  • Our company wanted to experiment on whether it truly is more beneficial to use Yext for citations rather than to do them ourselves. The thought process here, is that when we manually do the citations, some of our listings would increase in quality. The problem we have been running into, is that Yext has exclusive deals with nearly half of the sources we were previously listed under. Is there a way around this, or is Yext truly worth the cost?

  • Hi all, We are currently working on implementing structured data to our webshop, for SEO and for google shopping. We sell stones, pebbles, gravel etc. (to be used in gardens).We offer each product in different sized bags. Customers can buy 20KG minibags, 250KG minibags, 500KG midibags, 1500KG bigbags and bulk quantities (ranging from 3000KG up to 35000KG). For example, we sell Black Beach Pebbles in the bags as described as above (+ the bulk quantities). We have a product page for these Black Beach Pebbles and on that product page customers can choose the desired bag or desired bulk quantity. For google shopping, visitors land on these productpages. A while back that caused a problem; the landing page contained different prices so sometimes google could not match the prices on the landing page with the prices in our productfeed (because of course, each bag has a different price). So, besides SEO, another reason for us to implement structured data. I have two questions regarding the implementation. 1. For the landing page as described above, the idea now is to mark 1 product with different offers (an offer for each bag + an offer for the bulk quantities). This raises a problem regarding the bulk quantities; the price of the bulk quantity depends on the chosen quantity (customers can pick the desired bulk quantity using a dropdown) on the productpage. How should we markup the price? The idea know is to markup 1 product with different offers for each bag and 1 aggregate offer for the bulk quantities (and using the lowest price, so the price for the smallest bulk quantity). So, for the Black Beach pebbles: Product = Black beach Pebbles
      Offer (= 20KG minibag)
          Price = ...
      Offer (= 250KG minibag)
          Price = ...
      Offer (= 500KG midibag)
         Price = ...
      Offer (= 1500KG bigbag)
         Price = ...
      AggregateOffer (= Bulk quantities)
         Lowprice = ... Is combining Offer and AggregateOffer within 1 product the right solution? 2. For the 1500KG Bigbags and bulk quantities we have separate landing pages (because people specifically search for bigbags and bulk quantities). So those landing pages are dedicated to bigbags / bulk quantities. How should we mark up those pages? Should we for example just do this: On the page for te bigbag:
    Product = Black Beach Pebbles 1500KG bigbag
      Offer (=Black Beach Pebbles 1500KG bigbag)
         Price =.... and on the page for the bulk quantities: Product = Black Beach Pebbles bulk quantities
      AggregateOffer (=Black Beach Pebbles bulk quantities)
         Lowprice=...... Could that cause any confusion for google, because on the productpage with all the available bags, the bigbag is an offer for the product 'Beach Pebbles Black'. And on the second page it is a product on its own. Thanks in advance! Best!

  • Due to the restraints of category page layout many of the products in certain categories have the product titles truncated, in some cases missing off 2-5 words depending on the product in question.  The product name which displays on the category page is lifted straight from the product page itself, so not possible to do something like "product name including spec..."  to place ... to indicate a bit more. I'm assuming not but just wanted to check that Google will not frown on this.  Text is not being hidden it just does not render fully in the restricted space.  So there is a scenario of 'bits of' text in the source not displaying on the rendered page.

  • Hi, I am checking a website for SEO and I've noticed that a lot of pages from the blog have the following meta robots: meta name="robots" content="follow" Normally these pages should be indexed, since search engines will index and follow by default. In this case however, a lot of pages from this blog are not indexed. Is this because the meta robots is specified, but only contains follow? So will search engines only index and follow by default if there is no meta robots specified at all? And secondly, if I would change the meta robots, should I just add index or remove the meta robots completely from the code? Thanks for checking!

  • Our website was rebranded and relaunched. The old site did not use a / at the end of the URL. The site uses a forward slash at the end of the URL. My developer claims that this makes no difference, that in Google's eyes this is meaningless. My concern is that link juice will be lost because this necessitates a redirect. Links that were developed in the last few months now are redirected to the identical domain, but with a backslash at the end. Is this something to be concerned about or is it meaningless? Thanks,

  • I know the ratio matters of follow/no follow when it comes to backlinks/inbound but also if there is a high volume of them per week, it can be flagged as spammy. Is there a limit on how many backlinks can be done in a week for a domain? I am talking backlinks from high domain authority low spam links. Media/blog sites.

