How can I increase my domain authority score?
-
We've jumped up in our rankings, page authority scores, and our toolbar PR over the past year, but our domain authority score remains the same as it was this time last year.
I have noticed that for most people's sites, domain authority is typically higher than page authority, and my suspicion is that our domain authority score staying static is capping our page authority potential to some degree. Our SEOmoz scores are quite low for our toolbar PR.
I've looked at the SEOmoz page relating to domain authority, and it rather vaguely says 'improve SEO generally across your site'.
Other than age, the only thing I can think of is that maybe we have backlinks ranging across too broad a spectrum of topics. Being a web hosting company, we get a lot of links from our customers' sites that aren't related to our industry.
Anyone got any specific advice? To provide some context, it's a PR7 website that's around a decade old with links in the hundred thousands. We score just 59 for domain authority.
Thanks in advance,
Jenni

Good point, I guess it's partly because it's an 'unknown' factor right now and I want to find out more about it. We rank better than a couple of competitors who have much better page and domain authority scores and I'm curious as to why that is. It seems like there is a big discrepancy between how SEOmoz views our site and how Google views it (search rankings + toolbar PR), and I'm wondering what's causing it.
We spend a lot of time on tools, content and website improvement, which definitely has a lot of customer benefits so it's worth doing it for that alone - customer satisfaction is our main focus. We have gained a lot of links and personal recommendations which are massively valuable in themselves, but domain authority hasn't increased at all. Thanks for your reply, always good to keep an eye on the bigger picture

We have gained quite a lot of good links to our core inner pages in the last year, including one from The Guardian. It seems strange that our domain authority hasn't even increased by 1 from that over the course of a year.
On the other hand, we have lots of pages so maybe we need to try and attract links to a greater number of them. Thanks for the idea!

I agree. The only way I know of to increase Domain Authority is in bound links from other trusted sites.
-
From my understanding in order to improve your Domain Authority score, you need to acquire more incoming links to your deep content pages and have a good internal link structure which will allow you to pass your linkjuice from page to page across your website.
This is just an assumption, but you are probably attracting a lot of links to your home page rather than sharing or spreading that linkjuice across your website using internal links or acquiring incoming links to your deep pages.
Domain Authority in essence measures your entire website as a whole, try to distrubute your links that are pointed to your homepage, and send that link juice to your content pages across your website.
Use infographics, or other great content to attract deep incoming links to your website, than use internal linking to spread linkjuice to your other pages on your website.
Hope that helps:)

Your site sounds a lot like mine.
I am betting that your site is pretty successful.
If that is true then why is it important to improve the domain authority? I think that is something that arrives on its own if you are building a great website. It is the result of being a great webmaster.
Just saying what I would be doing... I would not be chasing domain authority, I would be focused on things that please visitors, improve my website, make people want to link to it. Do that and domain authority will rise as a result.

Domain Authority
Hi, I've been adding links to my site on directories, article sites and relevant industry blogs. I've also been given and a budget for Google Ads, which has also increased traffic. In the last week my Keyword positions have risen. However, my domain authority has reduced. I know the most important thing is improving traffic and keywords but I'd like to know how I can improve my domain authority. What is causing it to reduce and how can I improve it? Cheers,

Authority from Linking Root Domains: youtube.com / wikipedia.org / adobe.com
Hi there, Presently doing competitor analysis and note two competitors who have a way higher 'moz domain authority' than my client. Using moz tools I notice their top 5 linking root domains all have a score of 100. Refer to screen shot. Of note, both list youtube.com and _wikipedia.org. _ Similarly, my client's domain is ALSO linked from their user profile on youtube.com. They also have a published wiki page with their URL linked. BUT, youtube.com or wikipedia.org are not listed in their "top 5 linking root domains". Their highest scoring linking root domain is prweb.com - with a score of 97. If my client has links on these top domains why would they not be listed in my client's top five domains list like they are listed in their competitors top five? Researching for reasons I came across this old post (2009) here - http://moz.com/blog/followed-links-from-four-unexpected-sources - and wonder if the competitor's links are 'followed' links - even though all resources suggest wiki and youtube are definitely 'no follow' links? Other interesting "Top 5" domains that are listed for my competitors as top "linking root domains" are microsoft.com, adobe.com and europa.eu - again, refer to screenshot. Questions are IF these top linking root domains are in fact 'followed' links/valuable links and help with domain authority scores calculated by the moz tool then 1) HOW do I get these links to show/provide the same value? AND 2) How are my competitors, who are simply travel products, getting links from top domains like adobe.com? I do hope all the above makes sense and that I'm using/interpreting the moz comparative tool correctly! Cheers iGe864i.jpg?1

Can SEOMOZ do Local SEO ?
Most of our clients are local but we can not get local or regional (for example VA State or Washington DC) SERP results within SEOMOZ. it would be nice to create custom search profiles based on region (State or County) and track SERP within SEOMOZ. Ranking reports and even keyword difficulty analysis etc. within SEOMOZ are misleading for local web sites. SEOMOZ default site setup assumes every business doing SEO serves all over the US. I think it will be very beneficial if we have a choice to select State or County of local web sites during initial campaing set up at SEOMOZ. what do you think? do you know any work around of this problem? Thanks,

Can someone explain why I have been seeing an increase in the number of Linking Page URLs in OSE that link directly to downloads?
Ever since the last couple Linkscape updates when doing competitive back link analysis I have noticed a large increase in the number of URLs of Linking Pages in OSE that result in an immediate file download. The majority of the time these downloads are not common files ie PDF, DOC files. For example, these were all in a competitors back link profile: http://download.unesp.br/linux/debian/pool/main/i/isc-dhcp/isc-dhcp-relay-dbg_4.1.1-P1-17_ia64.deb http://snow.fmi.fi/data/20090210_eurasia_sd_025grid.mat http://www.rose-hulman.edu/class/me/HTML/ES204_0708_S/working model examples/Le25 mad hatter.wm?a=p&id=145880&g=5&p=sia&date=iso&o=ajgrep These are just a few I came across for a single competitor. Is this sketchy black hat SEO, some sort of error, actual links, or something else? Any information on this subject would be helpful. Thank you.

Crawl Rate for Lower Page Authority Websites
Hi,At thumbtack.com we get tons of links from low (or no) page authority websites, and I'm wondering what the crawl rate of those links looks like. I know Google pulls in the web at an astonishing rate, but I'd imagine they aren't re-crawling lower PA very frequently. Are they discovering these links a week after they're posted? A month? More? I spent a while looking around for histograms of actual crawl rates and found surprisingly little. I'd love to see average crawl rate by Domain or Page Authority if that exists anywhere.

Thanks!-MichaelP.S. Here are some random examples of the types of pages with inbound links I'm talking about. Normally we wouldn't spend too much time thinking about these, but there's just so many of them we can't ignore it!- http://www.majestic-cleaners.webs.com/- http://domchieraphotography.blogspot.com/- http://charlottepiano.musicteachershelper.com/- http://pin-upgirlphotography.vpweb.com/default.html- http://jfaithful.weebly.com/0 -
Can anyone edit their comments?
I've been unable to edit my comments here for about a week 😕 Just me or is it like this for everyone? Tried FF 4, Chrome, IE 9, Safari and iPhone Safari. Just get the loading icon. If it's just me I'll submit a bug report.
