Our SEO is garbage. can someone answer a few questions for me?
-
I've seen our SEO drop to more or less the bottom of the barrel, and I don't have any answers yet as to why.
SEOMoz is running it's crawl currently, and I have a few errors about duplicate titles and content, so I know I have some work cut out for me. But, why the sudden drop?
The only change I made at the time was a change to our URL structure, but all links were 301'd to their new location. Does this still hurt SEO that terribly?
Also, our robots.txt file is getting indexed and showing up as the first result at times. Very embarrassing. It's doing better than our other pages. I don't get what's happening here.
-
Were you logged into Google when you did this search, when you saw your sites? If so Google was showing you results based on personal search. Sites that you've clicked on recently will show up on the first page.
-
We used to be in the first page results for "thantakit international dental center", but now nowhere. I've attached a screen cap of our issue with the robots.txt file showing up for the results as well.

Mr. Rock,
First, thanks so much for helping me out. This is my first question to seomoz and I'm an SEO newbie. So far I'm amazed at how much people are willing to help and how quickly I'm getting answers.
I'm thinking of dumping our site map and just making our site more crawl-able in general. 5800 URLs does sound a bit steep... I will look into Xenu.
As for the URLs, the url structure is like this:
/dentists/[country]/[city]/[clinic name]
so what you presented is rather normal, it just so happens that the clinic name is so generic, so it looks kind of funny. Do you think there would be a better way to present the clinic landing page? I chose this so that there was a standard hierarchy for drilling down into the clinic landing pages.
Again, that's a ton. It is my #1 priority to tune the site for SEO right now and it looks like SEOmoz and its community t'll be a key tool in doing so.
-
I think I found a few things that you can focus on first.. Do a quick search with a free tool called Xenu and I just and the tool and it finding a ton of broken links, pages that are no longer active. You will wan't to go through and clean those up first. Since it gives a bad visitor experience when the find something that maybe helpful and they click the link and it is dead... You can keep visitors on your site just by making this change.
The crazy thing is Xenu crawled 5886 URL's ???? Do you have that many pages? IF not you maybe having some database issues.
Another thing that may have you in the dump is from the Panda updates with low content to page ratio with this like below, as it looks like from the sitemap I ran you have a ton of these..
http://www.dentaldepartures.com/dentists/mexico/cabo+san+lucas
that then goes to this page for more details:
http://www.dentaldepartures.com/dentists/mexico/cabo+san+lucas/cabo+san+lucas+dental
I hope this helps, just food for thought.

Just got finished reading the dialog, you mentioned landing pages that use to rank and they do not now.. Can you direct us to one of those landing pages that had in the past gernerated leads?
THx
-
no prob, phil. I know I have a tendency to be a bit vague.
I have analytics set up and have attached a image of our impression drop over the past few months. We pretty much don't exist on the web these days.
We used to be #1 for many of the clinic landing pages. A search for "Sani Dental Group" would place us #1, now it is on page 15 or something.
Maybe we pissed off google? We're working on updating our content and we need a marketing guy pretty badly so we can get our name out there, but I was hoping there were some things a lowly developer like myself could do in the in meantime.
Edit: added image

when you say "we have no links" are you saying throughout the site? or other sites pointing to us? (or both)
I can fix the internal links no problem. I'm already working on a solution for that currently. As for links to our site, that is always the toughest part, right?
-
Links links links. You have no links. Majestic SEO says your best link is this...

I know it seems like I'm just answering your questions with even more questions, but I promise I'll eventually be helpful :).
Do you have Google Analytics set up on your site? If so, I'd suggest digging in to find out exactly where you're losing this traffic. Did a specific keyword drop off? A certain type of keyword? A certain landing page? A certain section of your site? etc.
-
Well yeah you've got to build some high quality relevant links. Your site is not just going to rank from on page optimization unless it is a very uncompetitive niche. Which Dentists is probably going to take some linkbuilding.
-
the change happened last month as seen in the image. I haven't been doing any link building yet, so I guess that's on my list of things to do.
-
no, we haven't changed our site location.
-
Duh, sorry guys: dental departures
-
My guess is that you got hit by the penguin update. What kind of linkbuilding have you been doing? Also it would be nice to see the site and no what keywords you were targeting.
-
Did you recently change your sites location?
-
If you're willing to share the URL of your site then some of us here might be able to help. It's hard to analyze and offer suggestions without seeing the site since there are so many different things that it could be.

SEO & App
Hi MOZ Community, We have a client that is currently ranking well for SEO. We are nearing completion of an app for the client. There is a fair bit of content that is the same across both the app and website. I have three questions; Do we want the app to get indexed? How do we avoid duplicate content on the website & app? Do we need both URL's to be the same or different (for website and app)?

