My question is in regards to possible conflict in creating an additional website under a new domain for our company.

Our companies, Vulcan Information Packaging and ATC both live under the domain “www.binders.com”. This is a great thing as far as us dominating in the binder industry. However, in the next 2-3 years and forward, we want to build our presence as a company who offers packaging products such as boxes, marketing kits, and other forms of packaging. Obviously, the “binders.com” brand/domain does not contribute much to this effort and can be confusing to customers visiting the site. Essentially, we want to build an additional branding for our company in the packaging industry.
Keeping this in mind, we own the domain “www.vulcaninformationpackaging.com” and we are considering building a new website using this domain which contains the word “packaging”. This new site would only promote and contain packaging related products. This new website will advertise and direct traffic to our company Vulcan Information Packaging, which is the same company “binders.com” directs traffic to.
So my question is to determine whether doing this might be a practice that Google and other search engines might frown upon. I tend to think it will be fine because we will be promoting and driving traffic for non-binder products where as, binders.com is heavily in binder related products.

Our thought process is that binders.com limits us to binders and as we all know, looseleaf binders are slowly going away. What comes to your mind when you both think about binders.com? I assume ring/looseleaf binders. So our long term goal behind considering building a new website using vulcaninformationpackaing.com is to strengthen our position as a packaging company, not a binder company.
So anyway, my question wasn't so much about if it's a good idea to build the new website but if Google and other search engines will have a problem with us having 2 websites representing the same company, which is Vulcan Information Packaging. binders.com will continue to promote binders and the new site vulcaninformationpackaging will promote packaging. But they will both represent Vulcan Information Packaging.

That's a really good point, Julie.
My suggestion above about a new domain such as VulcanProducts.com was assuming that binders.com would be redirected to pass its ranking value - I just didn't say anything about the redirect. Even with that, some ranking value will pass, but possibly/probably not all.

If you've owned Binders.com for a long time and it ranks really well in the SERPS, you might think that creating and ranking a new domain won't be difficult. If your company execs think this, they are potentially in for a big disappointment.
If you start a brand new website from scratch, you could wait a long time before it ranks well enough to bring you any sales. Ranking a subdomain on your current site would certainly be quicker.

I think that Google will rank your websites based upon their quality for each individual querry. I think that customers will find the names and domains confusing. Most of my sites are on exact match keyword domains and those domans can have a limited fit for a growing collection of products and services. A domain that has no product association might be a better fit for a diverse company. VulcanProducts or VulcanServices or something similar might retain a portion of your identity and allow you to build a website for a more diverse company.
You have mentioned "advertising" and "directing traffic" from one domain to another. Would it be more efficient to place all of your efforts into one domain, make everything extremely clear, and focus all of your energy into a single attack. Catching visitors on domain A and transferring them to domain B is like trying to kill rabbits with a ricochet. Just shoot 'em.

Thanks much for your response and thoughts. The challenge we face is with our domain which is so focused and limiting. Or so it seems to me. Our domain is binders.com, we do currently market other products such as boxes and packaging but because of the binders.com domain, we feel it might be limiting as far as incoming traffic. This is the main reason we are considering building a new website under www.vulcaninformationpackaging.com, geared more toward packaging only and not binders. I would appreciate any additional input from you. Also, from your experience, do you see a problem in regards to Google and other search engines if we do decide to create a website under vulcaninformationpackaging.com that directs traffic to Vulcan Information Packaging, which is the same company represented under binders.com?

Generic advice on this matter isn't good advice. You have to consider a lot of things and then put them together.
One of the most important things that I would consider is how many of your current customers would be customers of these new services. The higher that number the more strongly I would consider keeping everything on one domain and changing the business name to something that fits all types of products offered by the company.
From an SEO perspective, uniting your brands usually creates a more formidable web presence that is more difficult to beat in the SERPs than building a new site for every new product.
So, if I thought that I could create a website that funnels visitors to what they need easily and efficiently then I might do everything on one website. A lot of people don't want to mix business lines or don't want to think hard or are not up to the design challenge. They take the easy route and build a separate site. I would work hard to avoid that if the products and services are complimentary.

