SEO for a starter
-
Hi
I operate in a rather competitive market (IT and project management related training), and my focus is the UK market. I've recently started focussing on SEO. I have been creating content, albeit slowly. I have completed writing a book on my target subject, which is due to go out in a couple of weeks (I've received very positive feedback so far). And I have a decent PPC campaign.
To get to decent ranking on Google etc., my plan is
1. Focussing on quality content and publishing on my site (I have about 15-20 articles in the pipeline). Reaching out for guess posts is next, but creating this much content is hard.
2. Get external SEO help for link building and off-page SEO. This is somewhat confusing for me, as I've got offers ranging from blog posts, BMR etc. I have some budget for this, but don't exactly know what to target.
3. Gradual focus on on-page optimisation.
I haven't done anything on social front, on FB, Twritter. I do have a solid LinkedIn profile (personal).
I have one full time resource available to help me out.
What should I focus on? What am I missing?
Cheers.

Hi Feneris,
Were these answers enough to get you started, or are you still looking for some more advice? We'd love to have you check in and know how things are going for you. Thanks!

Feneris,
Any plan requires first knowing where you are. You state you have a decent ppc campaign, but do not state anything about your website. How is it ranked, type, etc. When I read your plan for ranking on Google, I first see you are focusing on content: is the site new? If so, How many pages? Architecture is flat - 2 to 3 clicks to anywhere? Keywords are good to go and you are ranking for at least some of them?
If not ranking for keywords or no kw analysis yet, I would take a step back and focus on site map as it applies to visitors coming to the site and do keyword analysis prior to the content. Believe me I am sure you know your subject, but my experience is everytime I do keyword analysis I am amazed at the way people search differently than me. An example for us is we have several attorney clients in various areas. In some cities, attorney is used as the most searched on term and in others it is lawyer??? So, I would do that first as it will apply to your content writing.
Next, I would make sure that my on page is spot on because otherwise, it is going to languish until you get the bug and you will be wasting your good content as no one will see it. A typical mistake with newer sites is identical title tags on every page - really bad for SEO. Another is you need quality meta descriptions for the organic traffic you get or they will not click through which is also bad for SEO.
I would also go after my Local SEO (places, bing bus portal, yahoo local and citation sites). If your site is new and your resources are good, I would sign up with Yahoo directory for the $295/yr. If you claim your SE local and 12 to 20 citation sites you will have helped yourself a lot.
Then, when your book goes out, set up speaking engagements and interviews for yourself and get the media links, etc. Whenever you are going to be hawking the book in the media make sure there is a link to your site. I am assuming you are creating a site for the book???
So, that is my 2 pence worth. Hope it is helpful.
Robert

To my experience it's very important to post solid contents continuously, to let people come and know you during the time even though it may be a good idea to have some content online to start.
Then I have good results with my Facebook page (in the Italian market): it's very easy to manage and very effective in spreading your content around the web. Furthermore, once you've got a good number of friends, your contents run even faster.

If you've written a book then you need to work on your image as an authority figure. Go out to tech sites and get yourself interviewed, with a link to your site. This is the kind of link building that Google loves and it pays the greatest rewards in the long run.
Offer some excerpts on your site. Better still, write your content and insert excerpts. Creates a natural teaser that makes people want to buy your book (which is why you're doing SEO). Maybe add a "power" picture of yourself (I'm basing this on what I've seen others do).
You NEED a FB page. Twitter plays a role too, but it requires a lot more fresh content. if you can't keep your Tweets up I'd skip it.

Prioritising SEO Tasks for Biggest Impact
Hi I want to find out, what people feel the top 3 focuses should be for an SEO (I know there are hundreds)...Content/Backlinks/Social/Technical I'm trying to better prioritise my work - I work on a large ecommerce site - with just me as the SEO & a development team in France So most of the technical stuff is controlled there. I focus on audits, KWD research & briefing content how to better optimise products. A lot of time is taken up by that as the site is so big & I'm concerned I am not putting enough effort into other areas. What should these areas be?! Backlinks/Content/Blogs - I can't do everything but would like to prioritise tasks which will have the

SEO for mobile sites?
Let's say I have an ecommerce site and it has a separate theme via device detection. So I may even have different content on the pages. So for example, on desktop, on mysite.com/flowers I have a video about flowers. But on mobile, I have 10 000 words of text. Will this page rank better for people searching via mobile? Will google give different search rankings, based on desktop vs. mobile? Or how is Google calculating this? Are there any good mobile SEO tips or a knowhow base?

