Planning to out source
-
Hi there,
I am planning to out source my SEO and one company has caught our attention, they propose this:
Article submissions
Directory submimssions
Blog post comments
Social bookmark submissions
Press Release submissions
The above sounds a bit spammy, however the success they have had with such activity with other websites has been fantastic.
Please let me know your thoughts

The above sounds a bit spammy,
I agree.... I hope that my competitors are signing up for this. I hope that they all buy six-packs.
however the success they have had with such activity with other websites has been fantastic.
lol.... Right! The penguins are loving it..

Please let me know your thoughts
My thought is....MOVE FAST! More specifically, run as fast as you can AWAY from any site like that.
Here are some questions to consider:
1. What is the name of the person who will be working on your site? If a company cannot tell you, there is a good chance they do not know. Many companies advertise SEO and other services and then simply outsource the work to India, the Philippines or other areas for $3/hr.
2. Ask where the work will be done. What is the address of the office where you can stop by and visit? It is ok to work with a SEO consultant working out of his home, but you probably want to know that information up front. My main concern is outsourcing to foreign countries where the work is usually exceptionally low quality.
3. The services mentioned above...I would not accept them for free. They are far more likely to damage your site (i.e. penalize the site) then offer any benefit in the long term. In the short term you MAY receive a ranking boost but I don't care about varying anchor text or other such nonsense. These activities are black hat seo, they will get caught in time and will likely cost you tens of thousands of dollars to clean up, or force you to abandon your domain.
Focus on activities which build REAL value for your customers. A solid SEO plan is:
A) Focus on your website architecture. Ensure the site is built with best SEO, HTML and security practices. Provide single sign-on, valid code, automatic internal linking, a quality 404 page, etc etc.
B) Focus on creating BEST ON THE WEB content. Anything you write should be better then the top articles which focus the same keywords. Try to make the internet a better place for having your site in it.
C) EARN links. Collect links that cannot be "built" but must be earned.
It sounds like you are looking for a cheap way out and you are about to quickly find out just how painful it is trying to steal rankings from others with black hat tactics.

The methods you are quoting above do not add something to any particular campaign, i would prefer you added them to something value of some sort.
Blog post comments within industry settings can always be usefull along with article submissions but all of this needs to be controlled rather than spammed so you can have an overall reach with the methods that you are using.
Press release Submissions are valuable but again need to give the user added value to what your actually talking about. I,m hesistant to think the kind of press releases you can spam weekly, that will get you what u desire as opposed to an industry related release that might somehow give someone added knowledge that may induce a lead, a sale or otherwise
Strategy is key to the above campaign and i hope you plan accordingly either way
Cheers ROb

Oh, I bet you are going to get some good replies to the above here:)
All of those things can actually be quality. However if the proposal is based around those then they are unlikely to be - as they are all cheap, easy "bulk" methods. Exactly the sort of thing that has cause many people to come unstuck this year.
I'd be wary of any claims of success based just on those methods to be honest. Sites using those methods can rank for competitive terms. However in the current climate they are often ranking despite those methods not thanks to them.

No mention of any on-page optimisation or strategies and the use of blog post comments I would be very careful if I were you....

Phasing in new website on www2 domain - 301 plan
Hi, I work for a large company and we're planning to phase in a new website. The idea is to develop key journeys on the new site and serve them on a www2 domain, removing them from the old website which is served on the www domain. The reason for this is because the old website is over 2,000 pages, and the management want to see new, improved journeys sooner rather than later. So, rather than launching all new pages and journeys at the same time, which will take a long time to design and develop, key journeys will move across to the new site / design sooner and made available to visitors. Whilst the overall journey might be a bit disjointed in parts (i.e. sending people from old to new site, and vice versa) I can't see a better way of doing it... Once all new content is complete, 301s will be implemented from old content on www. to new content www2. Once the phasing is complete, and all new content is in place on www2, 301s will be implemented to point everything back to www. Does anybody see any problems with this approach? Or any ideas on how to better handle this situation? Thanks Mozzers!

