Difference between Searches and Impressions
-
I've been using the Bing Ad Intelligence tool (which is great!), but I'm confused about one of the metrics and even the Microsoft customer support guy wasn't too clear.
I search on "wills and trusts" and I get results that say there are 2,347 searches, and 7,228 impressions. How can there be more (ad) impressions than there were searches? If it was 5 searches and 1 impression, I'd assume that meant an ad didn't appear for all the searches. Makes sense. But 1 search and 2 impressions ... how does that happen?
Appreciate any help, probably a dumb question but has me puzzled. Also, I hope non-Moz tool questions are appropriate.
Thanks!

I think it has something to do with keyword match types (it's the same thing as with google adwords) - http://advertise.bingads.microsoft.com/en-us/help-topic/how-to/50822/what-are-keyword-match-types-and-how-do-i-use-them

I don't do a ton of Bing ad work so this may be incorrect but the way I understand it is that you're selling the total number of ads that appeared (impressions.)
So if one search for wills returns 4 ads on the side, that's 1 search, 4 impressions.
Yours shows about 1 search per 3.1 impressions. That sounds like my understanding of this would be correct but again, this is my understanding. I'm not 100% sure.

Why such a difference in external followed links details?
I love using seomoz and have done for a few years. I am no SEO expert, but like to think I can get away with making out I know what I'm on about! I use opensiteexplorer regualrly and usually enjoy delving deeper into it's metrics, but one thing is bothering me (before I start with this, please forgive me if I am missing something obvious - you may have to point it out in your answer!) So I run a comparison of a few sites and pay attention to the external followed links section. On checking this number at root domain level, company A has 12,666 external followed links. So I want to dig a little deeper as to the qulaity of those links and click along to the inbound links tab, here I select the following: "followed & 301" > "only external" > "all links to this root domain" > leaving the results ungrouped Downloading this table I only have results for 3,416 links - why such a big difference to the previous 12,666 or am I missing something here? Would just like a bit of clarification 🙂

Why do keyword competition rankings differ between Google and SeoMoz?
I am a novice at keyword ranking etc. so I appreciate your patience! I checked a longtail keyword - how do i get out of this relationship - in Google AdWords and it came back 'low competition.' When I entered it in SeoMoz it came back as 'very competitive.' Any thoughts? I appreciate your help.

What is the difference between "external backlinks" & "referring domains" on Majestic SEO?
According to Majestic SEO's glossary, a "Referring domain, also known as "ref domain", is a domain from which a backlink is pointing to a page or link." Given this definition, I'm not sure what an external backlink is?

1 domain dominating unbranded search terms?
Anyone have any insight or comments? We’ve been negatively impacted by the last Google algorithm update - not by a penalization of our site but because another site is now grabbing the top 3-4 search results for long tail physician name searches thereby pushing us lower in the rankings. Being that we’ve never seen this happen with unbranded search terms, we’re not sure how to address it. To see an example, click http://www.google.com/search?q=dr.+elizabeth+eads. You’ll notice that the top 4 results are all from 1 site - HealthGrades - with 2-3 of the 4 pages being canned, pre-written templates without any unique content (see malpractice & sanction pages). It seems that they are doing this by paginating their information into separate pages, thus appearing in multiple search results, instead of putting all the information on 1 page, as we do and Google’s best practices suggest. Any advice or comments would really be appreciated.
