Back to Basics: Lets talk link directories :)

Hi,
Ok, bit of a muddy subject for me because lots say it's a good method, great for getting things started and some say it's a complete waste of time and it's spammy.
But I guess the difference between the two opinions is quality!
I have stopped using directories but think it's time to add some diversity to my link profile.
In the past I have used this - http://www.directorycritic.com/free-directory-list.html
What are your thoughts on that list? Does it actually fall into the spammy category and I should be looking for a much higher quality list.
Cheers

My response would essentially be the same for this question as your other question about article directories.
Do the most important/niche directories first. Check/find directories where your competition is listed, specially the ones that are outranking you in the SERPS. But again, don't do just a ton of those directories in one day. I would pick the niche ones, do them randomly amongst other link initiatives.

In my opinion, yes, there is some value in getting your website listed in some directories–but not all.
The main trick is figuring out which directories are worthwhile. I'd put a higher value on sites such as BOTW or DMOZ over 99.9% of directories in your list.
The main thing is to check how often the listings are updated, are the pages cached regularly by the SE's and the general quality of the sites that are submitted.
What you're trying to do is to figure out how much trust and what value the SE's are giving to the sites.
There are probably a few jewels in your list but I would be very selective and once you have found a dozen good sites you'll have a high quality list for most projects.

Paid directory links
Just going through my competitors back links, and discovered a couple of directories who charge a small fee for a listing (£20) (one way link) or a free listing (with a reciprocal link) they both have PR of 50 so I was wondering are these type of links still worth it? Best wishes. David.

Should I ask sites that link to me to update links that redirect?
I have found some links to my site that go through a single 301 redirect to get to my site. Should I contact these websites to ask them to update the link, or is that not worth the time?

Why am I getting links in my link report from sites that no longer exist?
So, I have a link report from Link Detox. And I'm going through all of them and considering what sites need to be removed. and trying to find emails and contact webmasters. There is just one odd thing i'm starting to see more of. A lot of links are on websites or webpages that no longer exist. The link no longer exists. Some of the domains are even available for purchase. Why are these links showing on the backlink report and are they really harming my website? Also, do I need to add these links into the disavow document that I will submit to Google?

Multiply Sites / Back Links / i.p Address ?
Hi We are building a business that has multiple locations in multiple cities in the UK. We want to build a network of geographical based websites for each location / city we have a office in that we service. We are going to build about 50 sites (Standalone on their own domain) to cover all the main cities, and one main company site. The idea with the 50 x sites is to benefit from google local searches and a local location. With the 50 x sites they would all back link to the main website, so would they need to all be on seperate i.p address and hosting to get the back link to count? or can they be all hosted on the same i.p address? Obviously it would be useful to get 50 x back links from relevant sites we are just trying to work out the best to way to do this. Thanks for any advice

Link in the footer
we have a sponsored link in the footer of a website, and since that footer is displayed on each page of that site, it shows that we have thousands of links coming from that site. my question is : does Google consider this as spamming? and does it help us , harm us, or has no effect?

Too many external links vs linking root domains - good or bad?
Hi guys, After the latest Linkscape update, we noticed that our website have 424,671 external links with 4,395 linking root domains, so roughly 100 links/domain. Does Google consider this to be a negative thing or we do not need to worry about it. Many thanks. David