  • I was wondering if anyone would be able to share some data structure/indexing best practices.   We have a site that has pages designed to display National/State/City level data - all pages have slight variations in the data and descriptions - but we're seeing google index some of the city level data for national level keywords. the URL structure is www.mysite.com/Country/State/City/Topic.html For example - if the query was "what is the price of beans?"  we're seeing Google pick up localized versions - i.e. mysite.com/US/CA/San_Francisco/price-of-beans.html - when it should be picking up mysite.com/US/price-of-beans.html I've toyed with the idea of using the national level page as the canonical for the state/city pages - but I don't want to hurt state/city level keywords. Because some of the pages have only slight variances - we are also seeing a lot of soft 404 errors - We're assuming that Google is seeing the pages as duplicates even though the content is different. Any insight/suggestions are appreciated.

  • I recently changed my wordpress theme from a standard free theme to a newer theme. The home page I switched up a bit adding more calls to action to some of our top posts and leading people to popular categories and so on. This greatly improved the usability of our site as it allowed us to highlight new posts. The previous free template simply listed 10 of our most recent posts on a page with small snippets and then you had to move to the next page to keep reading. Since switching my theme the blog traffic has stayed relatively level. That being said, the specific posts traffic is going up a lot whereas the organic traffic to the blog homepage is now nearly depleted. Is this a common thing to happen or is there anything I can do to fix this issue?

  • Err, when did this happen?  Although you can still enter a Title in the WP image library, when inserting into a post the Title tag is not implemented.  Alt text is there OK but not Title. There was a plugin around that restored this basic seo functionality but it's no longer available. I mean - honestly!

  • What happens if a canonical link, links to the url with / but the main url does not have the / For example: rel="canonical" href="https://www.exampleURL.co.uk/"> Main URL - https://www.exampleURL.co.uk (without the /) 301 Redirect https://www.exampleURL.co.uk/ to https://www.exampleURL.co.uk Would this create some sort of crawler redirection loop?

  • hi there. my website is for a school. We have several calendars for athletic events, school events, etc. there are thousands of events each year that link to pages for each event. the URLs/pages are generated dynamically, and the urls and pages are very similar from year to year, so we're being penalized for duplicate content. I can delete past years events in bulk, but there's no way to redirect them in bulk. am i taking a big chance by deleting events that occurred prior to 1/1/2019?

  • We are working with a content based startup that needs to 301 redirect a lot of its pages to other websites. Will give you an example to help you understand. If we assume this is the startups domain and URL structure www.ourcompany.com/brand1/article What they want to do is do a 301 redirect of www.ourcompany.com/brand1/ to www.brand1.com I have never seen 301 as a problem to SEO or link juice. But in this case where all the major URLs are getting redirected to other sites i was wondering if it would have a negative effect. Right now they have just 20-30 brands but they are planning to hit a couple of hundreds this year.

  • Our primary website https://domain.com has a subdomain https://subDomain.domain.com and on that subdomain we have a jive-hosted community, with a few links to and fro. In GA they are set up as different properties but there are many SEO issues in the jive-hosted site, in which many different people can create content, delete content, comment, etc. There are issues related to how jive structures content, broken links, etc. My question is this: Aside from the SEO issues with the subdomain, can the performance of that subdomain negatively impact the SEO performance and rank of the primary domain? I've heard and read conflicting reports about this and it would be nice to hear from the MOZ community about options to resolve such issues if they exist. Thanks.

  • I get this explanation on the grader: Although using targeted keywords in H1 tags on your page does not directly correlate to high rankings, it does appear to provide some slight value. It's also considered a best practice for accessibility and helps potential visitors determine your page's content, so we recommend it. Over-using keywords, however, can be perceived as keyword stuffing (a form of search engine spam) and can negatively impact rankings, so use keywords in H1 tags two or fewer times. To adhere to best practices in Google News and Bing News, headlines should contain the relevant keyword target and be treated with the same importance as title tags. But I have the keyword in an H1 tag, only once. So why am getting this message on the grader? The URL is https://www.armsecuritysystems.com/business-security-systems/ The keyword is "business security systems" Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there, In October, one of our customer's programmer made a change on their website to optimize its loading speed. Since then, the all the SEO's metrics has dropped. Apparently, the change was to move to CloudFlare and to add Gzip compression. I was talking with the programmer and he told me he had no idea why that happened. Now comes 5 months later and the SEO metrics havn't come back yet. What seems so wierd is that two keywords in particular had the most massive drop. Those two keywords were the top keywords (more than 1k of impressions a month) and now its like there is no impressions or clics at all. Did anyone had the same event occur to them? Do you have any idea what could help this case?

