Article Submissions for Link Building

Does anyone have any experience submitting articles as a Link Building method, and if so, do you have any specific submission sites that you would recommend?

If you look at Rand's latest White Board Friday, you'll see his opinion on article submissions for link building at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/article-marketing-mostly-a-scam-whiteboard-friday (hint: it's not real positive). I agree with Dejan SEO that there are better methods of link building, and don't spend a whole lot of time on this method.

Lists of article hosting sites are available online however value of having the link from duplicate content is not as exciting as arranging unique blog posts or articles on different websites. If I was you I would perform this activity once per month and focus on other activities.

Unfortunately I have no direct experience of article submission so I look forward to hearing from other members?

Competitors black-hat link building?
Hi Mozzers, <a>http://www.alivenetwork.com/ </a>is a close competitor of ours. They're ranking far better than us even though many of our search metrics are the same...except one! links! To give you an idea, we've got a fairly large backlink profile for the industry with quality links.

34,981 links from 276 Root Domains = about 127 links/domain. Alive Network has 1,692,256 links from 705 root domains = about 2400 links/domain. Surely that looks a bit black-hat right there? Is it just a matter of time until they're penalised? Perhaps they're just a bunch of domain-wide links? Thoughts would be appreciated.1 -
Link building via Rafflecopter
I received an invite from a company to enter a contest for a chance to win a prize. The contest is run by Rafflecopter. Rafflecopter looks interesting because you can place the contest anywhere including social sites and your own website. Contestants can increase the chances of winning in various ways such as an FB like, tweet, etc. The largest number of points (for this particular contest) are awarded for linking from your website to their website. Given that the contestant must add the link to their website and the sponsoring company can not control whether they use nofollow, couldn't this contest approach to link building cause problems for SEO? If the contest included instructions to copy and paste the html with a nofollow, that would seem like a better solution, but the only guidance given was to link to their home page. Your thoughts? So I have my list of domains and contact information for link building. What is the best approach to contact webmasters to link build? Is there any standard way to ask them to add my link on their page? Does anyone have a generic boilerplate email?

So assuming you provide high quality guest posts to high quality blogs, is it okay or not to use this method as a link building technique?
