I need to get my hands on some already registered domains?!?
-
Hi Guys & Gals,
There are a couple of already registered domains i'd like to get my hands on, but i'm coming up against a brick wall.
I have already tried contacting the domain owners directly if there contact info is available through whois and tried using a domain brokerage service from the likes of SEDO to try and acquire the domain on my behalf...but they seem to only work they have solid whois contact info to use.
My problem is that where do I turn now after the above routes failing? Are there any good domain brokerage services you are aware off or any other approach I could try to aquire such domains??
Thanks
James

Without accurate WHOIS info you face a big problem. I have had success tracking those people down (but i had to WORK for it). These ideas are geared towards inaccurate and not private registration (save the first one which applies to both):
1. You can place a backorder and wait until the domain expires to snatch it up. Google how to do this effectively because you aren't the only one who is after that domain.
2. Search for the whois email in the search engines to see if you can find any sites that have that email on them. Go through each site and do some investigating and you might get lucky by finding their profile somewhere. Use any alternate forms of contact you find. Repeat this step with each form of contact that you find.
3. Use location information from the whois and whatever names they have there and look up old phone records. i.e. If they gave you st. paul, alberta canada and only part of their name you would find the phonebook (call the local phone companies in the area...they sometimes have old ones that they are happy to mail) that was published just after the domain was registered and go down the list calling each potential match. This works if they typed their phone number wrong.
4. Go to the domain you are after and have a look at the website. If it is a standard template looking thing then you can run some of the words on the page through copyscape.com and see any other domains he has registered. Also try googling those phrases as well. This one is hit or miss.
5. Submit a whois complaint: http://wdprs.internic.net/
Hope this helps!

There are brokerage services yes, but you'll find you have to sign up to them and then you'll start getting a lot of spam emails (at least that's what happened to me). Your ISP should have some kind of a domain watcher service to let you know when domains become available. But you should know that domains don't necessarily keep their value when they switch ownership... if the whois info changes along with the content then it might lose any age based benefit that it did have in the eyes of Google. You might be better of just going with a whole brand new domain, just including a hyphen in there or something... will be a lot cheaper to purchase too!

Should a company's online tool be hosted on their own domain?
Our company is developing a web-based tool that will provide good value for its users and generate leads for us. The tool is large enough in scope and different enough than the main service that we provide that we're considering putting it on its own domain. I have two questions: 1. Does it behoove a company to put their online tool on a separate domain if the tool is large enough in scope and different enough from their website's core function / business's core service? (Examples of this would be Hubspot's Marketing Grader or Open Site Explorer before Moz rolled it back into its domain.) 2. If yes, should the domain name a) describe the function of the tool or b) build a brand for the tool itself? Thanks for your help!

Domain authority vs indexed pages
Hello, There are many articles and from our personal experience we can say that you can rank a page without backlinks with high DA but we cant figure out if DA of domain help to rank as the link juice ( so the link juice going from home page thru all pages to specific page) or it will rank a page even if its not linked in any way from homepage or any other pages and even if it not linked in any way from other pages and still ranks just because of high DA, does that DA value will spread even above all indexed pages if you have lets say 100,000 pages, i mean if domain has 100 indexed pages and DA of 50 and another domain has 100,000 and DA of 100, if both pages are the same on those domains and have no backlinks to it from my understanding page on domain with 100 indexed pages and DA of 50 suppose to rank higher ? Please share what you think

Separate experience on the same domain?
So my company is interested in creating a scholarship for medical students as a way to create more brand awareness and earn some quality links from universities and colleges. The problem is, we are a little stuck on where to place the scholarship within the structure of our site. First of all, our idea is to make the scholarship application process interactive and social. Candidates will create a short video where they answer one of the scholarship questions. Those videos will be displayed in a Reddit-style feed (sort of like Inbound.org) allowing people to vote for the ones they like. Videos with more links will rise to the top. The popularity of the videos will factor into the decision of whom to award the scholarship, but it will not be the sole determining factor. To do this properly, the scholarship should be its own experience independent from our main site. There will be several pages (profile, application, about the scholarship, the Reddit-style feed, etc.) so it wouldn’t really fit within our existing site. BUT if we put the scholarship on a subdomain we miss out on the link juice. Could we keep the scholarship pages under the main domain (mainsite.com/scholarship), but have it be its own experience with its own navigation? Will that look bad in the eyes of the search engines? We’d essentially have two sites on the same domain. Any help would be much appreciated.

Considering Switch to old Domain - Any Bad Karma?
So here is the issue. I am working with a company that used to have a branded domain. Then they split the domain into two separate keyword rich domains and tried to change branding to match the keyword rich domains. This made for a really long brand name that is difficult to actually rank for as it is mostly hi traffic key terms and also created brand confusion because all of the social accounts still operate under the old brand name. We are considering a new brand initiative and going back to the original brand name as it better meets our business objectives (they still get traffic from branded searches under the old brand) and the old branded web domain. My question is if there is any added risk in going back to an old domain that has been forwarded for the past 2 years to the new domain? I know the risks and problems of a domain name change, but I am not as certain about the added complication of moving back to an old domain and essentially reversing the flow of 301's. Any thoughts? Cheers!

301 or 302 for one of our domains
We have one of our sites that we got rid of and incorporated into our "main" site. We left a 302 redirect from the old sites URL to a landing page on the new site. It act as a branded stub page before registration. We are currently using a 302 to redirect from www.oldsite.com -> www.newbigsite.com/old-site Should I change this to a 301? I loose my google SERP ranking for www.oldsite.com if I do the 301 and it will be replaced by www.newbigsite.com/old-site correct? Thanks

Do you buy keyword strong domains around your brand?
Do you buy keyword domains around your brand? If so do you do this for future use or for redirecting to a sub domain off your core site or for other reasons?
