Is there really a magic software that helps you do SEO as opposed to manage it?
-
E.g. create credible links to your site without to much manual labour?

Hi Kara,
Welcome to SEOmoz! Thanks for coming here to ask that question. It might help if you think of it the other way around -- are there credible sites that would allow a magic software to create links from them?
You might want to read the chapter on building links in our Beginner's Guide to SEO at http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links. It will give you a good introduction to quality link building.

The only 'magic' you'll see from automated link building software is the vanishing act of your site from Google's index

I really like Ryan's reply. My only difference is that I would replace the word "tools" with "knowledge".
IMO, the more "tools" you use the more your performance will trend towards "average". When there are only ten positions on the first page of Google with a million competing, "average" is failure. You win by doing "better than the tools".
-
Definitely not. If you are even asking that question, it indicates you are likely new to SEO and are likely vulnerable to a variety of SEO scams.
SEO results are achieved through time being spent by knowledgeable, experienced people who are using the right tools to get the job done.

Backllinks to our site but via redirect (still SEO helpful?)
Hi, A large website may link to us but via their internal redirect mechanism. So it would be somthing like this: [If you select the link, it eventually goes to our site but not from the original page. These links would be placed on lots of pages, but since they would all "pass through" the "redirect" page, it seems not as beneficial from an SEO perspective. Is this reasoning correct? Would google still follow the link and see where it ends up, even though it is via multiple pages? Ideally I'd prefer direct link but how much better is it than the redirect as listed above?](/redirect/rd?site=www.oursite.com/page&trackingparam=111111)

Help me understand the gap between DMOZ and the Google Directory?
I have seen other sites showing up in OSE with backlinks from both DMOZ and Google Directory. We are in DMOZ, and our backling is showing for that in OSE, but i don't understand how to get added to the Google directory? When i go to the appropriate category, and click "submit link" it just takes me back to DMOZ! Is there something i'm doing wrong here? This is the page we are on in DMOZ And this is the page i believe we should be on in the google directory As a side note, i would love to hear your opinions if this really even matters? does google really use it's own directory as part of its search algorithm?