  • Hi all, I would like to start works to give our website more visibility for 'near me' searches for x2 of our services. We have 130+ stores throughout the UK and would like to rank if someone in i.e. Leeds was to search 'pawnbroker near me'. Please can you advise the best way to achieve this? Do I need to add scheme mark up? If so, does this go on the service page? Or do I need to place on individual store pages? Any help much appreciated! Kind regards, Jack

  • Hello, In the site crawl report we have a few pages that are status 430 - but that's not a valid HTTP status code. What does this mean / refer to?

  • I really need some major advice on this one. Back in September, I asked a question on here as follows: "A client wanted to change their domain name, which we have now done. The site content itself is exactly the same. We put 301 redirect links in so that Google searchers would redirect from the old site to the new one. However Moz then said that it couldn't crawl the old domain because of the redirects and advised creating a brand new campaign for the new domain. We have done this but now Moz says that the domain authority of the new site is 2 (it was 14 on the old domain)." My original question and the answers I got are here: https://moz.com/community/q/new-domain-wipes-out-domain-authority). Generally the responses I got were that we should give Moz time to crawl the new domain and process all the "new" pages. It is now February, ie 6 months after the domain rename, and on Moz the site still has a DA of 2. It seems like 6 months is enough time to wait. We checked all the recommended guides and believe we have done it all correctly. I really don't know what to do now. Can anyone help or have a quick look and work out why this is so bad? Specifics are:

In the last few months our team of data scientists have been hard at work developing an improvement to one of the favorite SEO metrics used in digital marketing: Domain Authority, also referred to as “DA.” On March 5, 2019, we’ll release the new and improved Domain Authority algorithm, which includes a number of new factors that make this score even more accurate, trustworthy, and predictive than ever before. Having worked with marketing clients in the past and reported on Domain Authority during monthly reviews, I wanted to make sure we give our community enough advance notice to understand what is changing, why it’s changing, and what it might mean for your reporting.  Sudden, unexpected fluctuations in any core metric you use in reporting have the potential to make your job more difficult, so we want to help you start the conversation about this change with your stakeholders. Let’s start with the “why” ... Why is Moz changing the DA algorithm? The Search Engine Results Page (SERP) is constantly changing. Rankings change and the algorithms that drive those rankings change. For Moz to ensure you have the most accurate prediction possible, it means we need to update our algorithm from time to time to ensure it delivers on its promise. You trust Moz, in part, because of the accuracy of the data we create. We want to make sure that we’re providing you with the best data to make your work easier. To ensure that DA continues to accurately predict ability of sites to rank, and to remain reliable over time, we’ve decided to make some improvements. What can I expect from the DA algorithm update? Many sites should expect to see a change to their current Domain Authority score. Depending on the site, this change might be insignificant, but it’s possible the new algorithm will cause material adjustments. The new Domain Authority takes into consideration a number of additional factors, such as link pattern identification and Moz’s Spam Score metric, to help you deploy your SEO strategy. Is Domain Authority an absolute score or a relative one? Domain Authority is a relative, comparative metric. Moz evaluates over 5 trillion pages and greater than 35 trillion links to inform Domain Authority. Your site’s links are evaluated amongst those trillions of links. Because of this, it is important to compare your DA to your competition, peers, and other sites that show up in search results important to your strategy. In terms of how to use Domain Authority, nothing is changing. If you use it to evaluate domains to purchase, it will function exactly the same. If you use it to find hidden keyword ranking opportunities, it will still be your best friend. It’s the same trusty tool you used before — we just sharpened for you. I saw a change to my DA when Link Explorer launched last April. What’s the difference between that change and this one? In April 2018, Moz released its new link index along with its new research tool, Link Explorer. Because the link index was so much larger than the previous index, and because Domain Authority is based on attributes discovered in that index, scores changed. Any changes that occurred were due to the upgrade of that link index, not how the algorithm calculated scores. The change coming in March 2019 will be an actual algorithm update to how Domain Authority is calculated. How will Page Authority (PA) be affected by this update? Page Authority will not be impacted by the March 2019 update. This particular algorithm update is specific to Domain Authority only. Will API users be affected at the same time? Yes. The Domain Authority metric in all of our products, including our API, will be affected by this update on March 5th.   • Hi Moz Community, I've newly started using Google's search console on a regular basis, and I have a query about the results coming from the platform. For example, I added this article URL to the console with field "URL containing" and "URL exact", and the results showed 71 clicks and 436 impressions over 12 months. However, when looking at the queries that show in the results to see where the clicks are coming from, all of them state there's no clicks from the dozen or so queries that show. Am I doing something wrong here? Is there a field I need to fill in to show more results/top results? I've tested a few article URL's and the same has happened. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Hi, I am working on a large global site which has around 9 different language variations. We have setup the hreflang tags and referenced the corresponding content as follows: (We have not implemented a version X-default reference, as we felt it was not necessary) Using DeepCrawl and Search Console, we can see that these language variations are causing duplicate title issues. Many of them. My assumption was that the hreflang would have alleviated this issue and informed Google what is going on, however i wanted to see if anyone has any experience with this kind of thing before. It would be good to understand what the best practice approach is to deal with the problem. Is it even an issue at all, or just the tools being over-sensitive? Thank you in advance.

