Will Search Engines implement timestamps?
-
We continuously receive comments on our partners' websites which are obviously spam from a third world country trying to build backlinks that some SEO firm outsourced.
Out of curiosity, and what I've added to my prayers at night is for the search engines to apply an algorithm update to discredit comments posted under a certain time frame to help identify spam, and these garbage practices. Do you think something like this would happen?
My most important thought is...how can we compete with companies that are doing these practices trying to get that quick buck? Look, we want to play the game with the highest ethics and morals and not "cheat" the system because we know a "work around".
Thoughts...

You have to deprogram the "bath room wall" their reading out there in Internetland. Been there. Done that. lol
Content marketing is probably the most effective from what I've seen. That's for sure.

Well 10 more minutes, then I am off from the office (and available on seoMoz in like 2 hours, again :-D)

I guess it is what it is. It gives us a better opportunity for sure. Just don't like the negativity it gives to those clients about our industry.
Talk to you later. Now get back to work!

Great!
With most of my sites, I have a very strong interest in the subject of the site and I put an extra amount of time into making nice content. I am sure that if I kept track of my time it would be quite expensive - but in the long-run I believe that I get my money back in better rankings.
If I was doing SEO for clients it would be hard to convince them to make the same large investment up front.

Thanks EGOL! We are already seeing the effects of our better quality work. I guess I'm just venting. Thanks for helping me regain focus on what matters. I just need to ignore those bad practices, and not let it take so much energy away. Thanks again.

Well, all I can do is hope. This is why we invest a lot of energy in online marketing and not in cheating with black hats
I saw a lot of SEO agencies go up with clients on the wrong way, then after few months falling back. Then we speak of a loss-loss situation:
- the agency lost the client, because of their negative strategy
- the client lost energy and money
I am always trying to practice what I preach, and try to deliver the clients goals in front of me. Unfortunately we are all not the same.
There are unfortunately link builders who would be very good (and it would be good to invest in them) BUT they gain contracts where some agency outsources in them with contracts like $2/100 links. I don't wonder they spam us all. And don't even blame them (because all they do is work how they were learned too). I blame those agencies, project managers who apply these standards for their freelancers.

Thanks Istvan for commenting and reassuring good always wins in the end!

I am with EGOL, unfortunately there are a lot of comment spammers, and what you can do, is just to simple delete all the time the spam comments, or don't allow any comments.
Regarding competing with these guys, I would say, that until you play fair one day it will pay out. Google, Bing and other search engines too are working hard on competing with spam and "delivering best results". Until you, I or anyone else really focuses this, I wouldn't be much worried regarding these low quality companies. There will be always some who think they can earn fast money, without putting anything on the table. But these guys will raise and fall... again-again-and-again, but those who "play fair" will remain up constantly.
These are my thoughts, I know it is kind of idealistic....

I don't allow comments on my websites because I don't want to spend a lot of time deleting the marketing spam and deciding what to do with the political folks and crackpots who would also be posting. That decision costs me a lot of great user-generated content but I am OK with that.
My most important thought is...how can we compete with companies that are doing these practices trying to get that quick buck?
I honestly don't worry about these guys because I don't think that their methods are extremely effective. In other words, once you have done enough work to get above them they are off of your radar and don't bother you anymore. So, just keep working until you have them beat and your mind will move on to other things.

How does nudity on a site affect search results?
One of my clients sells lingerie and with it being lingerie there are a fair few photos of bottoms and some exposed breasts. Gosh. Anyway I know how this affects Adwords campaigns - Google classifies the site as 'adult' and your ads don't show anywhere. I also know how it affects image searches. However how does it affect text seaches?? Are rankings demoted because of nudity? I've worked with a clothing site with some nudity on it before and this didn't affect it, but would love to hear from anyone with specific experience of thisThanks

Does Google still have a standard search result? How can I get it?
I have heard a lot from the experts that there are no "Standard" Google search results anymore. They said that most of the SERP's of Google that show up are customized/tailored for each individuals even if they are not logged-in using their Google Custom Search. My questions are, Is there still a way to retrieve the standard Google search result? How? Are these scripts will be helpful when searching on Google? *webhp?

Google Search Quality Team - Commission Based Reviews
I have been busy this past week writing articles for various sources about the recent update on Google. A number of people contacted me about the analysis I was doing and the report. Some were members of the Google Search Quality Team. I knew manual reports were done before - but after the documents they showed me regarding the reports they do and the compensation for doing the reports - I am left in a state of being pretty shocked. May be I have been naive for all these years but I didn't realize that; Google outsourced the review and reconsideration requests to individual reviewers for a compensation Google's position in terms of checking qualification and experience of these "reviewers" was very insufficient at best, The three contacts I spoke to who had done reports had very little training or experience. I went through the GSQT REVIEWERS PDF (a very long and thorough document) that I was sent - with them. We went together through some sites I wanted them to review and their comments that came back were quite astounding to say the least and would have made many of you Mozzers laugh. Obviously I don't want to post said document online here.... BUT, I wanted to know if: a) any Mozzers had ever been part of such a group - the GSQT b) had any dealings with them - in terms of having your website reviewed and known about it. I knew about this group way back - like in 2005 or 2006 or sometime around then - I was told at time it was stopped and Google had stopped paying these sub contractor reviewers. Please don't get me wrong here... totally on board with manual reviews... I would just prefer them done by a trained team that possibly worked for either a professional company that maintain high quality review testing and standards - or for that matter GOOGLE employees that were trained. I just am a little unsure of them being done by individual subbies that get paid for the amount they do. What if that subbie has got some skin in the game for a particular keyword? What if their knowledge about certain aspects isn't up to par or not tested on a regular basis. This space is always changing and as you guys ./ girls on this forum know - it can change pretty quick. I just would want all websites to be judged fairly and equally by a group trained EQUALLY and to the same standards. I don't care if this is a G team or not - I just want it to be a team that is trained equally and trained continuously as opposed to paying outside people based on numbers of reviews done. When the livelihood of a small business is the balance I don't want a commission hungry toe rag with one years experience being the gate keeper for me or any of our clients. Carlos

Hreview marked snippets are displayed in a new way in search results!
Getting our reviews to show in the serps is starting to become a crusade 😞 After 6 months of submitting our Hreview marked up content, Google responded with that we had a hidden div within the marked up content, to rectify and then resubmit, which we did. 4 months on, we haven't heard anything, and still no sign of our reviews showing up in the search results until today I noticed we now have a review link in the search results (or see attached see image). It's not quite what I was after, so is this Google experimenting? Have we marked something up wrong? Or do we just have to be more patient, so our listing is presented the same as everyone else, such as Qype, Touch, Yelp etc? Seems to be a very painful process! So any pointers very gratefully received 🙂 review-results.gif
