Two links with the same quality but different effect
-
Hi,
the website I'm working for is loosing rankings for one specific keyword and since there haven't been any bigger onsite changes I assume it's the back links.
The company bought some exact anchor text links in the past, so I went through those. One specific one attracted my attention: It's a site wide link which creates over 80% of the back link profile to the specific website.
There was only one catch: part of this bought anchor text campaign is another highly targeted anchor text which is not negatively affected by the rankings.
Still I didn't like the feel of this so I ran the seomoz keyword difficulty report. And there I discovered an interesting pattern:
For keyword A we are the only ones in the top10 with such a high percentage of exact keyword usage. But for keyword B, which didn't loose rankings our top10 competitor have an even more over-optimized keyword usage or much weaker back link profile.
So now I wonder if it could actually be the case, that we loose rankings for keyword A since our competitors have a more natural profile, but for Keyword B it has no negative effect due to the worse competition.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Your conclusion sounds correct. Keyword A is much more competitive and you have 80% of your backlinks coming from one domain. Your competitors may have a stronger link profile with links from multiple domains and diverse anchor text.
You are able to rank for Keyword B since it is less competitive and you have a link with exact anchor text matching that term.

What factors are effecting our rank?
Can anyone shed some light on why this might be? Our website has a higher DA and PA yet the competition rank higher for some keywords. Even though our on page grader is higher or marginally different. **Our Website ** DA - 13 PA - 20 Keywords - 390 Linking Domains - 24 Total Inbound - 37 Follow - 14 Competitor DA - 8 PA - 15 Keywords - 640 Linking Domains - 12 Total Inbound - 79 Follow - 65

Should I get a link from a low quality directory?
While doing some backlink research of similar ranking sites I noticed that a few of them had links from a directory called Infignos, it has a moz DA of 37 and a low spam score of 3, so it doesn't look like complete junk. But the posts on it look terrible, like people are just putting keywords with a small description to get rankings. Should I bother posting something similar to be competitive or just move on? Any advice or feedback on this is much appreciated, I know some of these things are not quality sites but I was wondering the best way to filter that out. Thanks in advance.

Difference between Searches and Impressions
I've been using the Bing Ad Intelligence tool (which is great!), but I'm confused about one of the metrics and even the Microsoft customer support guy wasn't too clear. I search on "wills and trusts" and I get results that say there are 2,347 searches, and 7,228 impressions. How can there be more (ad) impressions than there were searches? If it was 5 searches and 1 impression, I'd assume that meant an ad didn't appear for all the searches. Makes sense. But 1 search and 2 impressions ... how does that happen? Appreciate any help, probably a dumb question but has me puzzled. Also, I hope non-Moz tool questions are appropriate. Thanks!

Problems With Link Detective
Is anyone else experiencing problems with Link Detective? It seems to of been down for a few days now with the same message that it will be back 'later today'. I have not seen any issues noted elsewhere but I know a fair few members here are using it so before I start pestering them I wondered if anyone else is having issues. Thanks

Best Link Analysis Tool?
Now that the Yahoo Site Explorer is not usable on sites unless they are in your Bing Webmaster Tools, what is the best tool out there to see an accurate list of inbound links to a site? Google tools are still pretty unreliable from what I can see...

Online checkers for Anchor Links ?
Okay, we are looking for online tools to check our backlinks, and anchor links top domains, etc. OSE is not working for us, because looks like , it gets updated in some months. We are looking for something, which can drag the statistics in fw hours and show up. Let me know.

Are My Links Valuable?
I have been link building for a couple months now. I am having a hard time trying to figure out which sites are even worthy of getting links from. Obviously, those that are clearly link farming, or have lots of ads throughout their site are not valuable. I use OSE, but don't know what is a good P.A or D.A. and what it means when one is much higher than the other (and if that is a bad thing). I also use compete.com to give me a general idea of the unique visitors going into a site. Any tools I can use to help evaluate the strength of specific incoming links/ specific websites? Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks So Much, Melissa