We have a website of a furniture company that runs an Adwords campaign. This company has a lot of distributors. They have several objetives: people explore the online catalog people visit the distributor page (where they can find the nearest distributor in his/her area) people share the pictures and info in social media. (For example: pictures in pinterest) people watch videos new distributors contact them to be a new distributor and so on. As this is not an eccommerce website they can not buy We have created objectives in analytics to meassure those engament results.
My question is how to measure this in Google Adwords...
If I import GA objetives into adwords, I get conversions rates of 350% and even more, and the number of conversions is to high. For example. If one objetive is to visit Distributors page (the one where users can see a map and search for the nearest distributor), I find with a lot of conversions of this type. I was thinking in importing some objectives and giving them a value in $ and instead of evaluating conversion rates, evaluate ROAS. But I really would like to know, what you are doing with this kind of companies. How do you measure the campaign success when most of the objetives are measuring engagement. A forum on your primary domain name (implications)
Hi there What are the pitfalls of putting a forum on an already busy ecommerce website from an SEO perspective?

I wouldn't use a sub domain, I would add the forum on the primary domain in an attempt to help build my inbound link portfolio. Some pro's and cons that come to mind... Pros - Lots of (hopefully) great user generated and relevant content - Lots of potential landing pages off the back of the above Targeted community Cons - Dealing with potential negative forum posts Constant moderation Possible issues with potentially 1000's of (what Google may consider) low quality pages on a domain name / site which currently fairs well in the SERPs The last con would be my primary concern.
Anyone have any experiences with this? Or any advice at all. Many thanks0 -
Buying a used domain - redirecting, pluses etc?
Hi, I have a 6 year old domain which has been the basis for my main business website operation. http://www.kent-website-designer.co.uk/ Im in the process of cleaning up some messy sitewide footer kinks that come to the notice of Penguin update. I think I can clear up a lot of links but obviously need to add some better links for the future to improve. Ive gone from #1 to #60. I was thinking of a rebrand as the EMD isnt doing much good anymore in benefits plus the drop in rankings and also Google definately favouring brand links over concentrated anchor texts. So maybe the time is ideal. The design needs a refresh anyway.... I have found a 1999 .co.uk domain which has some non keyword related 1999 links to it...nice. Its a very reasonable price. Its not going to have inbounds from my related markets, not ideal but it has no negative stuff either. Also its a very simple but rememberable name like Google or Yahoo. Great for branding. Its parked but Waybackmachine shows indexing back to `99 and google cache has some content on it. However OSE shows low domain / page authority. Im thinking of redirecting my current domain to the new one, passing some of the positives of age and titles...and replicating the site through 301`s. Is this worth doing in anyones opinion? Only thing with my domain isany branding words are anchor text words too. I cant win.

Which industry has the HIGHEST % of awful looking websites! ??
I have an auto upholstery client that wants a new website and some SEO work done here locally. I take to Google to check out the competition in some other states to get a feel for whats other sites are doing and I just spent 30 minutes looking at 53 different websites and I swear not a one of them is worth $20 Have you run into any industries that historically have terrible websites? Trying to decide on best domain
I am trying to decide on a domain for a real estate site in Utah where the area code is 801. My choices are utahhomes801.com, the search term "utah homes" get 3600 exact matches, utahrealestate801.com with "utah real estate" getting 22,200 exact matches or forget the 801 and go for a shorter domain Utahnow.net or utahhomeboy.com. Is there any reason to stay away from 801 in the domain? Any thought or direction would be appreciated. Scott

Which domain name should i choose for a air ticket search engine?
Hi, i am deciding to buy a domain name for a air ticket search engine. i want to target australia first and then worldwide in the future. most of the names with my keywords "cheap flights" are already been registered. I have tried many combination but could not find a proper name. One question is does keywords rich domains (not exact) helps a lot? also i was thinking if i can an keyword rich domain i could easily get links with the desired anchor text links. would it be a lot harder to get a domain name e.g. flightscomparision.com while targeting the term "cheap flights" or "cheap fares". Do you split your personalities up? Do you have a private, personal Twitter acccount in addition to your professional Twitter account?
I read a lot on SEO, but I read way more on another unrelated subject matter (and have way more to say). Should I split my Twitter account into two distinct accounts (one for each subject matter)? Do you keep a private, personal Twitter for screwing around with your friends and/or getting the word out on social issues pertaining only to your social circle? Or do you just use your professional account for this? Or do you somehow manage to not "waste time" on purely personal social networking? [UPDATE: To abstract my question a bit: should I cultivate distinctly branded personal nicknames for different spaces that I am interested in?