  • Hello all, Just a couple notes first. I have been advised to be vague on the search term we've dropped on (in case this page ranks higher than our homepage for it). If you search for my name in Google though you should be able to figure out where I work (I'm not the soccer player). While I am looking for an answer, I've also posted this question on a couple other forums (see https://www.webmasterworld.com/google/4934323.htm and https://productforums.google.com/forum/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=footer#!msg/webmasters/AQLD7lywuvo/2zfFRD6oGAAJ) which have thrown up more questions than answers. So I have posted this as a discussion. We've also been told we may have been under a negative SEO attack. We saw in SEMRush a large number of backlinks in October/November/December - at about the same time we disavowed around 1m backlinks (more on this below) but we can't see this reflected in Moz. We just got off a call with someone at Moz to try and work this out and he suggested we post here - so here goes... On 4th October for the search term 'example-term' we dropped from number 2 to number 9 on Google searches (this was confirmed in Google Search Console). We also paid an external SEO consultant to review our site and see why we are dropping on the term 'example-term'. We've implemented everything and we're still dropping, the consultant thinks we may have been penalised in error (as we are a legitimate business and we're not trying to do anything untoward). In search console you could see from the graphs on the term we used to rank 1st and 2nd (you could go back 2 or 3 years and still see this). The thing we do find confusing is that we still rank very highly (if not 1st) for 'example-term + uk' and our brand name - which is very similar to 'example-term'. Timeline of events of changes: 2nd October 2018 midday: Added a CTA using something called Wisepops over the homepage - this was a full screen CTA for people to pledge on a project on our site helping with the tsunami in Indonesia (which may have had render blocking elements on). 4th October: we added a Google MyBusiness page showing our corporate headquarters as being in the UK (we did flag this on the Google MyBusiness forums and both people who responded said adding a MyBusiness page would not affect our drop in rankings). 4th October: dropped from number 2 to number 9 on Google searches (this was confirmed in Google Search Console) 4th October: Removed the Wisepops popup 5th November: Server redirect so anything coming in on / was redirected to a page without a / 12th November: Removed around 200 junk pages (so old pages, test cms pages etc that were live and still indexed). Redirects from any 404s resolved 19th November: Updated site maps and video site maps to reflect new content and remove old content. Reviewed the whole site for duplicate meta tags and titles and updated accordingly with unique ones. Fixed issues in Google Search Console for Google search console for 404 and Mobile usability. Removed embedded YouTube video from homepage. 11th December: Removed old content and content seen as not useful from indexing; 'honey pot' pages, old blog, map pages, user profile pages, project page ‘junk pages which have little SEO value’ (comments, contact project owner, backers, report project) from indexing, added ‘no-follow’ to widgets linking back to us 3rd January 2019: Changed the meta title from to remove 'example-term' (we were concerned it may have been seen as keyword stuffing) 7th January: Disavow file updated to refuse a set of external sites powered by API linking to us (these were sites like example-term.externalsite.co.uk which used to link to us showing projects in local areas - our SEO expert felt may be seen as a ‘link farm’) 11th January: Updated our ‘About us’ page with more relevant content 15th January: Changed homepage title to include 'example-term' again, footer links updated to point to internal pages rather than linking off to Intercom, homepage ordering of link elements on homepage changed (so moving external rating site link further down the page, removing underlines on one item that was not a link, fixed and instance where two h1 tags were used), removed another set of external Subdomains (i.e. https://externalsite.sitename.co.uk) from our system (these were old sites we used to run for different clients which has projects in geographical areas displayed) 18th January: Added the word 'example-term' to key content pages We're at a loss as to why we are still dropping. Please note that the above changes were implemented after we'd been ranking fine for a couple years on the 'example-term' - the changes were to try and address the drop in ranking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello everyone! I hope an expert in this community can help me verify the canonical codes I'll add to our store is correct. Currently, in our Shopify store, the subsequent pages in the collections are not indexed by Google, however the canonical URL on these pages aren't pointing to the main collection page (page 1), e.g. The canonical URL of page 2, page 3 etc are used as canonical URLs instead of the first page of the collections. I have the canonical codes attached below, it would be much appreciated if an expert can urgently verify these codes are good to use and will solve the above issues?   • I have a client with a blog setup on their domain (example: blog.clientwebsite.com) and even though it loads at that subdomain it's actually a Wordpress-hosted blog. If I attempt to add a plugin like Yoast SEO, I get the attached error message. Their technical team says this is a brick wall for them and they don't want to change how the blog is hosted. So my question is... on a subdomain blog like this... if I can't control what is in the sitemap with a plugin and can't manually add a sitemap because the content is being pulled from a Wordpress-hosted install, what can I do to control what is in the index? I can't add an SEO plugin... I can't add a custom sitemap... I can't add a robots.txt file... The blog is setup with domain mapping so the content isn't actually there. What can I do to avoid tags, categories, author pages, archive pages and other useless content ending up in the search engines? 7Zo93b2.png

