E Commerce Blogging
-
I have an E commerce site that I want to boost search rank for. I had taken some else's advice and created a wp blog on a different url then created content around the products we offer and linked back to the main site using the specific keyword in anchor text.
I just joined seomoz earlier this month. It seems like the main consensus here as far to install the blog in the domain.com/blog and I just did that. So now when I create content for that blog should I just link back to the specific categories and or products then? Should I be aware of duplicate content issues? So if the product is widgets and I am talking about widgets in the blog, or blog title, could they be competing or helping the main URL?

There are many routes you can take with your new blog to drive traffic.
One of the most cost and time effective strategies is to determine your most effective keywords. These are ones that are driving traffic and sales to your site already.
If these phrases are low on the first page of results, or on the second page AND sending you leads, these are the phrases to target first in a blog post to get them higher in the search results.
The duplicate content will only happen if you copy exact product descriptions from the main part of the site onto the blog. As for categories vs. products, it really depends on your top keywords and your goals. If you are in a micro niche, it may be better to lean towards products.
Don't let these choices freeze you up, though. Make related original content as you flesh out a plan and stay consistent!

**It seems like the main consensus here as far to install the blog in the domain.com/blog and I just did that. **
Nice!
So now when I create content for that blog should I just link back to the specific categories and or products then?
If you blog about a product or a category of products it is appropriate to link straight to them.
However, instead of worrying about where you are linking, I think it would be a better idea to put as much effort as possible into creating content that will be shared, remembered and subscribed to.
Share = inspire others to tweet, like, email, link
Remember = bookmarks that will be used
Subscribed to = rss and email subscriptions to your blog feed
Should I be aware of duplicate content issues?
Absolutely.
**So if the product is widgets and I am talking about widgets in the blog, or blog title, could they be competing or helping the main URL? **
BOTH
The links from your blog to the product page will give a very small amount of help.
However, it is not a sin to make a blog post that is so interesting, funny, or informative that it generates so much sharing that it competes with your product page. I my opinion that makes you a huge success. And... contrary to what some people say it is not a "problem".... the problem that you have in that situation is to then drive that traffic to your product page... or bring product purchasing opportunities directly to the content page.

How to find out related keywords? e.g. business = commercial
I'm trying to get savvy with our homepage H1. Is there a website which can give us information on related keywords. For example, although we don't mention 'business', we do mention 'commercial' and thus our site will come up in search for the term 'business <x><x>'.</x></x> So in essence, there's little point keywording both 'business' and 'commercial' as to Google they are one in the same keyword. Thanks

Use Nonindex or Canonical on product tags of a e-commerce site
I run a e-commerce site and we have many product tags. These product tags come up as "Duplicate Page Content" when Moz does it's crawl. I was wondering if I should use Nonindex or Canonical? The tags all go to the same product when used so I figure I would just nonindex them but was wondering what's the best for SEO?

What is the best practice for URLs for E-commerce products in multiple categories?
Hello all! I have always worked successfully with SEO on E-commerce sites, however we are currently revamping an older site for a client and so I thought I'd turn to the community to ask what the best practices that you guys are experiencing for url structures at the moment. Obviously we do not wish to create duplicate content and so the big question is, what would you guys do for the very best structure for URLs on an E-commerce site that has products in multiple categories? Let's imagine we are selling toy cars. I have a sports car for sale, so naturally it can go in the sports cars category and it could also go in to the convertibles category too. What is the best way you have found recently that works and increases rankings, but does not create duplicate content? Thanks in advance! 🙂 Kind Regards, JDM

MOZ crawl report says category pages blocked by meta robots but theyr'e not?
I've just run a SEOMOZ crawl report and it tells me that the category pages on my site such as http://www.top-10-dating-reviews.com/category/online-dating/ are blocked by meta robots and have the meta robots tag noindex, follow. This was the case a couple of days ago as I run wordpress and am using the SEO Category updater plugin. By default it appears it makes categories noindex, follow. Therefore I edited the plugin so that the default was index, follow as I want google to index the category pages so that I can build links to them. When I open the page in a browser and view source the tags show as index, follow which adds up. Why then is the SEOMOZ report telling me they are still noindex, follow? Presumably the crawl is in real time and should pick up the new follow tag or is it perhaps because its using data from an old crawl? As yet these pages aren't indexed by google. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks Sam.

I need some blogging advice please!
My name is Matthew and I am a new PRO member and founder of my own Internet marketing company in KS. So far I love the interaction and tools and functionality of seomoz. I am a true student of seo and love the subject. My dilemma is I know a blog is an important piece of any good seo campaign but I know very little about HOW to blog well......this is my new site and blog page. I only have a couple articles so far but many more planned. http://sawwebmarketing.com/seo-blog/ When I read an article that would be particuarly beneficial for my visitors can i post or share that on MY blog (giving the author the credit of course) without google thinking its duplicate content? is there anything specific I need to do with my blog for google to "see" the new, fresh content that is being added to the site? I have seen "tagged" items at the bottom of some blogs. Is this important? Some blogs will have a word or string of 2-3 words that are a link to a specific website. Does this help me or just them or just people reading the blog? **All I know is articles I write need to be relevant to my site and interesting and ORIGINAL and of benefit to my site visitors. ** Any advice that would help insure my blog articles get me all the juice they can would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you in advance! Matthew ps - my site only went live a couple days ago so I am still working on a few onpage items but ANY feedback about the site itself would be spectacular! Have a GREAT weekend!