UTM tracking on a mapped subdomain, is it OK? (DA bonus question)
Hi, This is a technical question. OK, two technical questions. Please bear with me and I'll do my best to explain... We have a WordPress blog (business account, hosted by WordPress). We use it to blog and send traffic to our separate e-commerce site. We use UTM tracking to see which blog posts perform best. Our e-commerce site has a high domain authority. Our blog, not so much. In an effort to increase the domain authority of the blog we have mapped a subdomain of the e-commerce site to the Wordpress blog (still hosted by WordPress). Q1. Will this actually raise the blog's DA? If the blog does get a DA boost, I guess it'll be because Google now sees it as part of a powerful domain. But if it is technically part of the powerful domain... Q2. Should we remove the UTM parameters from the blog? I've read that you should never use UTM on internal links because it messes with your Google Analytics data. But I'm unsure if links on a mapped subdomain count as 'internal links'. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance. J

Can the end of a competition cause a drop in organic visitors?
Hi everyone, Over the last six months I've been running a few competitions on my largest site, but noticed a very large decrease in organic sessions just after the third one ended. For reference, the site is ~10 years old and gets a couple of million sessions per month.Organic sessions throughout last year and before the holiday periods were around 800k/month, which then increased by 50% during the holiday period alongside a competition I ran. These competitions double the pages per session and add another 1.5 minutes onto session duration. At the end of one of the competitions this year, daily organic sessions halved overnight and are now below the baseline of last year - and not improving. Some possible causes include; Google update - unlikely, because the date of the drop doesn't coincide with any increase in SERP volatility that I can find The extremely quick overnight drop in engagement (pages/session and session duration falling back to pre-comp baseline) caused Google to believe our site to be less popular and thus less deserving of rankings Visitors who've been bombarded with month-long competitions are sick of seeing them and are not searching for my site so often Email tagging - in the week before, UTM tracking parameters were added to all emails (of which there are a lot of subscribers) - as the number of Email visitors in Analytics increased, Organic did slightly decrease at the same time. I think this is unlikely, but I wonder if somehow some of our email visitors were previously being classed as Organic as well as some being Direct Incorrectly tagged as Direct - at the same time as the organic drop, Direct traffic doubled - it has since decreased back to just above the Direct baseline, however Organic has not improved I'd just be interested to know if anyone has any experience with something similar happening and, if so, what do you think the cause was and how did you rectify it? Thank you very much for your input in advance!

Can not divide in different properties a domain in Search Console (Webmaster Tools)
Dear Moz Community, I hope you can give me a hand with the following questions. Im in charge of SEO of an ecommerce site in LATAM. It´s service is available in several countries, therefore each country has it subdirectory Eg. /ar /pe /co /bo /cl /br,etc... (in the future we will move to differente ccTLDs). I have been recomended to split or create different Search Console or Webmaster Tools properties (one for each subdirectory) but when Im creating a new property with a subdirectory, lets say www.domain.com/ar, Webmaster tools starts creating a property for www.domain.com/ar/ (NOTICE THE LAST SLASH) and it returns since that page doesn´t exist, what do you recomend me to do? Best wishes, Pablo Lòpez C

Https question
I had a site with an ssl certificate on. It has now been taken off. We are getting 404 errors on the weekly report for pages that were indexed as https What is the best way to get rid of these? How can I take them off the map or do we need to put the ssl back on? Thanks

Ok. I'm just going to cut loose with my stupid question. What is internal link equity? What distinguishes an internal link with equity from one without equity?
What distinguishes an internal link with equity from one without equity? Is there a limit to how many of these I want? What's the rule-of-thumb? Cheers, Wes

Weird Analytics Question
Looking at a Google Analytics report for a client - Traffic Sources - Referrals - Landing Pages from one particular referrer. This one referral site is a large trade directory that links onto several deep pages of the site, but also links onto the homepage. Analytics is showing the one landing page as //index.html. That's 2 // - not one. If you click on the link, it's a 404. I've never seen this in Analytics before. I'm looking at the client's info on this trade directory site and I can't see a link that points to this 404. The majority of incoming traffic from this site is apparently coming to this //index.html page, so you'd think it would be coming from their main profile on the site. But it's not there. Also, if you had all this referral traffic coming to a 404, you'd expect a really high bounce rate, but it's not - it's average. The client also has a sister site also listed in this directory, and I'm not seeing this same issue in their Analytics. Is this just some weird glitch in Analytics?
