lastly, your on-page SEO. Are your pages over-optimised, too diluted or have many images and little text?
There's more areas that you could investigate, but the above will give you an initial understanding of your site's overall SEO and health and will help you compare yours to theirs.

Slight keyword variation domain name
I have recently changed a clients domain name from a long (23 characters) to a shorter domain name that has a keyword plus a single character variation. For example and without revealing the clients real domain name, let say they are in housing. Ithe first letter in the company name is "p" so i created the doamin name as www.phousing.com It has only been two days since i submitted the new domain name and did a 301 redirect to the new page. When i do a google search i get back the result: housing.com and "did you mean housing.com Will this domain name cause me problems? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Why do keyword competition rankings differ between Google and SeoMoz?
I am a novice at keyword ranking etc. so I appreciate your patience! I checked a longtail keyword - how do i get out of this relationship - in Google AdWords and it came back 'low competition.' When I entered it in SeoMoz it came back as 'very competitive.' Any thoughts? I appreciate your help.

Are the other factors such as page rank, Alexa rating and mozRank used to determine where I will show up in search results, over Goggle's key word rank for my key words?

How can I get meaningful competitive analysis when I blog on Wordpress?
The competitive analysis data I get on my blog heartspm.wordpress.com is Wordpress domain data. That doesn't help me much. I know Wordpress has a lot of domain authority. Can I get comparitive information based solely on heartspm.wordpress.com?

How can my site not ranked on easy keyword while it currently ranked 1 on difficult keyword??
The site in question is http://ikt.co.id The site is perfectly optimized (or even over optimized) for keyword "Bikin Website Murah" (in Indonesia it means "develop an affordable website") currently if you search on both google.co.id AND google.com, it ranked on #10 (on google.co.id) and it ranked on #7 (on google.com), and both term only return 1.3 million results I have A LOT OF pages that started with 'bikin website' , or 'website murah' ... there are a lot of them, and i have had a lot of backlinks on those pages too (have been manually building a lot of links, starting from creating a tutorial article and blog submission and many other way) .. the site has been perfectly optimized for that keyword For example we have http://ikt.co.id/blog-category/bikin-website-murah-promo-terbaru.html (for newest promotion) http://ikt.co.id/blog/bikin-website-seo-murah-discount-40-sampai-31-juli-2011.html (for discount 40% promo that lasted untill 31 juli 2011) AND YET, if you search on google.co.id for keyword "2000 likes facebook" , our lone page that i created when our facebook likes reached that amount, RANKED #1!! , and please let me tell you this term return 400 million results++ (on google.com this keyword ranked #19, on 500 million results++). And let me tell you it take that SINGLE page (which has absolutely 0 backlinks) 2 days to ranked #1 .... and her brother if you searched "1000 likes facebook" also show similar result (though not better then the sister) How ?!? and Why ?!? , i dont understand this at all.... my domain does not contain any keyword, they uses the same engine and yet that lone pages which have absolutely no backlink ranked so well on a very competitive keyword, while my Target Keyword ranked poorly.... And what is even more bizzare? "Bikin website murah" might not rank good, but "bikin website" ranked better x_x ... arghh i dont get it... why my site ranked poorly on easy keywords and ranked high on difficult keywords :(( .... Why I am not smiling because those easy keyword is actually my primary keywords 😞

Ranking keyword VCA
We want to rank higher on the keyword VCA. Our direct competitor VCAnederland ranks one place higher and we want that place. If we look at some statics from the Open site explorer, we score better. PA: VCAdirect = 53 VS competitor = 46 DA: VCAdirect = 43 VS competitor = 39 Total links = VCAdirect = 8415 VS competitor = 3051 External followed links = VCAdirect = 8178 VS competitor = 1059 Linking root domains = VCAdirect = 146 VS competitor = 105 SEOmoz competitive Domain Analysis (gives other numbers) DA: VCAdirect = 44 VS competitor = 40 DMozrank: VCAdirect = 4.30 VS competitor = 4.50 DMozTrust: VCAdirect = 4.00 VS competitor = 4.18 when I analyze the site with the SEOmoz tool. We see this figures: VCAdirect: PA: 53 / MozR: 5.89 / MozT: 5.89 / Tot links 8415 VCAnederland: PA: 46 / MozR: 6.95 / MozT: 6.16 / Tot links 3051 On the on page Report card we score both an A.