Our company is mentioned on some high-traffic, authoritative sites and some of our products are linked as well. If we link to those pages, does it affect our SEO? How can we take advantage of those mentions?
I heard that if you link to another site, when Google indexes your site, they crawl that page that is referenced. By whatever metrics they use, if that site has your name or a link to your site, Google would rank it higher. I am not sure how true that is, but what value does another site mentioned our site have on our SEO?

Help with local Seo?
Hi, I am really struggling with current predicament i find myself in. I am a small to medium sized business based in Newcastle in the UK and am trying to rank well locally for the keywords that i feel my customers will be searching for locally. I have got to the stage where i am on page 1 of google uk or nearly there but cannot compete against the national companies who have the search terms then just add pages for virtually every city in the country. For example my main product is "Artificial Grass" and my city/town is Newcastle This is where my office is and where my customers are. This is also where my google places page states. Now theres a company that sells Artificial Grass called www.asgoodasgrass.co.uk that are based no where near but use the power of there site to come up in every local search by adding a page "Artificial Grass Newcastle" as well as hundreds of others. They rank 3rd and im 8th. There actual Newcastle page is poor, where as i put everything into my page including pics, video etc. Still no joy. I feel i am always going to rank behind these big boys even though i am the actual local company and have no intention of working others area that are not local to me. By the time i rank behind the above type companies and the likes of yell.com i feel i am never going to be seen and fall back on expensive adwords to help me along. I am a complete newbie at this and would love any help or tips you could give to give me a fighting chance in my area. My site is www.totaldrivewaysne.co.uk incase you want to look as you will have gathered my other primary product is driveways for which also i feel like i have a million competitors! many many thanks for any responses John

Question about Local / Regional SEO
Good Morning Moz Community, I have a local SEO/regional SEO question. I apologize if this question is duplicated from another area on this forum but, a query of the term Regional SEO showed no results, as did similar queries. Please preference this entire question with "Knowing what we know about the most recent changes to local search" I know what has worked in the past, my concern is Now. Working with a heavily regulated client that is regional, mostly East Coast US. They are in Financial Services and state licensing is a requirement. They are licensed in 15 states. Obviously, it would look foolish, in this day in age, to Title Tag individual pages with local modifiers and have numerous pages covering a similar topic with not much difference than localized modifiers in front of the keyword. I've never found that SE's can understand broad regional terms such as New England or Mid Atlantic or Southeast or Northeast, if someone knows different please share. Aside from an exact match search. The client does have 7 offices in various states. Perfectly matching and consistent listings in G Places, Bing Local and Yahoo Local was step one and all their locations are now in those services and there are many more smaller local citation listings are in the works. We have also successfully implemented a plan to generate great reviews from actual customers, for each location, they're receiving a few a day right now. Their local places listings, where they have physical locations, are doing very well but: 1. What would the community's suggestion be on generating more targeted traffic in the 8 states where they have no physical location? 2. The client wants to begin creating smaller blogs that are highly localized to the states and major population centers that they do not have a physical location in. There is an open check book to dedicate to this effort however, I do a lot of work in this industry so I want to offer the best possible, most up to date advice, my concern is that these efforts will have two results: a. be obscured by the ”7 pack" by companies with local brick and mortar b. would detract from the equity built in their existing blog by generating content in other domains, I would prefer to continue growing the main blog. 3. As a follow up, it has been documented that Google is now using the same algorithm for local, personal and personalized, that being the case, is there any value in building links to you Places page? Can you optimize your Places page by using the same off site techniques as you would traditionally? Sorry to kill you with such a long question on a Sunday 🙂

SEO updates and rank changes
We have been updating page titles and meta descriptions for a client (not changing ANY links and the content we are replacing is "fluff," no major keywords or any relevant information) yet in the past few weeks, rankings have plummeted. I used the SEOMoz grader to check and make sure we have the keywords in there, in the right places for the updated page source info, and we're getting A's yet for those same keywords, the website is nowhere to be found. For example for the phrase "organic t shirts," we get an A for this page: http://greenpromotionalitems.com/organic-t-shirts.htm but when searching organic t shirts, no Green Promotional Items... Ideas?
