Poor Links - SEO SpyGlass
-
Hello,
I have been using a free trial of SEO SpyGlass and from what I can see we have a few low value links...
Do you think we should get these removed?
Is SEO Spyglass worth its money?
-
Sometimes you do want to get links removed if you suspect they are hurting your site. Richard Baxter wrote a great article today about how to determine the quality of your backlinks.
https://seogadget.co.uk/bad-backlink-checking/
Unless you've suffered a penalty, it's usually easier just to build up more good links than worry about the bad.
As for SEO SPYglass, to be completely honest, I've tried the free version of SEO SpyGlass, and although I can't say anything negative about the service, neither did I feel compelled to upgrade to a paid version.
That said, I appreciate Olga's comments. I'm not here to promote SEOmoz or provide product comparisons to a competitor. As an SEOmoz employee, We're both certainly biased, and truth be told, I've heard others say good things about SEO SpyGlass. (but of course, I've heard a lot of people say great things about SEOmoz.
You should try out both the SEO SpyGlass free version, and sign up for the 30 free trial of SEOmoz, and see what you like best.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your SEO.

Hi Warrantywise and DigiJoltMan,
thank you for discussing SEO SpyGlass, I'm always curious to get fresh first-hand feedback on SEO PowerSuite tools (disclaimer: I'm posting it as Link-Assistant.Com employee).
Here are several things I'd like to sort out for you:
1. "I have been using a free trial of SEO SpyGlass and from what I can see we have a few low value links..."
SEO SpyGlass has no trial, it is available in Free, Professional and Enterprise Editions. You should be using the Free edition, which lists up to 1,100 links per project. Paid versions provide unlimited number of backlinks, often 10k+.
As you can imagine, I can't be unbiased when discussing if the tool is worth itsmoney (yes, it is :)), all I want to say you can't judge of SEO SpyGlass Professional or Enterprise effectiveness from the Free version you're using - the capability is different.
2. "The benefit of joining things like SeoMoz or Raven is that the tools are always improving and staying up to date with the search engines. Where as with software you have no guarantee that the company who made that software will be in business in the future so they will not keep updating it. "
SEO SpyGlass is updated almost weekly - one of the major recent improvements is the addition of our own backlink database. We religiously follow our tools' compliance with search engine updates.
Link-Assistant.Com, the company behind SEO SpyGlass, has been on the market since 2004 and it intends to be there for its customers for years to come!
We have huge social media presence, we're absolutely open to any questions - you're welcome to shoot us those to any social media outlets of ours or through our support.

When I was naive and innocent I looked into software and came to the conclusion it is a rip off. I feel the SEO SpyGlass is attempting to "cheat" and "manipulate" on a job that you can't really cheat on.
Are you adverse to joining SeoMoz? The benefit of joining things like SeoMoz or Raven is that the tools are always improving and staying up to date with the search engines. Where as with software you have no guarantee that the company who made that software will be in business in the future so they will not keep updating it.
All I can say is try the Free SeoMoz and Raven trails and see what you think of the tools. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Buy domain, redirect, get all the good links (+link juice) and disavow the spammy ones?
There is a domain for sale that has a quite nice profile and a lot of good backlinks, but also quite a few spammy ones. This domain has a Spam Score of 14% acc. to Moz Link explorer, ours has only 2%. My questions: 1. The domain and the good backlinks are related to or close to our content/keywords. But we are worried whether the "spammy" ones will hurt us. Does anyone has experience with this? 2. Would it help if we disavow the spammy backlinks afterwards? And if so, how do we do that? Add new domain to search console, disavow the bad links and then redirect the entire domain to our domain or redirect the domain first and then disavow from our property? Many thanks for your help!

Sort of lost my way - Links, SEO
Not sure where to start with this so please bare with me. I do the SEO for our company website (we're a small family business), I'm not an SEO'er by profession (I'm a carpenter/joiner) but been doing our site for ten or so years. About 12 months ago sort of let go of work & web things a bit due to very sudden family bereavement which kind of hit me hard. So when I did get back into doing bits on our site I probably then concentrated a little bit too much on content building rather than going after links etc. As a result we've dropped in the SERPS a bit, but having said that still just about clinging within the top ten for our terms. Since I've started again we've had Panda/Penguin and I'm a little unsure how to go about getting links in, most of my competitors are using things like blog commenting (just random blogs that are do follow) , recip linking (any sites as long as they give a link!) etc basically things that long term will hold no value long term (or possibly none even to begin with). All this brand stuff leaves me at a loss, we're a small family business as our the majority of our competitors so not 100% sure that the branding stuff I'm reading about is relevant? As I say I've got some pretty decent content, some of which I am trying to push with mixed results – we're not in a very sexy niche so not much chance of it picking up links naturally! Another thing I am noticing is in my niche I don't think any SEO companies are involved with my competitors, most of our competitors are ranking their home pages for every single related search term, whilst I've have always tried to create a page for each search term and I have these pages ranking. For example my main search term, lets say 'wooden doors' I rank an internal page for this term whilst everyone else seems to rank homepages. I'm finding it hard to get new links into this page, so one idea I do have is elsewhere on my site I have a guide to fitting the doors (with videos, pictures and text) so what I'm thinking is place this guide on my 'wooden doors' page making it a bit more linkable (it's fairly new and not yet gained any links, so no loss to move it) and would also mean a variation of anchor text. A good idea do you think? Some of my other content has been linked to by colleges in the UK, unfortunately all the links are behind moodle log-ins (give me a decent link you leeches! Lol) ! I am thinking of getting in touch with other colleges to see if the content would be useful, but actually getting hold of the person responsible for the subject is proving difficult! I've also done a bit of guest blogging, however I'm torn between writing decent stuff for our blog or giving it away (I wouldn't like to give something away thats poor, ok or doesn’t make sense) to other blogs. Sorry for the ramble (if you've made it this far then thanks for reading!)! Would appreciate all advice. Ultimately would love to get an SEO'er involved but looking around the good un's are out of our price range so I may seek some training as it may prove more beneficial.

Why does my site only have 4 internal followed links/internal links?
When using Open Site Explorer my site is winning in many categories but lacking in others as compared to competitors. I intend to improve on this but am a little confused by the extremely low number of "internal followed links" and "internal links" at just 4. My competitors have much more than that. Does this mean links to the root domain? Total internal links? I have many internal links so I'm having a hard time figuring this one out. What four internal links are getting noticed? I just went through and changed all the links that went to index.html to link to the root domain at www.njlimocarservice.com as I just found a Q&A that indicates this was better. So as of Wed at 5:45 PM all my links to the homepage went to index.html and not the root which is no longer the case. Not sure if this matters. At the same time I also just put a 301 from index.html to redirect to www.njlimocarservice.com. Any help appreciated! h9QuF.png

Link exchanges
I have quite a few legal clients and 90% of my clients top competitors are doing 1:1 link exchanges and they have been doing it for years. Other industries Dont seem as prevalent. I am just boggled every time someone says link exchanges don't work, will get penalized, or value is not passed. Its been working for my competitors....Legal SEO's seem to focus heavily on link exchanges. I have yet to do link exchanges, but am about to get started with a resourceful directory of local businesses on my clients site. Some will be linking back, but not all. Fear of penalization is lurking in my mind. Does anyone have any real data on this? Does anyone have an example of doing this properly and an example of how not to do it? I appreciate any feedback you can give. Thank you,