Website structure - best tools to analyse and plan, visually
Hi - I am about to analyse and then re-plan the structure of a website and think it would be best to do it graphically - in the form of a chart. Are there any tools you would recommend to visualise the structure of an existing website (perhaps something that can scan and then represent a websites) - or plan out a new/revised website? Thanks in advance, Luke

Original Source Tag or Canonical Tag for News Publishers?
I have been sourcing content from a news publisher who is my partner for publishing content online. My website deals with sourcing content from a couple of websites. I did use a canonical tag pointing towards the respective syndicated source but I have not seen traffic for those articles. I did some research and found out that Google does have a tag for news publishers which is the "original-source" tag which helps news publishers to give proper credit for their work. Here's a link to the official word by Google" https://news.googleblog.com/2010/11/credit-where-credit-is-due.html Although Google has officially stated that the "syndication-source" tag has been replaced by the "canonical" tag. However, there is no mention about the "original-source" tag.

Can I still use the "original-source" tag to syndicate content from my partner site instead of the "canonical" tag? P.S.: The reason why I am not convinced with the use of the canonical tag is because:
1. As per what Google says, duplicate content won't harm my website unless it is spam. (And since we are rightfully content from our partner'website and showcasing it to a larger audience by hosting it on our website as well, we are thereby not indulging in any unethical practices) 2. The canonical tag could possibly hamper my crawl bandwidth issues as it would essentially need the crawler to crawl the whole page to figure out that the canonical is present, post which any possible valuation that my site could have garnered gets lost.3. Moreover, since I am from the news, media and publication industry, content republication is a widely accepted practice and in such cases simply including a link to the original source of the article or using the original source tag should suffice, That being mentioned, I do not want to go ahead without taking a second opinion about this. Kindly help me to resolve this issue.0 -
Keyword Spy Source?
We've got a few backlinks from Keyword Spy and Keyword Spy Pro. I'm pretty sure of the answer but I'll ask it anyway. Is there any way to determine who's doing the snooping? Are there any signals to look for while clicking back through the link "crumbs" that might tell me something of interest or value?

Google showing me a 404 link from an external source?
In my list of 404 errors from Google webmaster I have one with the "linked from" section showing an external link. This seems like a broken link (which obviously I will try and fix to get the link juice) but why would Google recognize it as a 404? From Google: | URL: | www.broken URL | | | Error details | In Sitemaps | Linked from | | <colgroup><col></colgroup>

Sub domain will not index - Next plan of action?
I'm not sure exactly what option i should take next. but i'll run you through a few points: The page is optimized to a rank "A" The page has 350 backlinks* a strong social presence Interlinking pages. High domain authority an OK page authority The domain ranks highly Every other sub domain rank highly. I make a search and the first page that ranks for this domain is a product page within the exact sub domain i'm trying to rank for, followed by some external blogs I've written and then the rest of the product pages. I've submitted the URL to web master tools twice and yet it still will not rank for that keyword. The only time i see the page index is if i copy the exact URL into Google. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Planning a Link Building Campaign: Which keywords to focus on?
Okay, so looking at my ranking tab for my campaign. It shows the increase in traffic from my keywords, ranks, etc. My goal is to increase traffic, thereby sales. I am trying to plan a link building campaign (aside from the onpage optimization) and get as many keywords within the top 10 as possible: Do I start focusing on a certain number of keywords that are on page 2 (lets say 10) and try to build links to get them within the top 10. Then pick another 10 keywords? Do I pick a variety of keywords from various pages? What is the smartest way of trying to optimize campaign keywords as far as linkbuilding?

Original Source and Canonical tags
We've been using canonical links to protect site SEO for contributor content and requiring canonical of our partners (as well as tagging internal duplicate content with canonical). Most other media sites have been doing the same but this is a moving target. I'm now hearing that the original source tag is now a better option. Special focus for us is placement on google news. Any guidance?
