SEO for One Page Websites
-
Hi
Are there any SEO guidelines for "one page websites". I'm looking into the 'benefit' it might have in combination with exact match URLs.
Many thanks in advance.
-
Yes, if a service is no longer active, we would 301 it to the landing page on the main domain.
-
I guess you would 301 if the offer doesn't exist/apply anymore and canonicalise if the page could have a long-term practical use even after the promotion expires. Right?
-
In essence we want to go after 1 main keyword phrase on that one-page, and we'll mention that in the metas. But your suggestion of adding more text to widen the keyword cloud is great.
-
Suppose that's not wholly unreasonable. Just make sure to have some good links (that are natural and non-spammy-looking) pointing back to the main domain.

I ran out of Good Answers clicks
I agree with you Rand. The SEO in me wants to extend to a few additional (keyword focused) pages as well. It is indeed a shame to waste good authority. Even though the website owner has a good (broad) authority website, he really wants to widen his net by adding these one page exact domain match website... and I just want to be super-prepared
-
Thanks for the link Darren - My site search on SEOmoz wasn't as successful
-
When it comes to single page sites, make sure you're matching strategy appropriately. It's very hard to win the long tail, and there's often a lot of domain authority value (if the site/page earns lots of links) that goes unspent, meaning you could have more pages/content that could rank well if you added them to the site.
I like to think of these one-pagers as being great promotional vehicles that can later be wrapped into a larger marketing/brand effort by rel-canonicaling or 301'ing back to a reproduction of the content on your larger site. Maybe it's just the thrifty SEO in me, but I hate to see that domain authority wasted

I second the dont be scared of document size recommendation BUT you need to understand the audience you're trying to access and what you want them to do - you havent given us anything to go on really
If people are already pre-bought in and you just want to capture email addresses, then you just need somethign simple and use conversion optimisation to maximise capture
If its early in the buying cycle and you are trying to educate customers, then go to town - add maps, video, images etc as appropritae and make sure to tag them well.
I have also started to write my content with the SEOmoz LDA tool - its pretty fantastic for making sure you don't miss anything important out and end up with a rich, informative page
-
My advice is not to be scared of document size. Have as much data in there as needed to inform and provide regular call to action throughout. Good semantic structure will help Google understand what you're really about. Don't stuff your TITLE with many things - I am guessing you're about a single product or service. Often people try to put too much in key areas, forgetting that Google will pick up miscellaneous other terms from the page and have it rank for it as well.
-
Well the guide is still very good. However, one might add some sharing buttons for Twitter/Facebook, as these seem to be important rankingfactors nowadays.

Building a new page: What on-page SEO would you build in?
Hi all, Building a new page for a fairly competitive keyword. Need to make sure the on-page SEO is pretty top notch, because link building (including internal links) will be difficult. I've optimised the meta description, the alt tags and image names, and included the keyword in the Title Tags. Not a great deal I can do with regards to optimising for mobile or considering migrating to the AMP project because this is handled externally. What else would you suggest? Cheers in advance, Rhys

Dividing a website into two websites
I have a website which talks about Yoga and GMAT classes (2,000 pages). It has blog posts, Faqs, discussions, videos etc.I am planning to fork GMAT content (1,000) pages into a niche website to rank better. Is this a good idea or bad idea? Will Google think niche new Yoga site as duplicate content was there on Dance site in the beginning. I am doing this with assumption that niche website will have higher authority so that I can beat the competitors. What is the best approach to beat your competitors? I am primarily concerned of what happens if I fork half of the website into a new one. Will Google treat new website as a duplicate content website because, this content WAS present in old website and Google will have archives of that. Please help

Best way to move traffic/juice from one page to another?
I’ve got some pages that provide information on some companies in my website topic space, and also corresponding pages that allow users to rate and review those companies. So, for example: Company A information Company A reviews Company B information Company B reviews Google searches for “Company A” or “Company B” generally result in my information page ranking #2 behind the actual company’s website, and the reviews page ranking #3. (Probably not good to have two pages ranking for the same keyword in positions 2 and 3). The information pages do very well in Adsense while the review pages do not. The review pages have always had comments open for reviews, and I’ve just recently opened the information pages to comments. This has resulted in less of a need for the reviews pages as the comments on the Information pages are now serving the same purpose. I can even add a star rating to the information pages if I want so the review pages are completely unnecessary. So, I’d rather strengthen my information pages 1) to more solidify their rankings, and 2) get more visitors there than the review pages as they convert way better in Adsense. Question is, what is the best way to proceed? Option 1: remove internal linking to the review pages (I have sidebar links too), so less link juice just naturally goes to the review pages. On the review pages, direct people to click the link to the information page to go there instead. Eventually, the review pages will fall off the front page of the SERPs and people will just go to my #2 ranked company information page instead (and maybe #1 if I’m lucky, but doubt I’ll get ahead of the brand). Option 2: 301 Redirect the review pages to the information pages. Functionally, this would work well for me, but I fear that Google may not like it for some reason. My information pages are ranked so well that I do not want to risk them dropping. Are these fears unfounded? Is either of these two options better than the other, or does anyone have a better idea? Whatever I do, I don’t want those company information pages dropping from their #2 positions.

Static pages with dynamic content: Good for SEO?
I wanted to know ones thoughts on reducing duplication by creating a static page with a few dynamic fields. Has anyone done this? If 75% of a page is static and 25% is dynamic, is that a good ratio? It's an idea I am thinking about to combat duplication issues affecting ecommerce pages. Some ecommerce sites generate a new page for a small change like size, but the content is the same. What if you could create a single static page and depending on the size chosen, only those fields connected to the size are dynamic? Everything else remains the same. For caching purposes, you always submit a cached page with default values. Wouldn't this work? Isn't this a solution for duplicate ecommerce pages? It would also help in ranking, rather than multiple external links across duplicate ecommerce pages, it would just be to a single page.

Will ReDesigning my website negatively affect SEO?
I currently have a one page website which lists all the company information on one page [domain name is www. bwd . co . za]. It uses javascript for navigation. My challenge is that the layout is outdated and I would like to update it with a high quality WordPress theme which will not be a one-pager. Currently on Open Site Explorer the website has a domain authority of 30/100 and page authority of 41/100. I've worked hard to push the numbers to get to where they are hence I'm a bit concerned. Will re-designing my website negatively affect SEO?

Should I include a "|" for better page title SEO results?
I have seen many sites that include the "|" in page titles and was wondering if there is some SEO value in the practice. Example: Product Name | Company Name Instead of: Product Name by Company Name I have not seen any value in it myself other than a good way to avoid stop words. I wanted to make sure. Currently I have the "by" included in the page titles.
