To enter keyword meta tags or to not enter keyword meta tags?
-
I've been doing SEO for awhile, but new to SEOMoz. I'm surprised that SEOMoz does not recommend keyword meta tags.
I didn't enter them for the longest time because I know Google doesn't care about them. However, I did read that other search engines DO use them. And therefore that is why you should have them.
I teach my customers about SEO, and I know it would be much easier for them not to enter or worry about the keyword meta tags.
However, I would love to hear opinions here. And to Bing/Yahoo put any weight into them or is it only really small search engines?
Thanks!
Hilary

I love it when my competitors use the keyword tag! Not sure why you want to use it even if the smaller engines use it, as the downside must outway any benefits!

We like to keep this kind of thing private so that's a better option for sure. I think my 'always support the underdog' spirit wanted to find something, some use, some point to help support the lowly meta keywords tag but nope, it's time to drag that dog out into the dessert and put it out of it's misery.

To help with keyword management I would add a field to your CMS where you can add the keywords being targeted on a page by page basis but then keep this content unpublished so your competitors can't see a nice list of the keywords you are targeting.

this tag has been dead for a while. don't waste any time on keyword tags. if the tag is stuffed, includes words not in the page content or has intentionally misspelled keywords because you are trying to be clever, it can cause a drop in rankings.
welcome to SEOmoz, remember if someone takes the time to help you out and gives good advice, give them a thumbs up or mark it as a good answer!

Love all your answers! And good point about the code/read time. Geez, I wish I joined SEOMoz forever ago!
Time to celebrate no longer giving a hoot about keyword meta tags
-
Don't use them. The major search engines do not use them and by not using them, you have less code which will ultimately reduce server processing time (incrementally matters in volume).
-
Google and any other search engine do not give any importance to meta keywords tag.So it is better to leave this tag.
-
It's really a matter of preference. The strongest argument for using them is that other search engines use them. The strongest argument against it is the fact that your competitors can look at them and see exactly what terms you're trying to rank for.
I don't even think yahoo or Bing take them into account anymore. I don't even know which engines do use them. i guess I'd say it's better not to use them.

From a pure SEO perspective, then ditch them, they are probably not worth the effort. That said, if you have multiple people working on a site and the keywords meta tag just shows the keywords you have optimised the page for then it won't hurt anything.
So, okay from a management perspective but if this is a time sink, then drop it like a bad habit!

Title Tags & Meta descriptions do not update
Hi, I have a question about the title tags and meta descriptions of my domain b-buildingbusiness.com. I've updated them about 5 days ago but the new versions don't show in the search engines. However it does show when you check with the facebook developers tool https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/sharing/?q=http%3A%2F%2Fb-buildingbusiness.com%2F . Does anyone have an idea why they're not updated in the search engines and how I can resolve this? Best, Rik

Front page, keyword strategi?
Hi, Should the front page target a mixture of the most important keywords for the whole site (on page optimization)
On-Page Optimization | | Agguk
Or should we choose 1 or a few that are extra important/natural and optimize for this?
Each important keyword already has it´s own dedicated page (single keyword optimized)
...so either way the front page would "compete" against another internal page on a specific keyword, but maybe that´s the wrong way of looking at this?
Almost all external backlinks are pointing to the front page so I guess that´s the real strength of the front page but it does not provide in depth good value for a specific keyword. Thanks!/Anders0 -
Call to Actions in Meta Descriptions
Does it help your SEO if you have “Get it only at _______”. I know call to actions in general help when you search organically. Does it help to have your brand name/business name in the meta description?

Keywords to optimize
In the menu there's an item with a submenu with 4 items (pages) and another item with a submenu with almost the same pages with a litle bit different content. The problem is that one keyword can be applied and must be applied to the similar pages (the topic is very similar). I guess the number of keywords that we optimize is also important too. Optimizing minimun 8 keywords seems to me very hard. I' was told to optimize for a very low number of keywords but then we have the problem of redundancy. What should I do? Thanks!

Mentioning own site and keywords on here?
I have noticed that sometimes posters will talk about a site without mentioning what it is. I assume this is because it one of their clients so there is confidentiality, is there any other reason I should be aware of? its just that as I am new I am usually cautious and am considering posting my own site and mentioning all my keywords to ask for people’s verdict for my on-page SEO. Still working on it, will be ready soon, thought I would ask in advance. Regards,

Do alt tags count towards on page keyword density?
Hello...I have written a bunch of content for my site using a useful tool called Scribe SEO which recommends keyword density at 5% if I remember correctly. So all my my newly written content is below this level but I am left wondering if by adding alt tags with my chosen keywords I will be considered to be over the limit and cause a red flag? Can anyone clarify this for me please?

Missing meta descriptions on indexed pages, portfolio, tags, author and archive pages. I am using SEO all in one, any advice?
I am having a few problems that I can't seem to work out.....I am fairly new to this and can't seem to work out the following: Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂 1. I am missing alot of meta description tags. I have installed "All in One SEO" but there seems to be no options to add meta descriptions in portfolio posts. I have also written meta descriptions for 'tags' and whilst I can see them in WP they don't seem to be activated. 2. The blog has pages indexed by WP- called Part 2 (/page/2), Part 3 (/page/3) etc. How do I solve this issue of meta descriptions and indexed pages? 3. There is also a page for myself, the author, that has multiple indexes for all the blog posts I have written, and I can't edit these archives to add meta descriptions. This also applies to the month archives for the blog. 4. Also, SEOmoz tells me that I have too many links on my blog page (also indexed) and their consequent tags. This also applies to the author pages (myself ). How do I fix this? Thanks for your help 🙂 Regards Nadia

Meta refresh - nojavascript url
seomox is telling me that I am getting a page that is not being indexed or crawled and since the crawl status code is 200 and there are no robots the meta-refresh url must be the problem. the meta refresh url is different than the on page report card url as it's the nojavascript url which my developer says should be ok. see his comments below. The is redirecting to http://mastermindtoys.com/store/nojavascript.html only in case if the JavaScript is disabled in the client browser. This is the right way to do it, I don’t understand why this might be a problem, otherwise MM has to implement Noscript pages that have a real content. I didn’t get what’s wrong about accessibility. The code 200 means it is accessible, and yes there is nothing to access if JavaScript is disabled on browser. I think there are no modern retail sites that would do any sensible business with the scripting disabled in browsers. The H1 is really present 2 times and second occurrence can be removed, though I highly doubt about importance of this change.Regarding duplicates – what URLs are considered duplicates? Can you please send me examples?I am not aware of canonical URL problem for MM site unless we consider old .asp links as duplicate links of the canonical product pages. I would appreciate if SEOMoz gave us an example what they mean.I suspect that the page is not getting indexed as a result of this or I'm just not getting a good score. Which is it?
