5 websites, 1 root domain name: good or bad?
-
Hi guys, I'm new here, so this might be a basic question to the experts here!
So here is my situation: I have 1 "umbrella" website (root domain name) that contains 4 different websites, for a total of 5 different websites. They are related, but we needed to brand each website differently to fit each strategy.
Q: I have 23 domain names.. this means I have 23 sub-domain names?
Q: Is this practice good or bad for my SEO?
Q: should I analyze each domain name/SD?Here are my 5 websites
RD: furisgreen.com
SD1: furcouncil.com
SD2: furfashions.com
SD3: naffem.com
SD4: beautifullycanadian.comThank you for your help!!

Hey MarieAnne,
ok, so you got 5 different designs for your page and more domainnames that you want to point to one of your designs. This is perfectly ok, you should only watch a few things.
I made a quick check on canadafur.com. It does not redirect with a 301 statuscode, but with a 302 (temp redirect), you should change that to 301 here is more on statuscodes: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/http-status-codes
I also noticed, that furcouncil.com does not have a rel canonical. This is optional, but in a scenario you are describing it realy gives you security not make a mistak. What you should do is: rel="canonical" href="http: yourdomainhere.tld/page" /> in the header of each of your pages. This will tell the searchengines that yourdomainhere.tld/page is the version you want to display and what they should index and rank.
Why to do this? If you screw up one of the redirects it could happen that the exactly same page is one time crawled and indexed on yourdomain and one time on anotherdomain, thus creating duplicate content.More on that topic:

If this helped and answered your question I would be very thankful if you flag this answer as helpful If you have more questions just ask or PM
Thanks
Sebastian

Hi, thanks for helping me out here!
So for example, for my website www.furcouncil.com, I also have the domain name www.furcouncil.ca, www.canadafur.com, www.fourrurecanada.com.. they are all redirected to to the same page, or sometimes to the french version of the website. (I don't know if that counts as 301'd)?
My 4 visually look like different websites, but are really under the the root domain name furisgreen.com. I take care of updating the websites with a CMS, that's why I am starting to learn about SEO...
Hope this helps... I'm making a lot of research on the subject!
Thanks! ;)) -
Hi there Jacky_C, I'm a bit confused on your question here.
Would you please clarify if your 23 domain names are active/live and whether they are 301'd from the original root domain or are these 5 domains leading into the 23 domain names?
Also the 4 subdomains are individual sites, correct? If not, then your 4 subdomains should be "furcouncil.furisgreen.com", "furfrashions.furisgreen.com", etc.
I'll touch base later and good luck!

Complete redesign of website and 301 redirects
I did a complete redesign and content change for my website. I have my new webpages indexed but they still haven't replaced the old ones after 1 month. In search results I see both the old ones and the news ones. How long of a delay should I expect (approximately) for the old pages to be replaced by the new ones knowing the entire website was changed. Thank you,

Duplicate Blog pages across different domains
Hey Moz Community, I have 3 Duplicate websites which more or less contain the same blog article ( they are copy & paste from the original website ). I am now in the process of changing my duplicate websites and I stumbled upon this problem: if I have to change the content for all the duplicate articles I have across my different domains it would be a very time consuming task and on the other hand I don't want to no index, follow the duplicate articles because I want to use them for SEO purposes. Should I only change the articles that brought significant traffic and no index, follow the rest ? What do you think ? Thanks, Anddrei

Are Bullet Points Bad For Context?
Cyrus' webinar yesterday got me thinking about the use of bullet points and Google's increasing affection for context and semantics. Because of their brevity, I can see bullet points parsing up context/semantics etc. Some of our competitors (apparently trying to appeal to Google) are writing 2-4 sentences about the product in the desciption section followed by bullet points repeating the same information. They'll also put a few sentences of description at the top of the page above the price and then repeat it below in the description (this is relatively common). I put text in the description section and like bullet points as a shopper because I can quickly and easily see important information - therefore I use them heavily in product descriptions. Is Google smart enough process bullet points and mash together context or would Google prefer content in well written sentences? Should I be frying bigger fish?

Title Tag and Company Name
Hello everyone! The company I work for has an e-commerce site that needs to be optimized. I am starting from the title tags which are too long and need optimized for specific keywords. Thing is that each title tag contains the specific keywords for the page and the company name. My question is should I keep the company name within the title tags or should I just keep the keywords I target for those pages? How will it affect my rank? Cheers Oscar

Mega Menus? A good or bad idea for link juice.
Hi Just wondering what people think of using mega menus for navigation? We have used them on our new site http://nicontrols.com/uk/ When I run the site through the excellent SEOMoz campaign tools I see that we have too many on page links. I now believe the menu is good for customers but maybe not for link juice. Anyone got an ideas? Do I remove the mega menu or just reduce the number of links? Many thanks David

Multi-language on multiple domain
Hi, One of my clients has a big duplicate content issue on his site. He has two domain, on for each language (FR and EN) but each domain propose the two languages! Meaning you can reach every page with two URL. Example: http://www.brand-realestate.com/en/luxury/index.html (home page of the default site in english)
On-Page Optimization | | Pherogab
http://www.immobilier-brand.com/en/luxury/index.html (home page of the default site in french after clicking on the english link) Each of the two site has a default language and a link to the other one. When you click the link the page you are on just refresh and the URL stay the same with an added language parameter (ie:http://www.immobilier-brand.com/luxe/index.html?lang=english), then all the link in the navigation switch to the other language. So my question is, is it better to: Keep the two domain and instead of having the two languages on each send the traffic to the domain which has the targeted language by default (on the right page of course) Have both language on one domain and redirect all the pages from the other domain to this one (each page to the corresponding one) Just add a canonical URL on each alternative version of each domain Let me know if I'm clear. Thanks for the help. GaB0 -
Exact Match Domains
Hi All Which strategy from below would be best for the purchase of an exact match domain... 1) www.shiny-blue-widgets.com 2) wwwshinybluewidgetsshop.com Wondered if there was much difference in either as I know both have plus and minus points.
