Anyone else seeing increased duplication of domains since Penguin?

Hi Is it just me or are the Google SERPs showing more duplication of domains since the penguin update. As an example if I search for "business Christmas cards" on google.co.uk then results 2, 3 and 17 are from the same domain. Similarly results 4, 20, 21 and 22 are the same domain. All results are "reasonable" in that they are designed to catch traffic for variations on this term BUT I'm sure google used to filter this duplication per-penguin. Am I imagining this increased duplication of domains? Gary

I just thought I would share an astonishingly good (or is that poor) example of the problem at the moment....
Do a search on www.google.co.uk for "wedding venues in buckinghamshire" (no quotes needed) and most of the results from page two onwards are coming from a single domain!
Simply terrible results, IMHO! How broken is that!

That's encouraging. Even if the results are a bit dodgy at the moment, I'm sure Google will sort this out as it creates such a poor experience.

Hi Gary, there is a lot of chat on this on the Google Webmaster Forum . It's happening all over. Some people seeing the same domain dominate 8 out of the first 10 search results on Page 1 . Great if that's your domain - not so good for everyone else. Also not such a great user experience in my opinion.

Thanks for this. Funny, I'm looking from the perspective of "breaking in" right now. It's just a bit of a shame because many of the duplicated pages are really only designed for search engines and are variations on a theme. Hopefully this is an unintended consequence of the latest updates and we will see it reversed. I don't think it improves the results. Gary

I noticed this too. I believe that Google is making it much more difficult to get two (or more) listings on the first page of the SERPs. However, the number you can get on other pages has really gone up.
I was reading about a study that looked at the first 1000 places in google. Usually, only about 200 domains are present in the top 1000. When I think about that I wonder how a new website in some moderately competitive niche is supposed to break in.

Yeah I have noticed the same, while searching on a keyword "sugar daddy oregon" on google.com, I noticed the SEO work I had done secured the top 3 positions for seekingarrangement.com
This only happened after those major updates.

Is repurposing an old sub domain better than creating a new sub domain?
We have a good sub domain like** art.ourwebsite.com** which currently sells custom canvas art. We have owned the domain since 2013 but it has only been live for the past few weeks. We want to redesign & repurpose the page to continue to sell custom canvas art but will eventually include other merchandise like mugs, tshirts, etc which wouldn't be custom. Would it be best to keep art.ourwebsite.com since is a shorter/more memorible & older sub domain or would it be best to update the name to something that encompasses our new products? Sub Domain Redirect
Hey Everyone, Here is the situation : Currently, a website's sub domain is being redirected to the main website home page. We're having issues getting the sub domain pages indexed. Just want to confirm that it is because of the redirect on the sub domain URL. Should we kill the sub domain redirect and set it up as it's own page? Will that solve the indexing issue for the sub domain pages. More explanation below: subdomain.domain.com currently redirects to domain.com We're having issues indexing pages belonging to the sub domain ( subdomain.url.com/page1 or subdomain.url.com/page2) Appreciate your input in advance. When is Duplicate Content Duplicate Content
Hi, I was wondering exactly when duplicate content is duplicate content? Is it always when it is word-for-word or if it is similar? For example, we currently have an information page and I would like to add a FAQ to the website. There is, however, a crossover with the content and some of it is repeated. Tips and duplicate content
Hello, we have a search site that offers tips to help with search/find. These tips are organized on the site in xml format with commas... of course the search parameters are duplicated in the xml so that we have a number of tips for each search parameter. For example if the parameter is "dining room" we might have 35 pieces of advice - all less than a tweet long. My question - will I be penalized for keyword stuffing - how can I avoid this?

Change of domain name?
Hello, We are currently developing a new site for an existing online clothing retailer. The existing site is on a .co.uk domain, however we are targeting a global market and wondered whether we could/should launch the new site under a .com address and whether this would be beneficial? Checkout on different domain
Is it a bad SEO move to have a your checkout process on a separate domain instead of the main domain for a ecommerce site. There is no real content on the checkout pages and they are completely new pages that are not indexed in the search engines. Do to the backend architecture it is impossibe for us to have them on the same domain. An example is this page: http://www.printingforless.com/2/Brochure-Printing.html One option we've discussed to not pass page rank on to the checkout domain by iFraming all of the links to the checkout domain. We could also move the checkout process to a subdomain instead of a new domain. Please ignore the concerns with visitors security and conversion rate. Thanks!

I think I have a penalty on my domain...
my domain is www.brighttights.com it is an affiliate marketing website in the niche of tights and lingerie. A few months back my traffic was pretty good, doing about 500 hits a day from product search terms only. After the panda updates I blocked all the product pages from google as they were duplicate content and I am now working on a program of seing for the category and homepages instead. I am using much more generic, and high volume, keywords for these. Several months later I seem to not only be down to 7 people a day on my website but i'm not even ranking for terms such as "bright tights". I used to be no1 for this. I have domain authority of 27 so it's not terrible, competitors on the first page range from 45 to 9. This lack of ranking for the sites name/domain name term is leading me to wonder if I have a penalty on the site. Any feedback would be gratefully received.

What should I set my domain setting to?
In Google Wemnaster tools, I have the option to set it to either have as default the "www" or without it. What are the pros and cons of one way or the other . . . or is this a way more complicated question/can of worms I have opened?
