Has a product portfolio bad (direct) influence on rankings because of less relevant content?
-
Hey SEO's,
I'm wondering if a bad product portfolio of a e-commerce website has an influence (direct) on the rankings because of less relevant content.
To show you what I'm thinking about, look at these two situations:
1. E-Commerce website with 3.000 products from different brands (all top brands) but the products itself are not quite up to date
2. E-Comerce website with 3.000 products from differend brands (all top brands) but these products contain allways the top seller items.
Is it possible, that Google has an index for "fresh content" or "highly demanded content" or something like this which has direct influence on the ranking?
I ask this question besides the fact, that its of course allways better to have the top sellers in a portfolio than not have. But the big thing is: What to do if you don't know which products are best, or you just don't get them from your retailers or some other reason...
For Google & Co. its harmfull (I guess) to put a e-commerce website without top-seller products into the top-rankings with high competition!?
Any ideas on that?

Yes freshness does help.
In your regards to your problem, best sellers are usually best selling items within your own business/site. So generally all these stats would be from your own business. Whats been selling and what hasn't been selling.
If a certain product is converting on your site, it would make sense to show that it is a top seller to create more conversions.
Lets say a visitor comes to your site basically to buy shirts, but one of your 'retailers'/brands sell more jeans than usual, then that top seller would not benefit your visitors.
It is your business and you should use those implications to decide what to put on that list.

Hey Florian
I don't think this would have any real impact and I can only speak in general terms but there are always people searching for older products.
If the pages are dead, you don't have stock any longer and are not doing any traffic then it may make sense to remove them as it's a poor user experience to find something and then not be able to order it but beyond that, the standard ecommerce SEO:
- make your product descriptions unique
- Don't have rafts of thin content
- try to offer some content that the competition does not
- - video reviews
- - comparisons etc
- make sure your pagination for category pages is optimised
- good call to action on product page
- external reviews
So, to answer your original question, I would say it is not harmful to have these older products but if the pages are weak and feature lots of duplicate product descriptions and the like then they may be harmful but not for the reasons you suspect.

Some Content The Same
Hello. I am about to publish some landing pages that target different industries that we are trying to market to. X for Accountants
On-Page Optimization | | smithandco
X for Financial Advisors
X for Fitness Trainers
X for X While a good portion of the content is unique on each page "the benefits of using X for accountants" some of the content on the page is duplicate which explains more about how our software works (the features), this will be the same content on every page. Is this considered duplicate content? What should I be aware of in term of Google rankings and penalties? Thanks,

Delete or not delete outdated content
Hi there!
On-Page Optimization | | Enrico_Cassinelli
We run a website about a region in Italy, the Langhe area, where we write about wine and food, local culture, and we give touristic informations. The website also sports a nice events calendar: in 4 years we (and our users) loaded more than 5700 events. Now, we're starting to have some troubles managing this database. The database related to events is huge both in file size and number of rows. There are a lot of images that eat up disk space, and also it's becoming difficult to manage all the data in our backend. Also, a lot of users are entering the website by landing on outdated events. I was wondering if it could be a good idea to delete events older than 6 months: the idea was to keep only the most important and yearly recurring events (which we can update each year with fresh information), and trash everything else. This of course means that 404 errors will increase, and also that our content will gettin thinner, but at the same time we'll have a more manageable database, and the content will be more relevant and "clean". What do you think? thank you 🙂 Best0 -
Re-Direct or 410
We have an ecommerce site. If we have a product that is not going to be available again and the url of the product is not in the Google index should we re-direct it to a category page or do a 410? Thank you as always in advance.

Duplicate content issues - page content and store URLs
Hi, I'm experiencing some heavy duplicate content Crawl errors on Moz with www.redrockdecals.com and therefore I really need some help. It brings up different connections between products and I'm having a hard time figuring out what it means. It is listing the same products as duplicate content but they have different URL endings. For example:http://www.redrockdecals.com/car-graphics/chevrolet-silverado?___store=nl&___from_store=us

http://www.redrockdecals.com/car-graphics/chevrolet-silverado?___store=d&___from_store=us It seems like Moz considers the copy-pasted parts in the Full Description (scrolled a bit down on product pages) as Duplicate Content. For example the general text found on this page: http://www.redrockdecals.com/caution-tow-limited-turning-radius-decal Or this page: http://www.redrockdecals.com/if-you-don-t-succeed-first-time-then-skydiving-isn-t-for-you-bumper-sticker I am planning to write new and unique descriptions for all products but what do you suggest - should I either remove the long same descriptions or just shorten them perhaps so they don't outweigh the short but unique descriptions above? I've heard search engines understand that some parts of the page can be same on other pages but I wonder if in my case this has gone too deep... Thanks so much!0 -

Duplicate content errors
I have multiple duplicate content errors in my crawl diagnostics. The problem is though that i already took care of these problems with the canonical tag but MOZ keeps saying there is a problem. For example this page http://www.letspump.dk/produkter/56-aminosyre/ has a canonical tag, but moz still says it has an error. Why is that?

Similar content multiple pages
I have run in to a situation on an e-commerce store where products from a certain manufacturer require a fairly large chunk of corporate information to be posted underneath the product description: I.E. Trademark information, etc. This information happens to be close to half the size of the product description information. Am I at risk of getting hit negatively for this portion of text duplicated across multiple products? I was considering putting a link to a separate informational page with this information but am not sure if it even matters? What are your recommendations brilliant SEO'erz?

Duplicate content? Not sure.
Good news! I have my first real SEO gig and now I have to be able to actually deliver. I'm up for it but I want to be sure I'm seeing what I think I am before suggesting any changes. I'm working my way throught Danny Dover's excellent book SEO Secrets and learning tons! To see if there is duplicate content on the site, I've taken a sentence from one of the pages on the site and searched for it: i.e., site:storybooksforhealing.com "Some of the most quiet moments are often the most difficult after a loss. Mornings, late nights, time alone." The SERPs show 7 pages that have this text on it. It seems like this is duplicate content, right? This is a Wordpress website so what's happening is the actual page is here: www.storybooksforhealing.com/publish-cup-of-joy/ but there are several archive pages that show excerpts of this text, too. If this is duplicate content (first question) then how would I go about remedying it? Should I set the canonical reference to /publish-cup-of-joy page? Thank you for being patient with my NOOB questions.
