Strange issue with video search results...
-
Hi all,
Got a bit of a weird problem that I can't work out.
I've got a page that contains a video. The SERP for one keyword has the video appearing directly in the search listing like a video rich snippet / schema.
Do not want.
This rich snippet style video result only appears when the page is found for this one keyword, and no other.
How do I stop google displaying the page like this? Why is it only displayed like this for one keyword and no others?
The video is a YouTube video and is embedded in the page. Nothing fancy is going on with the code.
Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Hey Will,
This sounds like an interesting problem! I'd be happy to look into it fully for you if you're willing to share the URL of the page and the keywords returning the video results?
If you don't want to share it publicly, then feel free to PM/email me and i'll take a look.
Cheers,
Phil

Not sure why you wouldn't want the video embed to show, but either way, I would recommend having a read (for research) of this (old) thread: http://groups.google.com/a/googleproductforums.com/forum/#!category-topic/webmasters/images--video-content/poyHScMu4sk
(although he says he still has the problem, it does look to me like he may have made a case-sensitivity error in his robots.txt file, although not 100% if that would stop
and also this: https://developers.google.com/webmasters/control-crawl-index/docs/crawlers
In theory, I think you should be able to do this.
See the page here: https://developers.google.com/webmasters/control-crawl-index/docs/robots_meta_tag
Specifically this tag:
So, I wonder if the following would work:
In theory, I wonder if you can perhaps block the video specific bot from crawling the pages via a robots.txt entry, like:
user-agent: Googlebot-Video
Disallow: /But maybe the html version would give you more flexibility.
Personally, I would always test this (the meta name version, above) first on a new/dummy page.
Research this really well first though, as mistakes with robots Disallow rules can be costly!.

No, there's no video sitemap. Assume the video can't be removed because of branding stuff.
It's really weird that it's only for this one search term too... Just can't work it out.
Only solution I can come up with is to put the video embed in an i frame. That'd keep everything looking the same to users but it would cost a lot more to implement than a slight tweak in htaccess / GWT / robots.txt. Gah.
Cheers for the response though!

Hi I have been seeing it a bit too recently for Youtube videos and also non youtube.
Quickest way to remove it imo would be to remove the video embed from the page.
Also do you have this page in a video sitemap? Possibly remove the link from the video sitemap.

News Errors In Google Search Console
Years ago a site I'm working on was publishing news as one form of content on the site. Since then, has stopped publishing news, but still has a q&a forum, blogs, articles... all kinds of stuff. Now, it triggers "News Errors" in GWT under crawl errors. These errors are "Article disproportionately short" "Article fragmented" on some q&a forum pages "Article too long" on some longer q&a forum pages "No sentences found" Since there are thousands of these forum pages and it's problem seems to be a news critique, I'm wondering what I should do about it. It seems to be holding these non-news pages to a news standard: https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/40787?hl=en For instance, is there a way and would it be a good idea to get the hell out of Google News, since we don't publish news anymore? Would there be possible negatives worth considering? What's baffling is, these are not designated news urls. The ones we used to have were /news/title-of-the-story per... https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/2481373?hl=en&ref_topic=2481296 Or, does this really not matter and I should just blow it off as a problem. The weird thing is that we recently went from http to https and The Google News interface still has us as http and gives the option to add https, which I am reluctant to do sine we aren't really in the news business anymore. What do you think I should do? Thanks!

Internal Search Results Appear in Google SERPS
My friend is running an ecommerce store selling apparels. How can we make internal search results to appear in Google SERPS and rank them? For example: the query is "peplum dress". You type the query into the internal search box and it returns a set of results. In this case, it's product listing. How can we optimize and rank it so it appears in Google SERP? Do we do it the traditional way in terms of links? Say URL is: http://www.asos.com/search/peplum-top?q=peplum+top&r=2 And we build links to it? Some of you may ask why not create a dedicated page for this, the reason being we'd have too many categories if we were to create one for each. Thoughts?

Canonical Tags being indexed on paginated results?
On a website I'm working on which has a search feature with paginated results, all of the pages of the search results are set with a canonical tag back to the first page of the search results, however Google is indexing certain random pages within the result set. I can literally do a search in Google and find a deep page in the results, click on it and view source on that page and see that it has a canonical tag leading back to the first page of the set. Has anyone experienced this before? Why would Google not honor a canonical tag if it is set correctly? I've seen several SEO techniques for dealing with pagination, is there another solution that you all recommend?

Is Google applying some customized search results, even when Private Browsing?
I am including a screenshot of a very interesting search result I received while InPrivate Browsing in Google using IE9. I was spot-checking some keywords while private browsing and the first one I searched was "presonus studiolive." Then, I searched a completely unrelated term "communion supplies." I am attaching a screenshot of the search results page I then received from Google. Interesting, no? I can't even begin to wrap my head around the implications of a search results page that mixes results from two completel unrelated terms. Thoughts? 7QNxPHM.jpg

Will the Canonical tag fix this issue?
I recently joined promoz and I've been busy working through the issues raised brought to light during the crawls of our Magento site, www.unitedbmwonline.com. One of many issues were the 10,000+ Duplicate Page Titles which I believe are the result of not using Canonical tags when setting up the store. This is now corrected and hopefully I'll see a significant drop in this value after this next crawl. Am I correct in this assumption? Cheers, Steve

How do you rank in the "brands for:" section in Google's search results ?
There's a "brands for:" section that appears above the first organic listing for certain search queries. For example, if you search for "dedicated servers" in Google, you will see that a "brands for:" appears. How do you get listed there? Thanks, Brian
