SEOMoz bar shows competitors ranking higher in SERPS with less Moztrust and Mozrank?
-
We are targeting the term "wholesale fireworks" we are currently on page two and just completed some on page optimization. I noticed using the Mozbar that the SERP results on the first page show a site with near zero page rank, Moztrust, domain trust, etc.. It is steadily number two in SERPS. Our site is just as strong or stronger on these ratings as anyone on the first page. How is it possible that we are still hanging out on page 2?

I am not a big fan of using pagerank, moztrust, domain trust, etc to decide why a site is beating me. Google uses a couple hundred factors and these look at just a few.
Tossing that aside, here is what my site would look like if I was in your space.
It would look like the competitor that you are complainin' about.
When a person lands on the site their face is SLAPPED with "Firecrackers"..... "Missles".... "Sparklers"........ ALLLLL of that stuff that gets a fireworks guy's blood pumping. YES... these guys have what I need! And google sees that they have all of this stuff... every freeking thing that a fireworks guy would search for... right out there in front and center.... one click away. Awesome!
What they would not see... A bigass image that google probably doesn't read..... two huge paragraphs of corporate chest thumping... and bunch of news that very few people care about.
Links to the blog all have same text... blog content is really thin.... it's over at blogspot!. Do you think people are really watching those videos? I don't.
Just saying what I think and what I would do. Trying to be really honest.
Your competitor puts what the visitor wants right in his face... you have what he wants but its buried.
If I owned your site I would dump the homepage and put the catalog page in its place.... but my catalog page would have a LOT more content. A LOT.
If you do that, I still doubt that you will jump up and beat the #2 site. I am betting that they have some good things going for them that are not in the PR, MT and DT metrics.

Shortened URL showing as linking page
I'm using Open Site Explorer to look at backlinks and referring pages to my site. I'm seeing 3 links coming from http://j.mp/XXXXXX (not actual link) which is a bitly shortened URL. It shows as a 301 redirect, and I'm trying to figure out if there is any way to find where that link is originating from? When I try to search for the exact j.mp url in google it brings up one result which is the page the link redirects to. Any Ideas? Thanks a lot.

Site Ranking for keywords that they haven't targeted in content
There is a site that I am constantly battling for the #1 spot for a particular keyword and I can't see that they are doing any link building, they are not using any anchor text for the keyword "at all" just their company name (not exact match) and their content doesn't even contain the keyword. I used Open site explorer to analyze their activity, but they are doing something I can't figure out from that data. Any other tools to use? I have higher quality links than them, post content nearly 5 times per week to my blog and their blog hasn't been updated in ages, I kill them in social media, there isn't one instance that they are better than my site and I only build quality driven links, no blog comment crap and get featured on lots of industry blogs for our work. I distribute my content very effectively, I just can't figure it out. They were no where about 5 months ago now they are tearing it up for lots of keywords in the industry top spots. I can build a few links and surpass them, but I have to do it every week or so and I think they are doing something fishy. I just want to figure out what they are doing and bury them. I don't want to post their url and mine here as I don't want them to see this post in search results.

Competitor analysis
Hi This is obviously a well worn question (I've read the great blog by Sam Crocker last year - see below), but I'm looking for an updated set of opinions on sources of competitor data. The competitor data I'm interested in is traffic volumes either aggregated or disaggregated by referral source (i.e. organic search, PPC, email, social etc.). The types of data I've checked so far are Google Trends for websites (no disaggregation), Alexa (some good sources of free data) and Experian's Hitwise (too expensive for my current needs). In addition I'm aware that Compete will be providing an interface for such data in the UK in January at reasonable rates for what I'm after. I'm interested in views on these and other sources in relation to experience of their relative accuracy, costs, pros, con etc. Ideally I'm looking for something that is free, comprehensive, and is not being used by the competition - is that too much to ask!!! 😉 Any inputs would be greatly appeciated. Thanks in advance! Neil Sam's great blog: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/monitor-competitor-traffic

Thanks David

Whats the best way to see why your competitor is out ranking you?
I am trying to rank in the number on position for Part Time CFO. Currently we are in 2nd and 3rd. We have way more quality inbound links then the site in first position, more content etc. How would you go about investigating why they are ahead of us?
