What basics should we be looking at in Google Analytics?
-
We have GA set up on our site for a while now. However, we do not look at the data.
We did today and it's quite overwhelming.
Is there anything in specific we should start with? A top 3 items we should start to monitor each week and try to improve?
Bonus Question: Is there a way to use analytics to find out who are competitors are?
-
Touching your bonus question:
GA will not tell you who your competitors are, however they did roll out a feature somewhat recently that allows you to see how you're doing in comparison to businesses in the same industry as you. You can find this:
Audience > Benchmarking > Channels
Select your industry vertical, region, and average number of daily sessions to find out how you stack up to what probably amounts to your competition.
Hope that's helpful!

You're right, GA data can be overwhelming if you've never looked at it before, Icarus. I almost always find the most useful place to start is the Channels report **Acquisition > All Traffic > Channels. **It will show you your current traffic divided out by the primary sources, and will also show you the comparable bounce rate, time on page etc for each.
The other report that's pretty well always essential is the Content report Behaviour > Site Content > All Pages. This will show you which individual pages are getting the most visits on the site.
Use the date selector in the top right corner to review the last month's data, and then to compare it to the previous month, or the same period of the previous year. The latter is important for sites that have seasonally-variable traffic, as it might not be sensible to compare Christmas traffic to November, for example.
Beyond that, it's going to depend on why type of site (e-commerce, lead gen, publishing) and what elements of your site you're working on to improve, to determine what might be most useful to look at.
And for the bonus, no, nothing in Analytics will tell you about your competitors. GA is for showing you what's happening on your own site.
Hope that gets you started?
Paul
P.S. Once you get going with your data, you're going to want to set up some shortcuts (quick ways to navigate to reports that usually take a number of clicks,) and Dashboards (collections of information you've decided you want to check frequently in one place instead of having to navigate through the interface each time.)

(Need helps here!) Can homepage and other internal pages (services) rank high together on Google?
Hi Moz community, Recently I am working on our website's SEO. Our company is a marketing agency. We provide general marketing services and also web design. Here is the content of our homepage and internal pages (specific services). Homepage (marketing agency) Internal page #1 (XXX marketing service) Internal page #2 (YYY marketing service) Internal page #3 (web design) I suggest to my supervisor that we could make some improvement and optimize different keywords for these 4 pages, respectively (homepage, internal page #1 #2 #3). However, my supervisor holds a different point of view that homepage and internal page#3 cannot rank both high for their own keywords because web design is not as related to marketing. So I did some research and look for some top-ranking marketing agency guys who also offer web design. I found their internal pages about web design service rank pretty bad for their own web-design-related keywords. Here are my thoughts and guess (please correct me if I am wrong): Google takes everything into account and deems web design to be kind of irrelevant content to the website, so the internal page for web design will not rank high. The internal page has so much lower power than the homepage so it got outranked by the guys whose homepages are all about web design and development. My question is: In above case, can homepage and other internal pages (our services) all rank high together for their own keywords? I know what I wrote is kind of confusing...But I really need help here and want to solve this problem badly. Really appreciate any help!! Thank you in advance! Best, Raymond

Majestic gives me a 24 situation and 24 trust flow. Seomoz just a total number of 7\. How come the difference? My ranking is still bad, so is Majestic crawling faster then google?
Hi, my total domain value number on SEOmoz is 7. In Majestic it is 24 situation and 24 trust flow. My ranking is still bad (page2) and my competitors have a lower trust/ situation flow in Majestic. But in Seomoz the're better. Is the conclusion that Majestic is more up to date then Google itself and that Seomoz is more inline with the google crawling? Because Majestic doesnt reflect my ranking. (ps I started with the domain for a month, and I only have some history in registration)

Google serps for split keyword searches
A client has come to me with an issue with the marketing of their website. it is mainly focused around the search of their name. the site is an Magento GO hosted e-commerce based site through Magento. it requires a good amount of optimisation and its in a very competitive market - which has high volume of searches. When entering the name of the business it doesn't show on the first page of Google but it does on Bing or Yahoo. The site name is lovehugz and is UK based The issue is when searched for by name lovehugz it appears on the second page, however if the search term is separated love hugz it appears first on the first page. The site is poorly optmised at present with the page title limited to the name lovehugz. Does anybody know of reasons why Google might be behaving in this manner and what steps should be taken to overcome. Optimising for the name is not the only aim here, however it something that should be in place for people searching by name, There is a lot of work to be done to optimise the site for its essential relevant keywords to stand a chance in its market. Any ideas of help would be greatly appreciated thanks

What are the competition's Google Places pages optimised for?
I'm doing some work on a client's Googe Places page, and wondered if there's any way to see what a completitors Places page is currently optimised or categorised for? Basically, we're trying to rank for 'Bathrooms Edinburgh' and almost all of the page 1 SERP's are (unsurprisingly) full of Places results, with #1 Organic slot right down at the bottom of the page. In short - we NEED to get our Places page kicked into shape, and pronto! So, is there any way to find out how the competition's Places pages are ranking so well? e.g. What have they categorised themselves under? Cheers in advance folks, JM
