Why have my rankings suddenly plummeted?
-
My site has been ranking well for the last couple of weeks on it's primary term "glee fansite" and now the rankings literally plummeted 5 days ago and now it is around 22 for "glee fansite" and many of it's other terms have just dropped out completely!
Is it likely the rankings will come back if I keep on with my current strategy or will I need to start from scratch?
Thanks!

As mentioned below, I'm in a similar position:
My understanding is that User/XML site maps are an issue only if you're not getting all your pages crawled.
Also, if there were an issue about anchor-heavy inbound text, would there not be a message in Google Webmaster Tools?

I'm in a similar boat -- interested to find out how it panned out for you.

Thanks guys! I'll try to wait it out for a while!

HI Hg,
I too have experienced this type of behaviour. If i was in your shoes I'd leave it for at least a week if the rankings show no signs of recovery heres what i's do next:
1. Go into your webmaster tools and isolate and resolve any crawl issues i.e Broken links, duplicate content etc.
2. Make sure youve got an upp to date xml sute map in place
3. Make sure your site has a user site map in place
4. Make sure your inbound link building strategy isnyt just targeting "commercial terms" eg "glee fansite" the Google Algorithm Penguin update is onto this
5. Make sure your ranking score is accurate e.g measure it through a paid for package eg Web CEOI too am in a similar boat and if you have been hit by the penguin update I'm trying to figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do about it apart from the nuclear option of changing hosts and starting all over again

it may still go back up, my sites occasionally drop for a few days and then go back to normal. never sure why. so I wouldn't panic yet.
your backlink profile could do with some links from real quality sites.

My Domain has a couple of badlinks decreasing my rankings, will disavowing them reduce my Domain Authority on Moz?
Good day Every Body, I have a heart aching issue, my site (nightwatchng.com) amassed a number carnivorous backlinks, I have lost rankings, i studied my search traffic and discovered that I have been hit by Google Penguin Algorithm Penalty, I was forced to believe that those backlinks were built to my site on purpose just so my rankings will drop, I know the importance of link building and thats why i follow the white hat technique. Now the big question is, IF I DISAVOW THESE TERRIBLE LINKS FROM GOOGLE SEARCH, WILL MY MOZ DOMAIN AUTHORITY DROP FROM WHAT IT CURRENTLY HAS?? I also want to know if the Algorithm Penalty will affect the subdomain (news nightwatchng.com) of my site?

I earned some high-quality backlinks, but the target page's ranking is not improving. Why?
Within the last three months, I acquired five .EDU backlinks and two editorial links to a page ranking for a competitive keyword. After the first few links came through, the page jumped from #15 to #7. It stayed there with minor fluctuations for a couple weeks. I earned a couple more good links, and the page fell as far as #44. It has recovered a bit then, but has not returned to the first page. It is worth noting that the .EDU links were achieved by sponsoring university programs. Could Google possibly be recognizing this as a link scheme? Are the links being earned too quickly? I don't believe it could be either, as the links reside on high quality, trustworthy sites and there wasn't a sudden major influx of them. Thank you for your insight! Also, I think my username tricked Moz into thinking I'm a staffer. Not the case!

Target keyword appears in organization name. Does it Rank?
I want to rank for the keyword "breast cancer" so when someone uses the anchor text "The Breast Cancer Foundation" am I getting a backlink for both The Breast Cancer Foundation AND breast cancer? Does Google break apart the anchor text in any way that would benefit me in this case?

Build links to home page or internal to rank internal pages?
I understand that naturally people link to the home page and internal pages - probably the home page more often than not. In order to build a natural looking link profile I also understand that I need a variety of anchor text, brand and url links. Should I be building links mainly to the home page with only a few to internal pages? Ultimately I want my internal pages to rank for specific terms so in my head it makes sense to concentrate my link building effort to internal pages but that would seem unnatural to google I'm sure. For arguments sake if I only built links to the home page with a mix of the anchor texts described above would these internal pages rank eventually anyway as 'link juice' flows throughout the site? Or is it an absolute must to build some links to internal pages. Could a page rank for a keyword without having any links to the site with the keyword anchor text (simply url links) based on the page title/content? Also what is a good ratio of home page to internal links? I would assume around 10:1? A lot of questions I know but I'm confused as to what will be the best strategy.