  • There's a domain name (we will call it A) with no domain authority that is currently forwarded to a domain with 36 DA (we will call this domain B). B has been dormant for about two years. I am getting both domains, but domain A works better for what I will be using it for. So basically, I want to swap things around so B forwards to A, instead of A forwarding to B. Any dangers here or things to consider that I may be overlooking?

  • Hi, I've seen a fair amount of topics speaking about the difference between domain names ending with or without trailing slashes, the impact on crawlers and how it behaves with canonical links.
    However, it sticks to domain names only.
    What about subfolders and pages then? How does it behaves with those? Say I've a site structured like this:
    https://www.domain.com
    https://www.domain.com/page1 And for each of my pages, I've an automatic canonical link ending with a slash.
    Eg. rel="canonical" href="https://www.domain.com/page1/" /> for the above page. SEM Rush flags this as a canonical error. But is it exactly?
    Are all my canonical links wrong because of that slash? And as subsidiary question, both domain.com/page1 and domain.com/page1/ are accessible. Is it this a mistake or it doesn't make any difference (I've read that those are considered different pages)? Thanks!

  • At Magnet.me we are using Intercom to communicate with our users. This means that we are actively adding javascript code which will load the Intercom javascript on each page, and render the button afterwards. However, this button has no value for crawlers, and slows the page down as the javascript is big and fairly slow. Therefore I considered to ship some code which disables this button, such that performance would improve. To give a ball pack estimate, the buttons javascript is around 3x bigger than the actual entire react application... Unfortunately this would result in giving users and crawlers slightly different content on the page. I'm unsure about the possible SEO impact: Would Google mark the page as faster due to less resources to load? Or would it penalize the page for showing slightly different content to users and search engines?

  • In the Moz Search Visibility graph, how are a clients competitor companies calculated? Where is this information gathered from? We add the clients GA account to the campaign, not the competitors.

  • This is the second time I have posted this question and never got a satisfactory result. I have an SEO client in Tacoma Wa and when you type (Dispensaries Near Tacoma they are in the Top 3 snack pack and the Google maps shows 20 other similar businesses. However, when you search (Dispensary Near Tacoma) only 3 or 5 recreational marijuana shops show up and my client disappears. Someone earlier suggested it could be because of the categories selection, but that can't affect ALL the other shops and like I said it happens in other cities. for example Dispensary Near Olympia vs Dispensaries Near Olympia.  I have the full write up and pictures and diagrams on my blog.   • We are at a loss. We have been following Google Pagespeed Insights which gives us horrible marks. Nothing we do seems to really make a difference. GTMetrix and Pingdom give us much better scores. We don't know what to do...

  • Hi, Can you please advise? We have been focusing on the UK traffic, but this year we are expanding to all English speaking countries, primarily focusing on the US market. Our SEO efforts are not equally fruitful in the US, but they are really good in the UK. Can you please suggest what seriously impacts rank these days? our main domain that we use in the UK is domain.com. The US version uses sub-directory domain.com/us. Is this a problem? we have about 3 times more traffic from the UK than the US, and we have only UK backlinks. Do they still impact SEO significantly? can our poor US rank be related simply to a larger market? Any ideas on how we can improve?
