What else should we be doing?
-
I have several keywords that are on the first or second page, with a couple main ones that we are targeting. Around 9million results for the main keyword we are trying to rank for.
We have been writing articles on various high PR sites, posts on various forums with 1-2 signature links, already have been listed in DMOZ/google directory/etc for 8+months, 6 year old domain name, BOTW directory listing and various other directories. We write 1-2 blog posts weekly, and then post the URL on twitter and other social networking sites. 1-2 months ago we re-coded our website to load faster.
So, what else should we be doing that we already aren't to make the jump from page 2-3 to page 1?
I see a lot of recommendations to reach out to related websites and ask to guest post on their blog or come up with a link. In our industry it is very hard to do this, since most related sites are competitors who are selling a commercial product.

There is an SEOMoz tool
Competitive Link Research Tool
that can be used to see if there are certain sites that are providing decent links to multiple competitors.
Also worth investigating the link profiles of competitors using the Open SIte Explorer might give you some ideas of sites to approach.
-
Sounds like your links are just not strong enough. Press release links decay quickly as the release gets pushed down, forum sig links are virtually spam and BOTW links get diluted due to all the others on the page.
Go the extra mile. Make a list of link targets, then create a strategy to get a link from those sites. Think out of the box!

Pages with similar content: Redirect or Canonical? Or something else?
We have two pages on our site with similar content. One was originally a landing page for a marketing campaign, somewhat of a micro-site feel with a lot of content. We recently optimized another page on the site with much of the same content from the original landing page/micro-site. In order to avoid duplicate content, and to let Google know our authority page is the new page, we're wondering what is best practice: Should we... 301 redirect the old page? No index the old page? Keep both pages and use a canonical to tell Google the new page is authority? Or something else?

Has anyone else noticed a big change in SERPS in the past week or two
We've had a massive change in our position, we were pretty stable on certain keywords for quite some time, however in the past week we were bouncing around and then thrown completely off with some of our keywords dropping to page 4 and some to page 2. I've noticed a lot of changes on the google uk serps, and not sure if it is just a penguin refresh or if its a new one that hasn't been announced. anyone else notice?

Hreflang or not, or something else?
I'm working on a site that has 10 languages served from centrally located core files in Magento. So each language has its own TLD with localised content served from SQL. GWT has also had the preferred country set for each domain. The problem is that each and every domain is indexed in each of the local Google indexes. In DE Google the FR homepage is ranking higher for the brand keyword. I kind of think I am wasting my time with hreflang but would like some advice whether this is an option or clues how I can handle this situation best.

Complimentary sub-brand; subdomain, subfolder, something else?
Hello forum! I have a question about subdomains vs. subfolders for a new sub-brand for a company. The company is looking at creating a sub-brand delivering a different service to the parent company. It is complimentary in a sense, but it would need a very different marketing strategy. It is not trying to 'hide' its parent brand at all, but instead would leverage the parent brand as added social proof. I've read that creating a subdomain essentially means starting from scratch in terms of SEO, and that a subfolder would better leverage the domain authority the TLD has accrued. However, creating a subfolder does not really gel with me, as it would not in my opinion provide a good experience for visitors. I.e. it's like running a website that sells electronics and having a subfolder marketing IT support services. Yes, there is some synergy-- but it can also lead to visitor confusion. I'd love your opinions on this! Carlo

Does anyone else have issues with atomysolutions.com?
Nearly all of my domains in webmaster tools show thousands of links to me from atomysolutions.com. Problem is only a couple links show up to them in OSE so can't learn much there. I try to access their site but every page I do I get a 403 forbidden error. All I can gather is they are some kind of health and beauty thing. I did a site search in Google and looked at the cached result of the first page but it took me to sexyshoes.co.uk or something. I honestly cannot figure out. OSE shows them as one of my linking domains, but I can't see any of the pages linking to me. I need to know if this is a spammy site that I need to disavow. I have no idea how or why they link to me. Any insight from any Mozzers is GREATLY appreciated! 🙂

Anybody else seeing Penguin corrections?
Hi,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | rayvensoft
Over the past few days, I have noticed that a few of my pages that were hit by the Google Penguin update come back from the dead and return to the #1 spot for the main keywords. I still don't see any change for secondary keywords I used to rank for, but hey at least there is something. Has anybody else noticed this? NOTE: I did not make any changes to my pages. I had never done any black-hat (just greyish) so I took the advice of many and just waited.1 -
Penguin or something else?
Mid April my site www.musicliveuk.com lost almost all its rankings. I'm still non the wiser as to why and it seems a little earlier that the penguin update. I wonder if any of you guys could take a look and offer any suggestions as to what might have happened? I'm relatively new to SEO and have worked on my own site myself? If I've made some mistakes how do I fix it?
