The long tail
-
I've been focusing on the long tail for one of my websites. I've been getting good traffic that has been converting well for me. So far i've mostly been using wordtracker and google keyword tool to find long tail keywords. I did try hitail for a few months, but it gave me very few extra keywords.
Does anyone know of some other tools out there to find more long tail keywords?
Thanks

Hi Peter,
I like jonsantillan's list--Google trends is an especially sharp tool for uncovering blog post ideas in your niche. Find what's "hot" and be the first to write about it. If your content is good, it may become the source that everyone refers back to (i.e. major link bait).
Another tool that I've found really helpful for uncovering long-tail keywords is Market Samurai. It's a piece of software that runs on Adobe Air (any operating system). Beyond generating extra keywords, MS has a lot of filters that help you prioritize your keywords, even beyond what Wordtracker offers. It will also return the daily estimated CTR for owning the #1 organic rank!.
You can start with a free version, but even after the trial is over you can use the keyword research functions without restriction.

Hi PeterM22,
I think one of the best way to find long tail keywords is from adwords by setting up a campaign using "head keywords" in a broad match. Run it in a week or 2 and you'll see a list of possible long tail keywords in "Show all Keywords" section.
Other than that you can try the the following options/tools to find more long tail terms;
- Semrush -
- Keyword Discovery
- Google - Search base keyword tool
- Google Trends
- Google Related Search
- Google AutoComplete
- Bing Related Search
- Bing Search Suggestion
- Ask Related Search
By the way - (some of the tools that I mentioned above are paid which I have no affiliation whatsoever)

Does it make sense to pursue long-tail keywords with low search volume
Hi Moz community, I need your insight into what would ensure better rankings. Some of the pages that I am optimizing are dedicated to niche products targeting specific verticals and the main keywords have really low average search volume (below 50). I'll give you an example (these are not the exact keywords, just an example to illustrate my dilemma): if my long-tail keyword is "student information management software" with search volume of 20, when do I stand better chances to gain search visibility: by optimizing the page for this long-tail keyword and incorporating it in the title tag, or by pursuing more generic keywords with higher search volume: "student" and "information management software"? If I am targeting short-tail keywords, will the page also rank for long-tail searches that are a combination of these keywords? In other words, which scenario gives better chances to rank higher: 1) pursuing short-tail keywords with high search volume in the title-tag 2) pursuing fewer long-tail keywords with lower search volume that are a combination of those in scenario 1? Thanks in advance for your help!

How to use long tail keyword?
Hi I read in most of the SEO blogs that using longtail keywords can help us in our search rankings. But how can we actually get a traffic from longtail keyword if that particular longtail keyword is not having any search volume. For example, if I wanted to rank for the keyword "SEO" which has a huge search volume of 5,500 per month and if I wanted to concentrate on one of its longtail keyword "SEO basics for beginners" which has average search volume of only 40 per month, how can it help me?

How to estimate search volume for multiple long tail queries?
I am comparing Moz, WordTracker and Google keyword research tools and trying to figure out how I can compare the aggregated search volume for a page which targets several similar long-tail queries. For instance, according to one tool, the query 'printable guitar sheet music' has 125 monthly searches, but many small variations of this also have a similar amount. Do I just make a reasonable list and calculate them? Or do I just use "125" as an abstract number of measurement with no concrete reference to a **real **number of searchers, but useful in comparing one keyword to the next, and assume that all key words have a similar degree of consorting variations? I seem to remember Google used to give away some pretty damned useful information in the keyword search tool, including monthly search volume. But now it looks like the metric is not actual search volume, but a 1-100 score based on the search volume. So my questions are: Should I try to convert these numbers into real search figure estimates or just use them for comparing one to the next? Should I worry about trying to combine the aggregated variations of long tail keyword searches, or should I just choose one good keyword and let that represent all possible variations?