How to out rank well with category page for high competitive keyword?
This is really silly question to ask over here! But, I have to drop my mind bubble after long R & D and efforts! Right now, I am working on Patio Umbrellas keyword and want to out rank with following landing page. http://www.vistastores.com/patio-umbrellas I have implemented too many ways on this page since January 2012. Right now, my website is in top 20 position with this keyword. I want to achieve top 10 ranking with Patio Umbrellas keyword. Now, I have certain limitation to make changes on web page. This is client requirement. So, I have to drill down more with link building. I have started work on link building on since February 2012 and rank well with keyword. Now, I'm searching for link building way which help me to improve ranking in short time frame. I don't want to do any single activity on this page which is UN-productive for me. If you have any on page inputs so it may help me more. SEOmoz is really big source to search and justify answer but, I want to add expert advice in it. Thanks,

Do you believe TLD distribution effects rankings in Google?
I have noticed that when looking at TLD distribution of backlinks for many websites that have grown organically, the TLD distribution is somewhat consistent depending on the style of website (I am using MajesticSEO to find this distribution data). Do you feel deviating from this TLD distribution depending on the style of website you have would cause negative effects with Google? Has there been any testing of this that you know of that you can point me to (ex: building all backlinks from .info TLDs and seeing if you rank well for given keywords)? I ask because my companies website has seen some big deviations from this and although I don't see any negative effects currently I want to make sure we create a site that stays consistent with what Google is looking for. For example, if I look at news sites such as New York Times and Los Angeles Times, I see TLD distributions as such: nytimes.com

.com = 59%
.gov = 14%
.org = 12%
.uk = 2%
.edu = 2% latimes.com
.com = 59%
.org = 13%
.gov = 11%
.edu = 4%
.net = 2%
.uk = 2% From that, if you are a news site, my assumption would be to try to stay consistent with around 55-65% of your links coming from .com domains, around 9-15% from .org, etc etc . Now, looking at large blog styles sites I see this distribution: naturalnews.com
.com = 70%
.org = 11%
.edu = 3%
.net = 2%
.gov = 1% techcrunch.com
.com = 71%
.org = 10%
.edu = 4%
.net = 3%
.gov = 1% Any input or links to tests of this would be much appreciated.0 -
Our website has seen a steady decline in rankings over the past few months, is there any merit to paid bulk directory submission? Or could it potentially harm our campaign.
Our website has been experiencing a slow but steady decline in rankings despite our activity on social media platforms, is there any value in paying a large sum for bulk directory submission? Or will this only result in our overall website authority decreasing further due to unnatural links. Would really appreciate any help.

Need help interpreting Ranking Factors.
Trying to see DA vs. mozrank and why things don't match the definitions given by seomoz. I'm comparing my site www.taxproblem.org w/ www.unclefed.com I have more root sites linking to me and more links. I can see that the mozrank for me is 4.96 which is higher. But their mozrank is higher. How are they more popular based on how the domains, rather than the pages link to each other. That is real confusing? Please help me understand what this means, and yes i know that right now they have better quality links, but that's not what the definition says. I'm I not understanding the definition? mozRank of the page www.unclefed.com/ mozRank shows how popular a page is on the web. The more links to a page, the more popular it becomes. Links from important pages increase your popularity, and your mozRank, even more. 4.64 out of 10 4.64 Links to the page www.unclefed.com/ The total number of links to this page, counting links from www.unclefed.com and links that don’t increase the mozRank. 606 links 2 Root domains linking to the page www.unclefed.com/ The number of different websites with links to this page. When compared to the number of links to this page, it can reveal how the links might be distributed across the web. 279 domains 5 mozRank of the subdomain www.unclefed.com Domain mozRank is a link popularity score based on how the domains, rather than just pages, link to each other. It is an indicator of a how popular www.unclefed.com is among domains 5.12 out of 10 5.12
