How do I find traffic for local keywords?
-
We're having trouble finding reliable traffic numbers for long-tail local keywords (ex. - "computer repair green bay"). We tried using Google Insights but it doesn't display long-tail keyword information, only broad keyword keywords searched for in a certain locale.
We also tried using Wordtracker, but that hasn't been too reliable either.
Is there a single tool that provides real traffic for local long-tail keywords?

You are very welcome, Brandon. Thanks for using Q&A!

Hi Brandon,
The short answer to your key question is - no, there is not currently a tool that provides reliable geo terms. Even if you are in a major city, like LA, you cannot really rely on any tool for this. The reason for this involves data centers, IP addresses, etc.
So, how to Local SEOs conduct keyword research, then? Good question! Here is how I do it, and how the other Local SEOs I know handle this task:
-
Perform your keyword research without any geo modifiers. Search for your brand, your services and products and create a spreadsheet of the terms you discover.
-
From this list, create a second list including your geo terms. These might include city names, county names, neighborhood names, regional names and zip codes. They might also include modifiers like 'in' (i.e. computer repair in green bay).
-
You now have the most reliable list of keyword terms to target.
While there isn't a kw tool that can take the place of this method, I recently became aware of an interesting free tool that helps you generate geographic terms, by themselves. You might like to check this out in helping you determine good geo keywords to add into your list in step 2:

Google Insight does provide some help, but don't overlook the most important factor - listening to what your customers call who you are and what you do. If you've been in business for a long time, you may have become aware of interesting terms your customers use that aren't necessarily in-house terms for things. Definitely, look those terms up to see if people are using them to search.
Good luck with the task ahead!

I use Market Samurai. This is the tool that I use on a regular basis and I like the results.

Keyword research tools
So I went to a panel a while back that said Wordtracker is basically useless. I'm not using it as an end-all, be-all, but more for insights and context. Do you agree with that statement? The hosting company provides a keyword research tool, so I wasn't sure how seriously to take it. Have you guys been using Bing for the search data previously provided by Google's Keyword Research Tool? Do you find that to be a viable resource? Thanks.

SeoMoz Keyword Tool
Hello All, Ive been using the SeoMoz Keyword tool but have a quick question. Im working on a newer site with a DA according to OSE of 35. Im combing through keywords to rank. Although competition is very high I have found a few holes. According to the Keyword tool in SeoMoz a few keywords Im looking at are roughly 50%. Would it be to difficult to rank for this type of term? Ive been using a combination of Google Trends, Adwords keyword tool, and ubersuggest, to try and see whats available. Does anyone use different tools? Thank you

Branded Keywords
I know branded keywords are variations of your company name. However, my company sell a number of exclusive products that have been trademarked so no other company can use that name. Is that counted as a branded keyword?

What do broad match keywords represent?
Exact match is perfectly easy for me to get my head around - broad match, not so much! Take the phrase, "removing blueberry stains." Is the broad match data for this that I'm seeing in the Google keyword tool for searches that involve any of these particular words, in any phrase, in any order - just so long as they're all there? Any help with this concept would be much appreciated.

Keyword Research (dash or no dash)
I have a client that has been optimizing for "print and apply" for the past 5 months. Yesterday they decided it was more grammatically correct to use "print-and-apply." There question to me was "is this going to effect our SEO?" So... I checked the difficulty using the keyword analysis tool, both keywords had the same broad/exact adwords traffic as well as difficulty percentage. When reviewing the top 25 listings for each keyword it looks like the same sites rank in the SERPs between 1-8 and then after that it is completely different. So, is there a better keyword to target? Are these two keywords different enough to truly have separate search results?

The top 8 results didn't even target "print-and-apply" in there content or title tags... Thanks for the input/discussion - Kyle0 -
A good rule of thumb for competition and local searches when selecting keywords
I'm doing keyword research in the Google Keyword Tool and was looking and spending a lot of time looking at keyword competition and local searches. I'm trying to determine what is a good rule of thumb for what level of competition and local searches people have used when selecting the keywords they will optimize for. I've currently been trying to find ones that have less than 50% (moderate) competition and less than 1,000 monthly searches. Also, which do you put more weight on the competition or the number of searches.
