How many keywords / phrases can you SEO for?
-
Might sound like a bit of a daft question to you pro's but here it goes...
I am been doing in house SEO for a company for a short while and since I have been managing it things have moved quickly in the right direction but I find myself limiting our SEO efforts to three key terms. Is this usual?
The reason I am doing this is because I find that on page SEO is only really possible with those amount of terms (with regards to title, description, key word density, seo copy, on page links etc).
I guess that what I trying to stay is:
- If I push on page opitimastion to more key terms will it be detrimantal to our current efforts?
and
- Is SEO possible for additional key phrases which are not on page optimised?
-
Don't change the keywords targeted on the homepage. If you're wanting extra keywords then you need extra pages that are optimised for those keywords.

Thanks for the response, I guess it answers my question in the way that if we want to rank for more key phrases we use a page specifically for the new key terms and SEO that as we have done with the home page.
I know the one page per search term is the general SEO rule and I agree with it, however I have got us from page 3 to page 1 top 5 for 3 very competitive key terms and I am afraid if I optimise the homepage on just one of these terms and 'move' (on page optimise) the other two terms on new pages then we would loose the ranking of these on the main page?
P.S. Thanks Elias for your response too. I guess the same questions apply.

It's time to work on lading pages and getting some new links.

Hello,
It really depends on what the keywords are to be honest. If the keywords are just variations of the same e.g. caravan insurance and touring caravan insurance then yes it is possible. Although, I always feel it is better to create a dedicated page for each if possible.
Other than that I think you would struggle and could end up not ranking well for all your target keywords on that page as opposed to ranking well for just one.
If the keywords are completely different it may warrant a dedicated landing page for each. You've got to be careful not to duplicate any content though!
I hope this helps. Let me know if you want me to expand on anything.

You typically optimize 1 page for 1 phrase. If there are two phrases very close together, like 'widget' and 'widgets' then you can optimize the same page for those 2 phrases. You will have sub-optimal results if you try to rank the same page for 3 or more (or even 2) phrases.
If you have 40 phrases you want to rank for in the SERPs then you'll need 40 different pages on your site. Build a spreadsheet where you map 1 url to 1 phrase to help you keep it straight.

Can you use multiple keywords for on page for ranking?
I understand using a keyword (or phrase) and correctly building that into the site structure (URL, Title Tag, body, etc). So, this question is going to be elementary, but I am starting to question myself as I write content. I have a client, for example, that has a new site and a page for Chocolate cakes. Now the other pages they built out are for Cheesecakes, Cupcakes, etc. So we optimized the Chocolate cakes page with our keyword throughout (Getting an A+ on page content grade). But now they are asking me why they can't be found for chocolate eclairs, chocolate fudge cake, devils chocolate cake, double chocolate cake, etc. My first quick answer is that they should build more pages. But am I doing this wrong?

Fewer keywords in title tag?
Hello, I have a title tag that includes three keywords and has a total of 59 characters. The third keyword is not very important. If I eliminated the third keyword, leaving the first two (for a total of 48 characters), would the ranking value of the first two keywords increase? Does including the third keyword dilute the value of the first two? Thank you!

SEO for Image only posts
Let's say I have a post where I show 25 different wood textures. I start the post with a small paragraph and then I show several images of wood textures linked to an internal or external page. Since I don't use a text link, then I have to rely on alt tags. It would be very difficult to assign a different alt tag to so many similar images, and I guess there would be a risk of keyword stuffing (walnut wood, oak wood, etc). On the other side, if I assign the same tag to all images, then that clearly is keyword stuffing (alt=wood textures). This is just an example, but it applies to most of my posts. What do you think I should do with the alt tags? Thanks!

Should you try to rank for misspelled keywords?
Hi there, 2 part question: Is it best practice to try to rank for misspelled keywords that bring in lots of traffic or should you instead just try to rank for the correct spelling of that keyword and hope that you rank better on the misspelling as an indirect result? E.G. The misspelled keyword "Hamilton island accomodation" is a common misspelling that brings in traffic but we have an "F" rank for that term (obviously because we spell accommodation correctly on our site). We don't want to misspell anything but are there techniques to rank better for misspellings that won't hurt content quality? The On-Page Optimization tool says that our website doesn't rank in the top 50 on Google Aus for "Accomodation Hamilton Island" or "Hamilton Island Accomodation" but when i do a manual search, we actually are the first result. Is this an error with the On-Page optimization tool? Thanks!

Can embedding videos from other sites help SEO?
I work for an eCommerce site and many of the vendors we get our products from have videos our their site that explain how the products work and the different features of them, ect. We really have done nothing with video marketing, and would like to create some of our own unique videos, but this will be impossible for the vast majority of the products on our site. We know from a content standpoint embedding videos from our vendors to our product pages will be beneficial, but at the same time it shows our competitors and other site visitors where we are getting our products from which we would rather not do. How will this effect us from an SEO standpoint though? Will it help us to have new content, even though it is embedded from another site? Or will it hurt us because it is not unique? Or will it have no effect at all? Thanks for you help!

Continuous variation of a keyword
Lords, on a site i have optimization job, a specific keyword, for over 5 months, ranging from 7 to +100 position. One day the keyword is there, beautiful on the first page, and another day disappear. I do not understand why this happens, someone has something happened? I can not stabilize it, and is one of the most important for this client. I live in tension, in the morning the first thing I do is search to see whether the keyword is. Obviously it did in the first 2 months, then relaxed as she always comes back : ) Anyone have any idea what might be happening?
